  • Proposing goals for local veteransv

    Soy Redthunder|May 27, 2015

I have had discussions with Richard Black, athletic director at Lake Roosevelt High School, about recognizing our area veterans. While attending a district playoff game at Mt. Spokane High School, we noticed a huge banner honoring all veterans. We kind of discussed ways we could do the same in our new school. In the near future, also, there are plans for a new gymnasium. We could sponsor a new scoreboard for the new gym. These are two goals that I would like to propose to the local veterans organizations to seriously consider. I would be willin... Full story

  • Six Raiders named to all-league baseball squad

    John R McNeil II|May 27, 2015

Six Raiders were named to the Central Washington 2B North All League Baseball team for the 2015 season. Devan Black was the only Raider named to the first team. This is Black’s second time on the first team, to which he was named in 2014 as a sophomore. Black was one of the Raiders’ best pitchers. Chance Garvin appears on the league second team for 2015. He was also named to the second team in 2014. Garvin uses his great deal of athleticism to great effect on the field. Senior Trey Nicholson also was named to the second team. Last year Nicholso... Full story

  • Two Lady Raiders named to all-league team

    John R McNeil II|May 27, 2015

Two Lady Raiders have been named to the Central Washington North All-League Softball squad. One is appearing on the list for the second straight year. The other was a newcomer to the squad who has the potential to become a perennial on the all-league team. Head Coach Jamie Lezard had this to say about the All-Leaguers, “They both played great all season.” The returner from the 2014 All-League squad was Senior Savannah Marin. Marin became a big time player for LR both in the field at third base and at the plate. There were games where the Lad... Full story

  • Raider golf ends season at districts

    John R McNeil II|May 27, 2015

Four Lake Roosevelt golfers competed for a state berth at last week’s District 5-6 B tournament at Alta Lake, where Quincy Williams, Darin Whiteman, Lucas Bird, and Jonell Denschel learned the meaning of the term “gallery pressure.” “It was a new experience for all four of our golfers that participated.” Head Coach Steve Files said. “Districts is the only match we play all year in which all teams from our league are represented and the players must deal with real gallery pressure.” District champs for both boys and girls came from Oroville... Full story

  • Texas cowboy wins bull ride

    Scott Hunter|May 27, 2015

Jory Markiss was a happy cowboy Saturday afternoon when he won more than $4,000 as the lone bull rider to make the crucial eight-second mark atop a big bull. Markiss, of Stephenville, Texas, scored an 88-point ride to take home a $4,370 purse from the Ridge Riders' Pro-West Cletis Lacy Memorial Bull Ride. The event also featured another crazy wild horse race, when seven wild horses were let loose against three-man teams whose task was to saddle and ride their horse. A team from Warm Springs,... Full story

  • "Barker Canyon" fire starts an early season

    Scott Hunter|May 20, 2015

About a dozen local firefighters this Friday night are attacking a wildfire across Banks Lake from the Grand Coulee Dam Airport. The fire is suspected to have started from a lightning strike in the storm that passed through the area about 4 pm. Eight firefighters, who were taken to the site by boat, are on foot at the fire, which is not large at this time. No flame is visible from Grant County Fire District 14's incident command at the airport. White and grey smoke is visible, hugging the...

  • Council slithered to a new non-position

    Scott Hunter|May 20, 2015

Our best guess is that last night’s non-decision by the less-than-courageous (being kind) Grand Coulee City Council was a dishonest move predesigned before the meeting to allow elected leaders not to make a decision. If that’s true, it’s disgusting. If it’s not true, it’s still at least disheartening. The city council foisted its responsibility as elected representatives of the people onto an unelected city clerk. She was told it’s now her responsibility to decide whether to issue a business license to a would-be marijuana retailer. A... Full story

  • Time is important, so is listening

    Scott Hunter|May 20, 2015

Governance, like life, is full of trade-offs. One of them is efficiency versus efficacy, and you strive for one at the risk of losing the other. Such was the case at last week’s Electric City Council meeting, where the mayor and a council member slapped a mutually congratulatory high five for keeping the meeting under an hour long. The problem is that perhaps it would have been a better, more productive meeting if they hadn’t. As one who has spent innumerable hours at such meetings, I sympathize with the need to keep them moving. People can... Full story

  • Are there plans to support medical marijuana patients here?

    Tom Hawkins|May 20, 2015

Kudos to Jean Comstock and Jim Pachosa, the Grand Coulee business couple that have asked the city council to grant them a business license for a marijuana retail store near Coulee Medical Center, and to Grand Coulee Police Department Chief John Tufts, who, when asked recently about enforcement problems, said that the department isn’t pursuing recreational cannabis (marijuana) users. It has taken years for this clarification to come; however, it is obviously not a crime for adults, including tenants of the Grand Coulee Manor apartment b... Full story

  • Protecting Civil Rights and national security USA Freedom Act strikes a balance

    Dan Newhouse Congressman|May 20, 2015

No American should fear that their government has made a false choice between prioritizing either national security or civil rights. Our nation needs a continuing, robust debate on the proper balance the federal government should strike in defending American lives and freedoms. As that debate continues, Americans deserve more transparency and accountability—the federal government must address legitimate civil rights concerns and reform intelligence agencies’ approach to surveillance in a manner that maintains security of the homeland. Last yea... Full story

Lake Roosevelt’s senior throwers Katelynn Schilling and Octavio Alejandre qualified last week to move on from sub-districts at Tonasket Wednesday to the District 5-6 meet in Ephrata on Friday. “Our senior throwers excelled in this meet and will be moving on to District competition.” Head Coach Lori Adkins on Schilling and Alejandre’s performance. That was the doubles team of Tanya Ang and Riley Pitner. Ang and Pitner came back from a 4-7 deficit against the Butler sisters of Liberty Bell to win 9-7. • School-clinic partnership will aim for better care

    Scott Hunter|May 13, 2015

Kids at Lake Roosevelt Schools will have more direct access to health care if a plan to that end pans out between Coulee Medical Center and Lake Roosevelt Schools. The project was taken on by a University of Washington third-year medical student studying at CMC. "Across the nation there's this new trend of school-based health centers," explained Jonathan Patberg, speaking at a Rotary Club luncheon last week. In some places, that means building a clinic inside a school, but not here, Patberg... Full story

The annual trip to a Leavenworth challenge course is designed to build relationships and get the kids to work together. The first one took place 2012.
