Winterfest to play up guys versus gals in LR spirit competition

Lake Roosevelt students will be locked in battle next week as the boys try to outdo the girls in a fundraiser for ASB funds and school spirit.

The stakes are high, with sacrificial representatives of the losers subjected to the “Polar Plunge” at the end of the week. This has something to do with a kiddie pool, dry ice and bare feet for five minutes.

Perhaps even better is the positive incentive to stuff the guys and gals donation cans at the office with collected cash donations. Principal Brad Wilson has agreed to a temporary ear piercing if they collect more than $1,000. And for every extra $100, another male faculty member will fall to the temporary earlobe punch. If they reach $1,700, Raider football coach and middle school teacher James Caddy gets his.

“That seems to be a big incentive,” noted school Secretary Debbie VanGeystel.

It’s all part of “Winterfest,” the winter equivalent of spirit week in the fall. It will end with a dance Friday night, but during the week will feature dress-up days and door decorations.

Funds raised stock the ASB treasury, which pays for special assemblies, speakers and a rewards day trip to Spokane next semester for students who make the cut on four of six criteria.

If a student approaches you for a donation, he or she may just be trying to avoid frostbite, so give generously.
