  • Raider rackets challenged

    John McNeil II|Apr 24, 2013

Raider tennis was challenged in last week’s three matches by fatigue, long bus rides, and tough opponents. LR traveled south to White Swan April 16 for a Central Washington B match against the Cougars. The four-hour bus ride came back to haunt the Raiders as both squads were swept by the Cougars. Daniel Campobasso provided a bright spot for the Raider boys hanging in there with Xavier Valladares in the first, forcing a tiebreaker. The final score has Valladres winning 7-6 (7-2), 6-3. “Daniel improved much over his first match with Xavier, whi...

  • Baseball has tough week

    John McNeil II|Apr 24, 2013

Raider baseball had a tough week last week as they dropped all three games they played. At Liberty Bell April 16, the league-leading Mountain Lions scored three runs in the first inning and the Raiders could not answer as they went on to lose 6-2. Brady Black, on the mound for five innings, gave up two hits, four earned runs, and struck out four. Kendall Piccolo came in to relieve and gave up only one hit in his inning on the rubber. Piccolo led the team at the plate, going two of four. The...

  • Updated 2:30 p.m.: Power goes out in Coulee Dam

    Scott Hunter|Apr 17, 2013

The power outage in Coulee Dam will likely last until 5 or 6 p.m. tonight, one source told The Star. Lynne Brougher, with the Bureau of Reclamation, said USBR personnel are helping Coulee Dam crew and their contractor restore the service after a Coulee Dam's contractor, Christiansen Electric, cut a main power line during excavation. It's not clear whether the relatively new, buried line had been properly marked. Businesses in Coulee Dam remain closed, although service to Coulee Dam Credit Union'...

  • Teacher arrested, could face deportation

    1

A Spanish teacher at Lake Roosevelt High School is in Okanogan County Jail this week, facing charges of forgery and identity theft, after being arrested last Thursday by Coulee Dam police. Guillermo Guzman has also had a hold placed on him by Border Patrol agents and he will face deportation hearings in Tacoma when he is finished in Okanogan County, according to a jail spokesman. Guzman was picked up by Coulee Dam police officers along with a Border Patrol agent after a man with a similar name...

  • USBR: local liveability an issue in recruitment

    Scott Hunter and Roger S Lucas|Apr 17, 2013

The Bureau of Reclamation is having trouble attracting and retaining new skilled employees, Power Manager Mark Jenson told a number of local leaders Monday afternoon. Jenson said that often a combination of local factors creates a problem for workers recruited or transferring to work here on the Grand Coulee Dam project. Jenson stated that project employment, now 466 workers, will move to 582 by September of 2014. That’s a payroll jump from the present $32.6 million to $42 million in 2015. That expected boost of 116 employees is “not a tem...

  • As home smoldered, impossible to feel alone

    Whybarks|Apr 17, 2013

We would like thank everyone who has helped us out since we lost our home in the fire. It was such a lonely and devastating thing to watch nearly everything we owned go up in flames. As many of you may know, my husband and I both grew up in Brewster, and then moved to the larger town of Spokane. We missed the feeling of a small community, so when Safeway had an opening here, we moved without a thought. It only took moments following our loss to remember exactly why we wanted to be in an area like this. Even before the house was done...

  • Photo of students unprofessional

    Cathy Krohn|Apr 17, 2013

I find it in very poor taste and highly unprofessional to include a picture of innocent students with the article about Guillermo Guzman. It has been a very traumatic event for them and this just adds another element of hurt to what they are already experiencing. Cathy Krohn...

  • Gift of public funds?

    Michael Palanuk|Apr 17, 2013

As a long time resident in Grand Coulee I loved our Community Hospital and Clinic. Some great staff members made it a desirable place to get excellent attention. The Blood Draw as an annual event was a real positive for a small hospital and helped keep a lot of us on the right track. If I had one complaint about services there, it was the inaccessibility of my preferred doctor. For a long time I thought this was because he was popular, but after having recently moved from the area, I’ve come to the conclusion that the duties are not shared e...

  • Re: "City: no daycare on Main Street" 4/10/13

    Carol Schoning|Apr 17, 2013

Have none of these council members ever looked for daycare in this area? Impossible! So most children are cared for by unlicensed caregivers in their homes or relatives who don’t always WANT to do it. I would think in the interest of community needs, it would be a small issue to change the codes. While I’m writing, we also have nothing for people working evenings or weekends; there is a desperate need for that. Carol Schoning...

  • Raider track moves forward with first two-meet week

    John McNeil II|Apr 17, 2013

Raider track came back from spring break with a two-meet week. The first, at Bridgeport on April 9, was the Brewster Co-Ed Relays. This is a meet where boys and girls are teamed up for relays in all field events. All races are relays, including the sprint and Distance medleys “As a team we considered the relays to be a hard training day, they also proved to be a lot of fun and a team building experience,” Head Coach Lori Adkins said. “We definitely piqued team interest in relay events.” This was not an athletic.net-scored event so results...

  • Raiders on a win streak

    John McNeil II|Apr 17, 2013

Raider baseball went on a winning streak, sweeping away all opponents last week. It started on April 9 at Bridgeport, where the Raiders 10- runned the Mustangs, 11-0. Brady Black continues to be stout on the mound and Kendall Piccolo closed out the win in the fifth inning. Justus DeWinkler was the big bat for the night, picking up three doubles. On April 11, the Raiders travelled north to face the Tonasket Tigers. It was a offensive day, as both squads scored over 10 runs apiece. The Raiders’ nine-run fourth-inning performance put them over t...

  • Raider Golf still has a way to go

    John McNeil II|Apr 17, 2013

Raider golfers took on Oroville and Manson at Oroville April 9. There were no team scores for the match. “We still have a long way to go,” commented Head Coach Steve Files, “but all our JV girls made the trip and competed really well for their first match.” “Our chipping and putting needs to get much better in order to compete with the league’s top players,” he added. Tanecia Stanczak took home the medal for the girls’ match with the score of 105. On the boys side, Austin Rosenbaum led the boys again with a 108. Brandon Desautel and Jo...

  • Softball posts first wins of the season

    John McNeil II|Apr 17, 2013

The Lady Raider softball squad posted their first wins of the 2013 season last week by beating the Manson Trojans Saturday in Grand Coulee. Head Coach Jamie Lezard said the girls were happy to be playing at home and picking up the first wins of the season in front of the home crowd at Grand Coulee Dam Middle School. Earlier in the week, Lake Roosevelt travelled to Pateros and lost in a shutout 20-0. The Lady Raiders were 10-runned in the first inning, making mental errors on the field that hampered their defensive play. The Nannies had a stout...

  • Girls heating up the courts

    John McNeil II|Apr 17, 2013

The Raider girls’ tennis squad posted back-to-back wins last week, defeating Wilbur-Creston April 8 and Davenport April 13. Lake Roosevelt’s boys beat Wilbur-Creston, but fell to Davenport. In both cases, the matches were the first against W-C and the Gorillas in Head Coach Steve Archer’s memory. Holly Carriere was determined to win and did so against Rhea Castrodale 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Emily Williams won by a deceptively large margin as Coach Archer elaborates, “Emily’s match was closer than the...

  • Coming down

    Scott Hunter|Apr 17, 2013

Steven Riehart, of 24-7 Property Maintenance drops a limb from a huge fir tree at the Fercha home at Fir and Civic in Coulee Dam. Reportedly one of the oldest trees in town, it measured about five feet across at its base, but owners were concerned about its health and risks posed in wind storms. Fir trees are notorious for tipping over in high winds....

  • Daycare is a good cause

    Scott Hunter|Apr 10, 2013

Those looking for a good place to create a daycare center should be encouraged and helped to answer this critical, unmet need in the community. To the casual observer, it may sound like a picayune cause over which to get worked up, but in this community it’s actually a critical economic development question, not to mention a potential child safety problem. Not having access to licensed daycare leaves people who might wish to enter the local workforce no option but to stay out, or find a job that pays enough to hire a live-in nanny. That k...

  • Disc golf proposed for North Dam park

    Scott Hunter|Apr 10, 2013

They’re not the Frisbees you’re used to tossing around on Saturdays, but they’re similarly shaped and heavier, and disc golfers will travel to courses set up for playing with them. Disc golf is a growing sport that Josh Rabe thinks would catch on in Grand Coulee and provide an extra activity for tourists. Rabe is proposing to set up a “nine-hole” course around North Dam Park, an idea endorsed by the Coulee Area Park and Recreation District. Rabe met with district commissioners Monday for the second time, and provided them with a cost breakdown...

  • City leadership should be as effective at helping business as it is in hindering it

    Richard and Mandi Button|Apr 10, 2013

Well, once again the Grand Coulee City Hall’s elected officials have proven that they are EXTREMELY effective when it comes to stomping out business in the Grand Coulee area, and not as good when it comes to cultivating an atmosphere for it. Our question to you, Mr. Mayor and the Council Members that have failed to act over the last couple weeks regarding the day care center (whomever you may be, we did hear it wasn’t all of you but complacency isn’t much better in our opinion), why does it take so long to do anything in your city? Why six mont...

  • Lady Raiders lose to Gorillas on cold day

    John McNeil II|Apr 10, 2013

The Lady Raiders dropped two games to Davenport last Saturday in cold wet weather that forced two rain delays. Lady Raider pitching had a hard time finding rhythm and walked in 17 runs in the first game and eight more in the second. Batting improved for LR as they had runners in scoring position several times and even loaded the bases four times. But the Lady Raiders, being unable to bring those runners home, led to both final scores for the doubleheader favoring Davenport 22-1 and 27-5. Head Coach Jamie Lezard noted that Tristan Adolph, Riley...

  • Raiders beat Gorillas

    John McNeil II|Apr 10, 2013

On a chilly, wet, windy April day the Lake Roosevelt Raider baseball team defeated the Davenport Gorillas 10-2. This was scheduled as a doubleheader but game 2 was cancelled after the 1st inning due to rain. With the win, the Raiders improve their record to 5-4 overall and rebound from the previous week's losses to Liberty Bell. Brady Black had another great performance on the mound giving up only one earned run and striking out 4 Gorillas. Justus DeWinkler came in to relieve and pitched three...

  • Bad politics about to really hurt at home

    Scott Hunter editor and publisher|Apr 3, 2013

Political stupidity in Washington, D.C. is about to come down hard on our local area. Some economists argue that the sky will fall because of the “sequester,” a budget cut imposed by Congress and signed by the President in 2011 in a move designed to make such blind, across-the-board cuts so painful that they would never be politically feasible, forcing opposing parties in the nation’s fiscal policy debates to compromise. That was a huge political miscalculation based on the perception that things are as they have ever been. They’re not. Te...

  • Federal cuts set to hurt local tourism

    Scott Hunter and Roger S Lucas|Apr 3, 2013

Tours, visitor center hours and laser light show offerings might be curtailed because of budget cuts, officials confirmed this week, but they’re still hoping for a reprieve from the national budget cutback known as “sequestration.” Although tours at Grand Coulee Dam resumed Monday after a normal winter stoppage, a hiring freeze across the Department of Interior has made it impossible to hire the extra help needed to keep operations open all week through the normal tourism season, explained Lynne Brougher, public affairs officer with the Burea...

  • Raider Baseball beats Pateros, loses to Liberty Bell

    John McNeil II|Apr 3, 2013

Raider baseball had an up and down week as they defeated the Pateros Billygoats at Greene Field on March 25, then lost a doubleheader to the Liberty Bell Mountain Lions on Friday at home. The season win-loss record for the Raiders now stands at 4-4 overall and 4-2 in Central Washington North play. Brady Black pitched five innings, giving up no earned runs, one hit, and four strikeouts in the no decision. Justus DeWinkler came in to relieve in the top of the sixth, with the Raiders leading 6-0....

  • Tennis finding winning combinations

    John McNeil II|Apr 3, 2013

The Raider boys swept Oroville’s tennis squad last week up north, and the girls’ squad beat Liberty Bell in Coulee Dam. In Oroville March 26, the Raider boys posted their first squad win of the season. For the Raider girls, the match ended as a draw, 2-2. Daniel Campobasso won over Oroville’s Ronel King 6-0, 6-1. Brandin Smith knocked off Connor BoCook by a dominant 6-2, 6-1. Then in doubles action, Campobasso and Smith teamed up to knock out Joe Sarmicuto and Nathan Hugus 6-1, 6-0. “Very...

  • Golfers improve against Oroville

    John McNeil II|Apr 3, 2013

Raider golf travelled to Desert Canyon on March 26 to take on the Oroville Hornets in head to head competition. The Raider boys were the only squad representing LR; the girls did not compete. The Raiders came up short on the final score tally ( Oroville 196 - LR 225) but individual boys showed solid improvement, including Brandon Desautel, who “shaved 18 strokes off his score from our first match, very impressive,” noted Head Coach Steves Files. Desautel shot a 47 to lead the Raiders. Aus...
