  • Re: "Local help available for health insurance questions"

    Sheri Shumway|Oct 23, 2013

In referring to your article praising Coulee Medical Center and Foisy and Kennedy for their assistance signing people up for mandatory health insurance, I would like to add Dawn Ensminger and Darcy Epperson at the IHS Clinic in Nespelem. These women have been to countless hours of training and are assisting our Native American community in this monumental task as well. Sheri Shumway... Full story

  • Runners shine in Oroville

    John McNeil II|Oct 23, 2013

Raider cross country performed like a state contender at the Oroville Invite last Saturday, with all runners posting good times. Raider Head Coach Gary Darnold was pleased, not only by his squad's performance, but also because "for the first time this season, all varsity boys' and girls' runners were back in action," he said. The Raider boys finished sixth overall at Oroville and second among the B teams. Ashley Palmer finished fifth overall, with a time of 21 minutes, 5 seconds. Palmer... Full story

The Raiders dropped their third game in a row last Friday when they lost to the Oroville Hornets 42-14. The loss dropped Lake Roosevelt’s win-loss record to 0-3 in league and 3-4 overall. The Raiders are now tied with Bridgeport for last place in the Central Washington 2B League. The game started slow until Oroville scored its first touchdown with 4:25 left in the first quarter. Kyle Holt returned the ensuing kickoff to the 45-yard line, setting up the Raider offense with a short field. Soon thereafter, an Austin Rosenbaum pass was picked o... Full story

  • Lady Raiders have rough week

    John McNeil II|Oct 23, 2013

The Lady Raiders dropped all three of their volleyball matches last week, with the last two decided in three games. At home Oct. 15, the Lady Raiders came out flat against Oroville and flew behind. In the second game, LR showed some spark and tied up the match at one all. Then the momentum swung back to the Hornets in the third game. Down two games to one the Lady Raiders played the Hornets tough in the fourth game where it went tit for tat. In the end, the Hornets had the staying power to claim the victory three games to one. At Bridgeport... Full story

We sent each candidate an email asking for their responses to a set of questions. If no email address was provided on their candidate declaration on file with the county, we placed a phone call to them. Voters will soon receive their mail-in ballots for the election that concludes Nov. 5.... Full story

  • Time for new leadership

    Rachel Moses|Oct 16, 2013

Time for new leadership I read the letter to The Star written by Mayor Snow’s daughter and asked Mr. Wilder if he was going to respond, and he said that he “wasn’t going to argue or debate the issues with a father’s daughter or any other stand-in!” And he asked me, “Where is the mayor himself? What does HE have to say?” Mr. Wilder is right; we never really seem to know where Mayor Snow stands on the issues. We want a more open government with fair and impartial leaders willing to actually listen to their constituents and to think the important... Full story

After losing the first game, the Lady Raiders came back and won the second game before losing the next two. Head Coach Nate Piturachsatit was upset with the way the girls played, but he pointed out that they still have a shot at districts if they put their minds to it. Kayley Duclos had four kills for the... Full story

  • Raiders lose in fourth to Trojans

    John McNeil II|Oct 16, 2013

Mistakes on both sides of the ball and penalties helped Manson nab a win over the Raiders last Friday night at Manson High School. Lake Roosevelt fumbled on their opening offensive drive, allowing the Trojans to strike quickly for a touchdown to take the lead 7-0. Austin Rosenbaum, back from the injury list, ran in a QB keeper for LR’s first score of the night to tie it up, 7 all. • Nespelem eighth graders each get laptops

    Scott Hunter|Oct 9, 2013

Last Friday, eighth graders at Nespelem Elementary School gained something in common with students in far-flung school districts around the continent intent on making sure students are prepared for the future that’s already here. Each Nespelem eighth grader received a new laptop computer to use for all their school work. While many “one-to-one” districts are opting for cheaper tablet computers (the Los Angeles Unified School District just launched a $1 billion program), the Nespelem Schoo... Full story

    John McNeil II|Oct 9, 2013

Cross country races at Can Am by John R. McNeil II After a week off, Raider cross country returned to the races at Colville High School for the 2013 Can Am race Oct. 5. Normally the race is held in Kettle Falls at the National Park Service’s Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area, but with the government shutdown, the race had to be moved to Colville High School. Head Coach Gary Darnold said that, unlike in football, the bye week is not an advantage in cross country. “Having an extra week doe...

  • Government shutdown impacts local agencies

    Scott Hunter and Roger S Lucas|Oct 2, 2013

The latest failure of Congress to compromise has shuttered two local branches of federal agencies but not affected operations at Grand Coulee Dam. The federal government went into shutdown mode Tuesday as the U. S. Senate and the House of Representatives failed to compromise on a continuing resolution that would allow the government to pay the bills already spent and approved by Congress. Locally, barricades and recorded messages greeted many who tried to contact federal agencies or receive... Full story

A 34-year-old man hanged himself in the tribal corrections center Sept. 24, a press release from Colville Tribal Police stated Tuesday. Police Chief Cory J. Orr said police responded last week to the Colville Tribal Corrections Center near Nespelem and found Aaron J. Swan in a cleaning closet. “Mr. Swan had hanged himself with a bed sheet,” Orr stated. Swan had been in the facility for two days, held on tribal charges of rape and indecent liberties, the release said. • Compromise is at the heart of governance

    Scott Hunter editor and publisher|Oct 2, 2013

Remember when you were a little kid and had to learn, likely through repeated lessons, that you just can’t always get your way? That you have to learn to give a little just to get along in this world? That’s not just a childhood lesson, it’s a basic principal that undergirds the healthiest societies, keeps disagreements civil and greases the wheels of democracy. It makes civilization itself possible. But a new faction within the Republican Party rejects that premise, insisting that compromise is evil. Many in the House of Representatives got el... Full story

  • Re: low-cost lab tradition ends

    Sheryl Moore|Oct 2, 2013

I was very disappointed several months ago when I read that the annual low-cost blood screening would no longer be available at Coulee Medical Center during National Hospital Week and our local health fair. My husband and I have found this to be a convenient yearly event in which we could participate to help detect any health problems before they become a major concern, as well as fulfill the required screening to update prescriptions. I question CCH Administrator Scott Graham’s interpretation of the law that governs public hospital d... Full story

  • Raiders hold off Lancers for third win

    John McNeil II|Oct 2, 2013

  • A view from the hospital bed

    Scott Hunter editor and publisher|Sep 25, 2013

So, I’m very glad I took out that MedStar membership. Took a ride last night. The good pros at Coulee Medical Center figured out why I was so weak and sent me to Sacred Heart ICU. Turns out I have multiple pulmonary embolisms (blood clots in lungs). Yes, that’s bad. A surgery or two is coming up, along with some lengthy recuperation. Life is what happens when you had other plans. So, although your submitted photos are always welcome in The Star, they will be more so in the coming weeks. You can email them to gwen@grandcoulee.com, along wit... Full story

  • Lady Raiders fight hard through long week
