Last week›s opinion page had two contrasting letters about President Trump›s recent impeachment. Both letters inspired a reaction from me, so I decided to pipe up. Many have said that President Trump was responsible for what happened at the U.S. Capitol Building on January 6, 2021. His speech from that day and his challenge to the 2020 election are being blamed for the mayhem that ensued when the mob entered the Capitol. First of all, the challenges to the election were Constitutional and not without precedent. In 2004 Senator Barbara Boxer and...
After reading last week’s letter submitted by the Bjorklund’s I experienced a few emotions. It is safe to say that any letter in the opinion section which stirs up any kind of feeling is achieving its goal. The emotions I felt were anger, frustration, and a feeling of not being surprised. I am angry anytime somebody takes something that isn’t theirs. That is theft and is illegal. Freedom of speech is arguably the most important of the five rights given in the 1st Amendment of our Constitution. Any attempt to suppress this right is wrong, no ma...
A letter in last week’s Opinion section blamed gun culture and the NRA for the horrid acts committed by individuals. The guns that are used in these acts are simply the tools that these evil, psychotic, deranged, and/or mentally ill people use to carry out their acts. The reasons for their actions will differ with each individual, but those blaming the NRA are just taking the popular, easy, and wrong route. The letter mentioned that guns are the leading cause of homicide in the United States. If you could magically take away all guns, then the...
While Mr. Hunter’s editorial (“Seeking the fairy tale land of no taxes,” 11/18) makes some good points about how taxes are used to pay for the upkeep of our roads, I take issue with some of the other statements. I do believe that most people realize that some taxes are necessary to maintain roads, provide police/fire protection, keep the parks nice, etc. But how much is enough? He says that “we all want services, and we all want to not pay for them.” That statement does not tell the whole story. We pay income tax, property tax, vehicle license...
After reading Angel Clark's letter in this newspaper, I was troubled by a few of the things that I read. I think some of that can be attributed to a misunderstanding of the U.S. Constitution. First, Angel states that "when our government permits businesses to refuse its citizens service based on religious belief, does it fail to be a government for the people?" What business does the government have telling a private business owner who they can and can't provide goods and services to? Do you really want more government intervention in private...
