  • Guitar maker hopes to diversify

    Scott Hunter|May 6, 2015

Terry Reister speaks quite softly, but the guitars he makes sing out loud. Reister and his son, Terry Reister Jr, showed off the elder's products at the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon at The Melody last Thursday. The owner of Sandy's Grocery store in Wilbur started making guitars about 20 years ago, but now it's getting a little more serious. • Sheriff's office wants canine program

    Scott Hunter|Apr 29, 2015

Dogs are "awesome tools" that can reduce the time it takes to search a building for a suspect or a lost child by 70 percent, chase down running suspects, Deputy Mike Earney told chamber of commerce members last week. But they're not cheap and the Grant County Sheriff's Office wants four of them - without federal grants. In other words, Sheriff Tom Jones is looking for the people of Grant County to step up. Earney said the agency doesn't want to take federal money for the program because it... Full story

  • At the mercy of criminals and city councils

    Tom Hawkins|Apr 29, 2015

I have been asked a few times recently if I have received a Ten Day Warning/Eviction Notice from Housing Authority of Grant County due to having my freedom banner on my balcony railing. I have not, and I seriously doubt I will, at least not before Housing Authority personnel would first take an interest in stopping those who grow, process, and/or sell marijuana products out of their apartments here. I do not want to see anyone hassled, busted, et cetera over cannabis; however, I do not think it is fair for such individuals to receive... Full story

  • Congress should repeal the estate tax and make the sales tax deduction permanent

    Dan Newhouse Congressman|Apr 29, 2015

Americans prosper and create prosperity for others when they are able to keep and spend more of what they earn. April is Tax Month, and it can be a reminder that nothing in life is ‘as certain as death and taxes,’ to paraphrase Benjamin Franklin. The federal tax code should be consistent, encourage economic growth, and allow Americans to plan with certainty. That is why I supported legislation passed in the House this month to reduce the tax burden on families, farms, and businesses by repealing the federal estate tax (or “death tax”) and to... Full story

  • Above and beyond the call of duty

    Betty Brashears|Apr 22, 2015

During a recent illness, I was having some serious health problems and needed medications. I had, just had, an 8:30 doctor’s appointment. It was already late afternoon and I couldn’t get my new defibrillator to work, and my meds weren’t ready. I called to the clinic for help. Melissa Stanley, RN, said she would come by my house to fix it after work. By then it was 5 p.m. She quickly had the faulty one fixed. While talking to her, I mentioned the antibiotic and two other meds that still weren’t ready. She got on the phone and went to the pha... Full story

  • "Ferguson" doesn't represent most law officers

    Sheriff Harvey Gjesdal|Apr 22, 2015

A couple of weeks ago I was talking to a group of teenagers who were part of a scouting organization. The first question I asked was, “What do you think of when you think of the police?” A 17-year-old boy raised his hand and said, “Ferguson.” I was hoping to hear something about the police helping and protecting people. It hit me that now would be a good time to recognize the elephant in the room. Because of events (or perception of events) in the state and nationwide, law enforcement has received a black eye. For some people, the image o... Full story

  • Baseball beats Manson, loses to Okanogan

    John R McNeil II|Apr 22, 2015

Raider baseball started last week with a 13-3 win over the Manson Trojans in Coulee Dam. It wasn't a forgone conclusion. Manson held the Raiders scoreless for two innings from their 4-1 deficit in the third inning, whittling the Lake Roosevelt lead to 4-3 by the fifth. Then the Raiders came alive, batting in loaded bases and even stealing home to add nine points, while allowing only two more for the struggling Trojans. Then LR hosted the Okanogan Bulldogs in a doubleheader Saturday. The... Full story

Coach Files had this to say about the course, “We held our own on a very difficult nine-hole course,” Files said, “very fast greens and tight fairways.” “We’ve been making steady improvement in matches and have been working hard at practice so far,” Files said. “Our kids have been upbeat and supportive of e... Full story

    John R McNeil II|Apr 22, 2015

Next Wednesday, April 22, is Earth Day, and everyone is invited to the event occurring from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., where more than 50 agencies and businesses will have information booths set up to show what they do, or help others do, to be kind to the environment. • Summit on future of old school yields new ideas

    Scott Hunter|Apr 15, 2015

A "summit" held to garner ideas about the future of the former Grand Coulee Dam Middle School was deemed a straight-up success by organizers, who met recently to discuss the March 12 event that brought together 19 agencies and businesses with an interest in the facility. The building, which was originally Grand Coulee High School, is mostly empty following the opening last fall of the new Lake Roosevelt Schools complex in Coulee Dam. What to do with the big building has been a concern on the min... Full story
