    John McNeil II|Jan 29, 2014

Having suffered a four-point loss earlier in the week, the Lake Roosevelt boys were looking to rebound Saturday when they hosted the Hornets of Oroville. They got their bounce. In the first quarter, LR did not score for six minutes and 30 seconds. At the end of the first LR was down 13-4. But the Raider offense came alive in the the second quarter, scoring 29 points and holding the Hornets to just 11 for a 33-24 LR lead at the half. Lake Roosevelt struggled on offense in the third, scoring just... Full story

  • LR wrestlers are Dream Duals class B champs

    John McNeil II|Jan 29, 2014

Raider wrestlers claimed the B championship at the Washington Dream Duals held in Spokane Valley Saturday. The tourney at East Valley High School featured nine mats in two gyms and a cafeteria, with 30 teams from all classifications taking part. LR was one of four B schools in the Dream Duals; the others being Mary Walker (Springdale), Northwest Christian, and Selkirk. Because of two wrestlers being unable to attend the competition, four Raiders competed at a higher weight class to help the team compete to win the tourney. “Our attitude going i... Full story

The Columbia Basin Development League reported to members in its email newsletter last week that the bureau said Dan McCulloch would be released Jan. 22. McCulloch, 54, was flown to Harborview Medical Center with extensive burns Nov. 18 after a mishap with switch gear for Pump Generator 12 in the John W. Keys III Pump-Generating Plant. Of the 12 units in the plant, six are... Full story

  • Report: Nursing staff has made big progress at CMC

    Scott Hunter|Jan 22, 2014

It was uncomfortable at first, but the nursing staff at Coulee Medical Center has made a cultural adjustment for transparency in the service of improvements to patient care at the hospital. So said Chief Nursing Officer Ramona Hicks in a presentation to the chamber of commerce on substantial changes in nursing and other processes at the facility. Hicks, whose CNO position gives her oversight of nursing, surgical services, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, outpatient services, labor and delivery... Full story

  • Heroism recognized

    Scott Hunter|Jan 22, 2014

Lincoln County Sheriff Wade Magers last week awarded Wilbur resident Seth Coffman for his role in the saving the life of a woman thrown from a boat near Keller Ferry Marina in 2011. Magers gave Coffman a letter and a “Lincoln County Sheriffs Office Challenge Coin.” Coffman commandeered a boat just before noon Oct. 7, 2011 when a boat was noticed circling out of control in tight circles. “You had heard the commotion and responded to the marina where you commandeered a boat and heroically responded to the scene to assist the two strangers in ne... Full story

  • Outdoor burning is worse than they thought

    Scott Hunter editor and publisher|Jan 22, 2014

Authorities clamped down on a local fire chief this week, who said he didn’t know burning the kinds of materials he had in his burn pile was illegal. He’s not alone in a lack of understanding of this state’s laws regarding outdoor burning. City hall seems to think that if he had contained his fire to a certain size, had a ready means to extinguish it and kept the burn to unoffending materials, such as leaves, it would be OK. It would not. It is against the law in this state to burn anything within “Growth Management” boundaries. It has been... Full story

    John McNeil II|Jan 22, 2014

After a big win over Manson, the Raider boys dropped their win-loss record to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in Central Washington 2B play after losses to Kittitas and White Swan last week. LR still sits at the number-two spot in the Central Washington North standings. Against the Manson Trojans Jan. 14, Lake Roosevelt used fast-paced play along with an aggressive attack to build a halftime lead of 24 points. The Trojans never came back, and in the end LR picked up a 66-35 win to start league play. "We... Full story

The Lady Raiders beat Manson and Kittitas last week, before losing to White Swan Saturday at home. With the two wins, the Lake Roosevelt team improved their overall win-loss record to 4-7, and to 2-1 in Central Washington 2B play. The Lady Raiders hosted the Manson Trojans Jan. 14, for their league opener. LR suffered a setback early as Keya FastHorse left the game with an injury within a minute of the game starting. "When Keya got injured, it was like when Katelynn (Schilling) went down and... Full story

Raider wrestling had a rare three-contest week, travelling to Wilbur, Okanogan, and Royal City. The first match of the week was at Wilbur Jan. 14 for a mixer against Wilbur-Creston, Republic, Almira-Coulee-Hartline, and Lakeside. • Hospital commission forces switch in attorneys

    Scott Hunter editor and publisher|Jan 15, 2014

A majority of hospital district commissioners voted Thursday to immediately hire new legal counsel, then went into closed session with the new attorney. Commissioner Jerry Kennedy said the board’s reasons for changing attorneys had been compounded the week before when the hospital administration mailed a notice of a privacy breach, reportedly to thousands, saying a doctor had violated federal patient privacy rules. “One of the hopes that I had was that … having legal counsel involved in that would help minimize reputational damage to the insti... Full story

  • Doctor: Building a tool for CMC didn't breach privacy

    Scott Hunter|Jan 15, 2014

One of the doctors who felt his reputation was unneccessarily harmed by a notice sent to his patients and placed in the newspaper, last week explained the work he had been up to. In an interview, Dr. Andrew Castrodale said the “HIPAA” notice, made under the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, implied the work had been about figuring out bonus pay, but was actually meant to devise a reliable tool for measuring and reporting the efficiency and productivity of health care providers at Coulee Medical Center. Although it did... Full story

  • Bill seeks resolution for convictions during '60s Fish Wars

Elliot Suhr, WNPA Olympia News Bureau|Jan 15, 2014

Nearly half a century after hundreds of American Indians were arrested during the "Fish Wars" in the Northwest, a proposed state bill would give those who were convicted a chance to clear their records. Along with arrests, American Indians were repeatedly harassed and beaten while trying to exercise their treaty rights to fish, according to Hank Adams, a Sioux-Assiniboine tribal advocate. "Fish-ins"--illegal encampments modeled after the sit-ins of the civil rights movement--were set up by...

  • Park district looks at iffy budget

    Scott Hunter|Jan 15, 2014

by Scott Hunter A draft budget for the Coulee Area Park and Recreation District could be slashed in half, or not, depending on what other agencies do. The $57,005 bottom line for the agency with no direct revenue of its own would have to be altered substantially if levels of support from local cities stay low, or if Grant County commissioners don’t approve a grant request for work the district would like to accomplish this year. Chairman Phil Hansen’s simple budget includes a donation of $9,000 from Grand Coulee and Coulee Dam, but neither has... Full story

  • Adults by age, actions as children

    Michael Palanuk|Jan 15, 2014

Having recently moved from the Grand Coulee Dam Area, I thought that it was a community to have been proud of for many reasons. However, the recent actions of the new mayor of Coulee Dam and the head administrator for Coulee Community Hospital make me feel like I just got out in time. Mayor Wilder’s grandstand play on the computer issue and Graham’s thinly veiled attack on Dr. Castrodale make it clear to me that neither belongs in the position he holds. Frankly, hurt feelings that can’t be put aside on the part of both men tell me that their... Full story

  • Thanks for the support

More importantly, thank you for the concern shown for my children and parents after their unfortunate crash. It will be a long road of recovery for them as well. • Raiders prevail over Entiat Tigers

    John McNeil II|Jan 15, 2014

The Raiders defeated Entiat at home on the 11th due in part to a high scoring fourth quarter. LR won by the score of 51-42 over the Tigers to improve the Raiders' win-loss record to 5-4 overall. The Raiders started slow as the first field goal of the game came with four minutes left in the first quarter. Entiat took advantage of the Raider sluggishness to take the lead 10-9 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter Entiat played with a determination to avenge their earlier loss this... Full story

  • Wrestlers place highly across state

    John McNeil II|Jan 15, 2014

Five of 12 Raider wrestlers placed in last weekend’s Rainier tournament, securing a ninth-place finish for Lake Roosevelt at the 17-team tournament. Some teams at the Sgt. Justin Norton Memorial Tournament split their JV wrestlers off, increasing the scored squads to 31 at the event on the other side of the Cascades. LR and Pateros were the only B schools in attendance. At 126 pounds, James Monaghan knocked off a number-one seed, which impressed both his coaches; and Oscar Pakootas faced a t... Full story

  • Central Washington 2B League to alter dramatically in the near future

    John McNeil II|Jan 15, 2014

The opt-up deadline for the 2014-16 classification cycle has passed and the final number counts are in. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s 2B category will hold 59 schools in the new classification cycle, up 11 from the current cycle. The number spread for 2B in the 2014-16 cycle will be 92-225 students in grades 9-11. After a heated school board meeting, in which many spoke for and against moving down, Okanogan decided to drop down to 2B rather than opt up to 1A. Brewster did not repeat the 11th-hour opt up as in 2012 and... Full story

  • New mayor asks sheriff to investigate missing computer, records

    Scott Hunter|Jan 8, 2014

A computer used by Coulee Dam’s former mayor is missing, and the new mayor has asked the sheriff to investigate the possible theft of public property and destruction of public records. Newly elected Mayor Greg Wilder said when he entered the office at the beginning of the year, a brand new computer was already there for his use. It had never been used, and no files existed on its hard drive. Wilder, who defeated Quincy Snow in the mayoral race last fall, had earlier lodged a complaint with the state Public Disclosure Commission alleging the i... Full story

  • Hospital district com. may meet Thursday

    Scott Hunter|Jan 8, 2014

A special meeting of the commission that governs Coulee Medical Center, originally called for last night, was postponed, likely until Thursday night, Jan. 9, because an attorney central to the agenda could not make it out of Spokane due to snowy roads. [Update 1-9-14: Confirmed: the meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight.] A majority of the five commissioners called the special meeting to consider, among other things, hiring a different law firm, a proposal that died at a regular meeting of the commission Dec. 26, less than two weeks earlier.... Full story

Maya Best, 31, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with unspecified injuries after the 2007 Ford Freestyle she was driving slid off highway 155 about 11 miles north of Nespelem, close to Disautel Pass. As Best was southbound at 7:15 a.m., her car hit black ice and slid off the road to the right and into a boulder, then came to rest blocking the northbound lane at about milepost 56, according to a Washington State... Full story

  • Fire in power plant mostly smoke

    Scott Hunter|Jan 8, 2014

A fire that scrambled area fire departments to the Third Powerhouse at Grand Coulee Dam last week started in an air filter. It put out a lot of smoke, but, unlike fires in other power plants at the dam last year, didn’t affect power production. A contractor working on the overhaul of of G-24, one of six massive generators in the power plant, had been sand blasting the interior of the generator’s shaft, according to Public Affairs Officer Lynne Brougher. In that process, a dust collector separates air from dust, which it deposits in a bar... Full story

  • Re: "Skateboarders told route too sketchy" (12/23/13 Star)

    Dale Thomas|Jan 8, 2014

The kids were long boarding, not skateboarding! They need a hill to ride down and now someone felt the need to tell the police. Were they really doing something that terrible? It is risky, but the alternative in the winter seems to be sitting in their room and playing video games. I remember riding dirt bikes at the Hills below East Heights until the complaints came, then it got shut down. We then rode in the mud when the river was down or when the lake was down, until that was shut down. So we rode in Barker Canyon until that was recently... Full story
