  • Actual facts to consider about the school district

    Dennis Carlson, GCDSD Superintendent, retired|Jan 26, 2022

Thanks go to The Star, Jacob Wagner and Scott Hunter for carrying out the school levy survey and printing the results and comments in the January 19, 2022 edition. Voters need to have factual information to help them decide whether to vote “Yes” or ‘No” on the levy. There are a few comments that were included in the article and a related “Letters from our readers” section that I would like to address. Ten years ago, after many years (decades?) of our community communicating the need to replace our three aging and unhealthy schools, Sen. Linda...

  • Inaccurate comparisons made between school districts

    Dennis Carlson, Ed.D.|Feb 3, 2021

The Star is truly a community newspaper that provides information and publishes varied opinions for its readers. I often agree with those opinions that appear on its Opinion Page, sometimes disagree but seldom have no interest in the opinions expressed. I rarely respond to those opinions with which I disagree. However, a reader’s perception of what is being stated can often become that reader’s truth if the opinions are stated without the factual background from which readers can decide for themselves if they agree or not with the writer. I h...

  • On a vote that matters locally

    Dennis Carlson|Aug 1, 2018

I, along with all voters in the Grand Coulee Dam School District, received my primary election ballot in the mail last week. Since it is a primary election, I was almost overwhelmed by the long list of names of people who are seeking to be selected to run in the general election in November to represent us in the U.S. Senate, House of Representatives or state Legislature. While I engaged a momentary urge to vote for GoodSpaceGuy in the U.S. Senate race, common sense finally ruled and I marked the box next to the name of the person I believe...

  • The new school year – it's not all about the new school

    Dennis Carlson|Sep 3, 2014

Many people have been following the progress of our New K-12 school project for a little over two years now. While the new school is at long last becoming a reality and is the most visible change of what is happening in our school district, many other exciting changes are being put in place in order to meet the needs of our students. The State Board of Education and the State Legislature have instituted two changes that go into effect in the 2015-16 school year. Rather than go through two years of major changes in the district, the School Board... Full story

  • Superintendent speaks his mind on proposed league realignment

    Dennis Carlson|Jan 22, 2014

The following statement has been sent to all school superintendents in the Okanogan Valley Superintendents’ Association. Lake Roosevelt HS AD Rich Black has kept me informed in relation to the possible realignment of the Central Washington 2B league that was reported in The Star last week. Relating to full disclosure on my part — my loyalties lie first with LRHS and second with our 2B compatriots. While I can sympathize with Omak’s situation, the 2B league should not sacrifice one or more of its members just to help Omak. Rich and I have discu... Full story

  • Apology issued for remarks at graduation

    Dennis Carlson|Jun 27, 2012

I wish to apologize to everyone who attended the Lake Roosevelt High School graduation ceremony on June 9th. While every student speech is reviewed and approved by the high school principal, occasionally a student will deviate from the approved speech and add some personal comments that, while not intended to offend, come off in a manner that does not reflect the values of LRHS or the Grand Coulee Dam School District. One of our student speakers, during the delivery of his speech, went off script and made some comments that were offensive to... Full story
