  • More than DAYcare needed

    Carol Schoning|Jan 18, 2023

I know the subject of childcare has been brought up before, and we do have a daycare center and several in home sitters available. They all seem busy showing the need is there. I believe that there is an area of great need not being met, and that is evening and weekend care. Think about how many area businesses pay minimum wage, part-time, with a lot of nights and weekends. The need is there, BUT will anyone fill it? Carol Schoning...

  • Re: "One nation, indivisible" 6-22-22

    Carol Schoning|Jun 29, 2022

2 There are several very important words of the pledge of allegiance: I pledge ALLEGIANCE (loyalty or commitment) to the flag of the UNITED (joined together politically for a common purpose) States of America and to the REPUBLIC (a Government where the supreme power is held by the people and their elected officials and president, not a monarch) for which it stands, one nation under GOD, INDIVISIBLE (impossible to be divided) with LIBERTY (being free, within a society, of oppressive restrictions) and JUSTICE (fairness and rightness in the treatm...

  • Re: "Why progress is hard for this community" editorial Dec. 8

    Bob Valen and Carol Schoning|Dec 15, 2021

In a space of 7 miles Here’s a further perspective. Four communities, or neighborhoods, that have a combined population of 3,378 (current Census), a distance of 7 miles or 15 minutes from the southernmost to the northernmost town. Today, as Scott states, 20 council members and 4 mayors for a population of less than 3,400 people. Each town competes with the others, duplicating efforts for such things as grant dollars for various and important community needs and improvements. Fire protection, ambulance and police needs are contracts or a...

  • Won't be sending granddaughter to school

    Carol Schoning|Dec 9, 2020

I think that opening our school district to face-to-face learning is one of the biggest mistakes we could have made to start with. We start out allowing 25 per 100,000, then 75 and now 200. Who are they trying to kid? What is this actually doing aside from adding more risk to all of our lives. How many weeks — well, more like days — has it been since our state governor was begging people not to gather for Thanksgiving, so what has changed from then till now? My understanding is that cases are increasing not dropping, so the district is now wil...

  • Re: "Risky time to take risks" editorial, Nov. 11 issue

    Carol Schoning|Nov 18, 2020

Just a comment on Scott Hunter’s thoughts on starting in-person learning again: In my 70s and raising a now teenager who says I am an (old fashioned, crazy, crabby old lady), I often wonder if she is right. I have answered the questionnaires, polls and spoken to school administration a few times. I keep up with the Covid stats for WA, and so far I am for keeping distance learning for, who knows how much longer. Thank you, Scott, for your like opinion. I just heard tonight (Nov. 15) that Gov. Inslee is on the brink of closing the state down a...

  • Some factors to consider

    Carol Schoning|Aug 1, 2018

I keep thinking it has to be full-moon time from the actions of people around me, but no, it wasn’t that. Then I read your article on the number of suicides — seven in a week (“Many take their own lives in last two weeks,” 7/25/18). Living in a depressed area where jobs are scarce and many minimum wage jobs are not full-time, people cannot afford rent, many are homeless or living with other people, which causes extra stress for all. Hot weather, we know, can cause anger and other issues. It is probable that all of these factors play a part; h...

  • Another idea for the middle school

    Carol Schoning|Aug 27, 2014

There is a letter to the editor this week suggesting the old middle school become Grand Coulee’s new city hall. What a waste of space that would be. It seems that this is the perfect opportunity for a community center, which could include most any kind of activity. The gym, ball fields, rooms for different groups to be able to stay set up for their purposes, possible daycare center, kitchen with room for banquets, fundraisers, etc., a stage with dressing rooms close on either side for the Planet Earth Players, talent shows and so much more. W... Full story

  • Disappointed in new laser show

    Carol Schoning|May 28, 2014

If Saturday night was the entire new light show (as it didn’t start until about 10:30 instead of 10 and was over by 11), I am truly disappointed. I had heard it was much longer than the old one. The story is fantastic! The pictures and wording are almost all black and white, just a few small spots of color. The wording is waytoo big to watch up close, in places like the VAC and the lower park, it is blurred. It could probably be better read from Crown Point or at least the area across from the motel and casino. There are largeanimals and o... Full story

  • Public outcry needed to save hospital

    Carol Schoning|Mar 5, 2014

Public outcry needed to save hospital We need our doctors, the ones we know and trust. If they leave, I believe that CMC may as well close their doors. If Mr. Graham leaves real soon it might have a chance. Who is he, anyway; I have never seen him. He is obviously not a people person as some past administrators, who were community connected. Why, in this size facility, would Mr. Graham need someone to speak for him? Is that an actual position? What can we do? Is there a way to legally petition for his resignation? We need a huge public outcry,... Full story

  • Jan Erickson for volunteer of the year

    Carol Schoning|Dec 23, 2013

I would like to nominate Jan (Bonamici) Erickson for volunteer of the year. I realize that because she is a teacher many see what she does as part of her job, but it goes far beyond that. I have known Jan since 1985, as a volunteer in her classroom, then co-worker for many years. I know she is a totally dedicated teacher, but she also spends untold amounts of her own money on extra materials, prizes etc. each and every year to make learning more interesting, meaningful and fun. She buys foods and many other things that fit into the curriculum... Full story

  • Re: "Voters to choose from three mayoral candidates"

    Carol Schoning|Jul 24, 2013

I think Greg Wilder would make a great new major. Quincy has done a good job for many years. Coulee Dam needs someone more in tune with younger families and their priorities now. The city council could probably use a burst of new energy, as well. Greg is well educated, has a wide range of experience, is very articulate, personable, enthusiastic and well liked in the community. With a fresh outlook on old and new issues concerning Coulee Dam, I don’t think we could ask for a better candidate! Carol Schoning... Full story

  • Re: "City: no daycare on Main Street" 4/10/13

    Carol Schoning|Apr 17, 2013

Have none of these council members ever looked for daycare in this area? Impossible! So most children are cared for by unlicensed caregivers in their homes or relatives who don’t always WANT to do it. I would think in the interest of community needs, it would be a small issue to change the codes. While I’m writing, we also have nothing for people working evenings or weekends; there is a desperate need for that. Carol Schoning... Full story

  • Record breaking Halloween on Camas St.

    Carol Schoning|Nov 7, 2012

We handed out over 240 treats between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.! We ran out and turned the light off so, there may even have been more! We average between 180 and 200, normally, between 5 and a bit after 9 p.m. Carol Schoning Coulee Dam... Full story

  • How about a buzzer?

    Carol Schoning|Mar 28, 2012

Having had two evening visits to our nice, up-to-date hospital emergency room, the first time I went there was no one to be seen, so I pulled the door open. Now when the front door is locked for the night, there is a sign saying, please KNOCK, do not pull door open. REALLY? Wouldn't you think that they could at least have a buzzer, like the old hospital? Carol Schoning... Full story
