  • Wildfire contained near Indian agency

    Scott Hunter|Jun 19, 2013

A wildfire of unknown origin was contained by firefighters Friday night after consuming a little more than 200 acres of grass, brush and some trees just east of the Colville Indian Agency campus and within site of a housing development. The fire that started Friday afternoon just off Buffalo Lake Road apparently surrounded, but did not burn, two nearby houses. Fire engines were protecting those houses Friday evening as tenders ferried water to a hilltop and the farthest advance line of the fire...

  • Going fishing on Lake Roosevelt? Choose your fish wisely

Liz Carr Washington State Department of Health|Jun 19, 2013

Fishing is part of our way of life, and fish are a delicious and nutritious part of a healthy diet. Yet testing shows certain fish from the Upper Columbia River and Lake Roosevelt contain chemicals (mercury and PCBs) that can harm health. While some species have high levels of chemicals, other species are much lower. The chemicals are of greatest concern for babies and children. Women who are or might become pregnant, nursing mothers, and children should carefully follow the state’s meal recommendations to avoid or reduce exposure. Choosing f...

If anyone could figure the odds of an international finance engineer ending up in Grand Coulee running a quilting business, Marlene Oddie could. She’s opening her KISSed Quilts business at 12:15 p.m. Friday in the little shop that was last an ice cream parlor at 301 Main Street in Grand Coulee. Oddie, with masters degrees in engineering and business administration, spent a decade steeped in the world of high, arcane finance, figuring out complex problems in derivatives markets around the w...

  • A bridge to action?

    Scott Hunter|May 29, 2013

The collapse of a Skagit River bridge on I-5 last week should give all of us pause to think about our nation’s longterm strategy, including local infrastructure. Stuff wears out, even steel bridges. That’s a dynamic that challenges the best intentions of priority pickers (also known as budget makers) in government who must continually weigh how to spend our money. Such constant pressure over decades can even influence the standards by which supposedly objective measurers of safety decide on acceptable risks. Consider that until rocks fell on...

Chyenne Kelly-Marconi capped her track season by placing third in the triple jump at the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires 2013 1B, 2B, 1A Track and Field Championships at Eastern Washington University last Friday. The six points Kelly-Marconi scored for the Lake Roosevelt Raiders were the only points LR would score at the meet. The junior took that prize recording a triple jump of 33 feet and a quarter inch. In the second round, Stanczak shot a 110, giving her a combined score of 214 for the...

  • Lady Raiders wrap up 2013 at state

    John McNeil II|May 29, 2013

The Lady Raiders made their second-ever trip to the state softball tournament last weekend. The weather at the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires 2013 2B State Softball Championships in Yakima did not cooperate on Friday, and all games were delayed till Saturday. In the first game of the day, LR faced defending state champion Pe Ell, which showed no mercy to the Lady Raiders, defeating them 28-2. The Ladies looked to rebound in the afternoon game against Asotin, which had lost their morning game to LaConner. But Asotin played...

  • Denied recount, tribal candidate files grievance

    Scott Hunter|May 22, 2013

A candidate for the Colville Business Council has filed a formal grievance against the tribal election committee, saying she was denied a recount required as automatic by tribal law, she said. Charlene BearCub, who ran for the position 2 seat in the Nespelem District, was edged out in the May 18 primary by two votes. She said the tribal election code requires an automatic recount if the difference between candidates is three votes or less. “I verbally requested a recount, TWICE, due to the confusion and the ballot counts not matching,” Bea...

  • Lady Raiders move on to state

    John McNeil II|May 22, 2013

The Lady Raider softball team pulled off a big upset at the District 5-6 tournament last weekend when they beat Bridgeport to move on to the state tournament in Yakima this weekend. This move toward state started with the Lady Raider 15-9 win at White Swan May 14, when LR put together a solid game of defense and had three girls bat above .500. Keya Fast Horse hit everything that was thrown her way, Tristan Adolph batted .750 for the game, and Riley Epperson was .600 at the plate. Beating White Swan allowed the Lady Raiders to advance to the...

  • LR Babe Ruth Baseball starts

    John McNeil II|May 22, 2013

LR Babe Ruth started their summer season last week as they took on Omak May 14 for a single game at Greene Field. Jacob Palmer had the only base bit for LR, as Omak went on to win in six innings, 13-3. Coach Jeremy Miller said many of the middle school-age players showed signs of first game jitters. This wore off quickly as on the 18th when LR hosted Chelan for a doubleheader. In the first game Chelan jumped out to a two-run lead in the top of the third. LR came back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs to knot the game up at two...

In its sixth year, the competition asks high school teams from around the Pacific Northwest in four broad categories. LRHS competed in three categories this year, with each category having more than 40 teams, most from the west side of the state in large school districts with special s...

  • On restricted input

    Tom and Kathy Skordas|May 15, 2013

We were quite surprised and frankly disappointed that Coulee Dam residents are not permitted to speak at future council meetings. In recent months this input has been very positive and certainly reflective of the desires of most residents. We hope our next council and mayor are more receptive to the voices of Coulee Dam residents. Tom and Kathy Skordas...

  • Float missed a queen

    SJ Carnahan|May 15, 2013

The Queen of Hearts Pageant Float was minus “One Queen of Hearts” who has been ignored or overlooked twice now and never asked to participate after the original pageant was over. Seems like this Queen of Hearts pageant is not following the guidelines of its purpose. The judges favored and bestowed upon the pageant leader’s daughter most awards when she was by no means any better than the other girls which definitely showed favoritism. Did she need more of a morale boost than the rest of the girls? A public apology would be nice and a moral...

  • Lady Raiders end regular season on sour note

    John McNeil II|May 15, 2013

Lady Raider softball closed the 2013 regular season with a six-game losing streak that included last week's losses to Bridgeport and Liberty Bell. The Lady Raiders played the Fillies for Senior Night May 7 at Grand Coulee Dam Middle School, where they lost, 10-3. On Saturday they travelled north to the North League-leading Liberty Bell Mountain Lions, who showed the Lady Raiders why they are in that position. In each game of the doubleheader LB defeated LR by 10 runs with the final scores being...

  • Raiders finish season 12-9

    John McNeil II|May 15, 2013

Raider baseball wrapped up the 2013 season last week at Wenatchee Valley Junior College with a 8-2 loss to White Swan. Head Coach Ted Piccolo recognizes that White Swan was a tough opponent. The Raiders played without Justus DeWinkler due to his injury and another was not at full speed. Kendall Piccolo pitched five innings striking out 3 Cougars and giving up only 1 earned run on 2 hits and two walks. Brady Black came in to relieve Piccolo for the last two innings and gave up no earned runs and no hits while striking out 2 Cougars. At the...
