The Raider tennis team last week squared off well against Mountain Lions, Bulldogs, and Tigers, including Alexia Ryan's two-and-a-half-hour singles match win. In Liberty Bell on April 24, the Raider boys tied 2-2, and the girls won 3-1 against the Mountain Lions. The Raider baseball team spent a lot of time on the road this past week, going to Waterville and Okanogan where they lost, and to Soap Lake, where they won both games of a doubleheader. The Raider golf team played on the course in Oroville on April 25. “Perfect weather and the course was in excellent condition,” remarked Head Coach Steve Files. “Some of the fastest greens we’ve played so far this year; Oroville is a tight, challenging layout with plenty of elevation changes. The Grand Coulee Dam School District announced some staffing changes at their last school board meeting. The vice principal at the high school, Charlie Pierce, will be a full-time administrator again, and will no longer teach a construction class. The safety officer position is going to be eliminated, and the vice principal, along with a paraprofessional, will be taking on those monitoring duties. Local area voters will be faced with deciding on approval of a school levy that would restore six figures of property taxes per year to the school district for the next four years, but not raise tax rates higher than they were in 2017, putting them back to 81 cents lower than they are for 2018. Grant County Public Utility District has been installing new “advanced” meters in homes and businesses, a move the utility says will save $35.6 million by 2029. After winning a tough tennis match on Friday, Lake Roosevelt student Rylee Pitner, to her delight, checked her email to see she had been selected for a Gates Scholarship. The scholarship, given by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is given out to 300 students each year, nationwide, and will provide funding for Pitner's next five years of college. The Electric City Council will be taking a retreat to Ephrata next week to see some presentations related to managing a city, and to discuss ideas in a different environment. The council booked the Nat Washington House in Ephrata for $150 dollars for the day’s presentations April 28. Electric City Council is considering de-annexing lands in the Osborne Bay area that were added to the city in 2009, and there’s a lot to consider. Letting go of expanded city limits from that annexation would require a supermajority, or 60 percent of city voters. Part of the reasoning for de-annexing the land has to do with hunting regulation.
