  • 90 days in the wake of Hurricane Harvey

    Jacob Wagner|Apr 11, 2018

A woman stands on a chair holding her infant daughter over her head as the floodwaters rise in her home before rescuers find her. This is just one of the stories Electric City resident Lynda Anderson encountered during her 90-day deployment in the Houston, Texas area, where she did work for the Army Corps of Engineers, from which she had retired in 2012. Parts of Texas and Louisiana were hit by Hurricane Harvey on Aug. 25, 2017, and soon thereafter Anderson was contacted about going there to...

  • Old gun laws not working

    Robert Piekarski|Apr 11, 2018

In 1965 I got a job in California. Five months later, some new friends asked this Idaho country boy to go hunting with them in the Sierras on one guy’s family ranch, where I had to show three of them how to load their rifles. There were some very close calls. The same gun laws that kept people safe in Idaho didn’t even come close in California. I somehow survived, and this was among friends. Forty years later I strapped on a pistol for a walk in the woods. A visiting granddaughter started yelling “Gun! Gun! Gun!” What a wake-up call! Even in...

    Jacob Wagner|Apr 11, 2018

Lake Roosevelt students competed at the Future Business Leaders of America state competition in Bellevue over the weekend, where Alan Nordine took fourth place in the Help Desk category. Nordine will compete at the national competition in Baltimore, Maryland, at the end of June. "[Nordine] had to wait in a holding room for about 20 minutes," said Susan Duclos, advisor to the FBLA club at Lake Roosevelt. "Once his name was called, he went back into the testing prep room where he was given his...

  • Lady Raiders beat Nannies

    Jacob Wagner|Apr 11, 2018

The Lady Raiders won their first game back from spring break on the road against the Pateros Nannies. In Pateros on April 9, the LR Ladies emerged the victor, 16-6. “Gloria [Michel] pitched well,” Head Coach Alissa Mansker said. “The strike zone given to her was not forgiving; she threw strikes all night that were being called as outside the zone, and there isn’t much you can do there except hope the opposing team swings. “Finally the other team caught on and began getting some contact, allowing for our defense to make plays. Our outfield playe...

  • Raiders mauled by Bears

    Jacob Wagner|Apr 11, 2018

The Raiders lost both games of a doubleheader last week, the only games played during a spring-break lull. In Brewster on April 5, the Raiders lost both games of a doubleheader, with final scores of 16-0 and 15-0. The Raiders played yesterday in Pateros against the Billygoats, and they play the Billygoats at home in Coulee Dam on April 17 at 4:30 p.m. “Brewster has a strong program,” said Head Coach Billy Nicholson. “We made too many mistakes on defense to compete.” The Raider highlight of the games came from Hunter Whitelaw, who hit a double...

    Jacob Wagner|Apr 4, 2018

Local rodeo legend Shane Proctor is teaching his annual bull riding school at the Nespelem rodeo arena yesterday and today, April 3-4, imparting some wisdom to up-and-coming cowboys and cowgirls. "We're teaching them a lot about the basics," Proctor said. "We're teaching them about being square on the back of a bull, keeping your free arm close to you, getting up over the front of them as the bull comes up, and getting off your butt. Just really concentrating on the basics." Proctor was joined...

  • Softball wins two, loses one

    Jacob Wagner|Apr 4, 2018

In Oroville March 27, the Lady Raiders won 22-13. “Both teams fought all throughout in this game,” said Lady Raider Head Coach Alissa Mansker. “It was a fun game where we defensively had to play strong and keep their heads up on errors,” Mansker said. “Kyona Edmo had an amazing double play, catching a line drive at shortstop and throwing to first to beat the runner back. Cassidy Reyes did an excellent job defending in the infie...

  • Tennis girls upset A-school Omak

    Jacob Wagner|Apr 4, 2018

Last week in Raider tennis, the boys' team lost and girls' team won against Omak opponents, and the Raiders won aplenty in their individual matchups against Davenport/Harrington. Competing on the Raider home courts against Omak March 27, the Raider girls' team won 3-2. "This was an excellent outing against an A school," said Head Coach Steve Archer. "Our girls really shined. It's something special when a 2-B school like ours, with only four girls, can pull off a win against an A school like...

  • Raider golfers consume a three-course week

    Jacob Wagner|Apr 4, 2018

The Lake Roosevelt golf team had a busy week, playing on a windy day at Banks Lake Golf Course, then playing in better weather at Sage Hills Golf Course in Warden, followed by the Okanogan Valley course in Omak. The Raiders were joined at home by golfers from Warden and Oroville March 26 to play nine holes. The LR team finished with a score of 204, ahead of Warden's 229. Oroville did not have a team score. "The wind was a huge factor, definitely," said Head Coach Steve Files. "Steady 18 mph....

  • Raiders win one before losing both of doubleheader

    Jacob Wagner|Apr 4, 2018

The Raider baseball team notched a solid win in Oroville against the Hornets, but lost both games of a doubleheader in Liberty Bell against the Mountain Lions last week. The Raiders won 17-1 against the Hornets March 27 in Oroville. “We made easy plays behind our pitchers,” Head Coach Billy Nicholson said. “Our offense was able to string together hits in multiple innings.” Things didn’t fare so well for the Raiders at Liberty Bell March 31, where the Raiders lost the first game 13-0, and the second game 4-1. “We couldn't get our offense goi...

  • Levy proposed to restore school funding

    Jacob Wagner|Mar 28, 2018

Local area voters may be faced with deciding on approval of a school levy that would restore $480,000 of property taxes per year to the school district for the next four years, but not raise taxes higher than they were last year. The Grand Coulee Dam School District board voted Monday night to put the resolution for a “capital levy” on the agenda for discussion at next month’s board meeting April 23. Local area voters would approve or deny the proposed levy in the upcoming August 7 election. In 2017, the state Legislature passed Engro...

  • School District to bring back alternative program next year

    Jacob Wagner|Mar 28, 2018

A program to educate students who “don’t fit” the regular high school or who are at risk of not graduating high school will come back to the Grand Coulee Dam School District next year. The school board voted Monday to bring back the alternative learning environment (ALE) to the district. The ALE was removed from the district last year as a way to cut costs. The school board had removed the ALE in the current year’s budget, anticipating that students in that program would return to “regular” school, thus keeping money in the district, i...

Zinke visited the Colville Tribes Government Center on Mar. 22, speaking with the Colville Business Council in a private meeting. A March 23 press r...

  • From the Alamo to the Snake River

    Don C. Brunell|Mar 28, 2018

Most of the 2.5 million annual Alamo visitors focus on the epic 1836 battle in which a small band of brave Texans was eventually overrun by the Mexican army. Folk heroes like Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie and William Travis were among the Texans killed while fighting for independence from Mexico. However, the Alamo is more than a small Spanish-style church, depicted on tourism brochures, which barely withstood a 13-day pummeling from Mexican cannons. It is a large complex built nearly a century before the siege where irrigated agriculture was...

  • Tennis teams win and lose

    Jacob Wagner|Mar 28, 2018

The Raider tennis squad competed in Oroville on March 20. The girls’ team won 4-0, all singles matches won by Raiders Alexia Ryan, Tarissa Clark, Shay Schilling, and Raven Clark. The boys’ team lost 3-2. Despite Raider Bradley Wilder winning the third singles game, the game was counted as a forfeit because it was Wilder’s second match, meaning there weren’t enough players who qualified to compete. Aiden Derr won his singles match, Malcolm Carson lost his. Wilder and Morgan George won their doubles match, and Terry Yazzie and Tucker Keeley...

The Lake Roosevelt Raider track & field team competed at the Ray Cross Invitational in Ephrata on Saturday. “It was a day of Personal Records,” said Head Coach Lori Adkins. “The athletes continued to better their times and distances, setting PR’s or SR’s (season records) in nearly every entry we had.” In the javelin event, Addison Hansen placed first and set a personal record with a distance of 104 feet, 10 inches. Keianna Vera placed third in the same event with a distance of 91 feet, one inch. Steven Flowers placed first in the shot put ev...

    Jacob Wagner|Mar 28, 2018

The Lady Raiders started their softball season with a string of solid wins, defeating Oroville before winning both games of a doubleheader with Bridgeport. Against the Lady Hornets of Oroville on March 20, the Lady Raiders played to a large home crowd and didn't disappoint the fans, winning 20-3. "Our defense needs to get better behind our pitchers," Head Coach Billy Nicholson noted. "Our offense...

  • Short- term rentals off the table in Electric City

    Jacob Wagner|Mar 21, 2018

People who own houses in Electric City and who don’t live in those houses will not be able to rent them for any timeframe shorter than a month, following a city council vote last week. In contrast to short-term rentals, when the owner of a home occupies it, they are allowed to charge people to stay for short terms as a “bed and breakfast.” The Electric City Council voted 3-1 March 13 not to continue with the idea of including such “short-term rentals” in the city’s comprehensive plan. Prior to the vote, two couples spoke against the idea. Mark...

  • Volunteers save horse from icy pond

    Jacob Wagner|Mar 21, 2018

Eight local volunteers, in the middle of the night, helped save a horse that had fallen through the ice in a Douglas County pond recently. Ron and Virginia Keller live outside of the Crown Point area on Pendell Road. After coming home from dining out March 10, they realized they didn’t know where their two horses were, thinking it unusual the horses weren’t waiting for their late-night snack of apples and carrots. Ron searched his property far and wide, wearing a headlamp and carrying a flashlight, eventually hearing a faint whinnying noise. Th...

  • We need to take part if we want improvements

    Birdie Hensley|Mar 21, 2018

Want a bus so you can get to the store or doctor? Want a bus in town to take you to the senior center? Want bus service to drive you home from a community event? Raise your hand! If any of this is true, why did we have a Grand Coulee Mobility Summit March 15 at the Grand Coulee Dam Senior Center, and out of 20-plus organization that were invited ONLY three attended? It does not help just to sit with your friend at coffee or at the bar and complain about things we do not have in town. Only one city had a representative, no representative from...

  • Sick of liberal editorial cartoons

    Becky and Doug Patrick|Mar 21, 2018

We have subscribed to The Star newspaper for almost 40 years, but we have never seen such partisan writings ever before. We are sick of the progressive bias that you show and, in particular, the Trump bashing from the Editorial cartoon. (I use that term loosely ... because it is far from funny!) President Trump is the only person strong enough to try to fight off socialism against all odds and the uphill battle to rid our government of the serious corruption. I hope in the future, for our country’s sake, you will take a good, hard look at y...
