For Father's Day eve: explosions in the sky

“Ooh! … Ah!”

Those words are the universal language for “look at the fireworks!”

This Saturday night at 9 p.m. the Northwest Pyrotechnics Association, of which local man Alan Cain is a member, will put on a fireworks show near North Dam on Banks Lake.

“It’s going to be a good half hour of pyrotechnic fun for a happy Fathers Day,” Cain said.

A good view of the show will be available from Banks Lake Park and North Dam Park, both near the dam, and Cain says the best views “are probably going to be by Coulee Playland.”

Another fun option is to go out on your boat, canoe, or kayak, and watch the pretty lights explode in the sky from the waters of Banks Lake.

Coulee Playland is offering free boat launching for the event, for those who want to see the spectacle from the waters of Banks Lake.

Dangerously high winds or other disruptive “acts of God” would cancel the event.

Safety workers in orange jackets and helmets will make sure people don’t get too close to the launch sites, and a safety boat will make sure that those watching from their boats don’t get too close either.

Cain brought the event together by getting the necessary permits from the powers that be: the city of Grand Coulee, the fire department, the Coulee Area Park and Recreation District, and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.
