  • Glad reason prevails on marijuana use

    Tom Hawkins|Feb 19, 2014

I am glad to live in a community where we can put to rest the myth that smoking marijuana is a fringe activity engaged in only by those on the margins of American society. In reality, marijuana smoking is extremely common, and marijuana is the recreational drug of choice for tens of millions of mainstream, middle-class Americans. Many successful people including business, professional and political leaders admit they have used marijuana. With the recent changes in our state marijuana legislation, we can finally stop acting as if otherwise... Full story

  • Commission begins hospital redirection

    Scott Hunter|Feb 12, 2014

Facing another litany of complaints about mismanagement, hospital commissioners Monday directed changes in two key policies that have angered community members and medical staff. The commission directed CEO Scott Graham to find a legal way to relaunch a popular lab test discount program that has taken place each spring for years but was halted last year on advice from the hospital district’s former attorney. The personnel/compliance com-mittee had been “bombarded” by concerns from the community after Lincoln Hospital of Davenport adver... Full story

  • Coulee, what's your sign?

    Scott Hunter editor and publisher|Feb 12, 2014

It’s times like these that make you wonder if there’s something to astrology. There is always turmoil somewhere in the world, but when it rears its chaotic head in local communities, it begs the profound question, What the heck? With months of employee and community unrest surrounding Coulee Medical Center coming to a head, and a year of heated discontent within the city of Grand Coulee coming to the fore this week, it’s hard not to ask that question. There may be no sign of the Age of Aquarius in sight, but let’s hope that as the new year un... Full story

    Kenneth Butch Stanger|Feb 12, 2014

This is very short reply to the recent letter to the editor authorized by Mr. Truman Covington. First of all, the information referenced in your fourth paragraph is entirely inaccurate. Colville Tribal Federal Corporation – CTFC has completed Fiscal Year 2013 with the following benchmarks: • Completed FY 2013 highly profitable for the third consecutive year. CTFC operates from October 1st through September 30 each fiscal year. • CTFC was selected as “Minority Enterprise of the Year” by the Washington State Minority Business Council for the oper... Full story

    John McNeil II|Feb 12, 2014

The Raider boys lost two games last week, just as squads are jockeying for district berths, giving them a 9-9 win-loss record overall, 4-5 in league play. The Raiders now need to win out to hold on to the number-two spot in the Central Washington 2B North to make it to the district tournament. • Citizens grow impatient with hospital situation

    Scott Hunter|Feb 5, 2014

With their constituents voicing impatience, hospital district commissioners took no actions after coming out of a closed session last week, but they voted in new leadership and streamlined committee assignments. Tom Poplawski got applause from the full meeting room when he said deferring the beginning of action on a standoff between administration and medical staff was "unacceptable." "Make a decision and let's move on," he said. "We need to start with a new goal here of getting somewhere."... Full story

  • Readers should keep up the good work at hospital

    Scott Hunter editor and publisher|Feb 5, 2014

People are understandably anxious about the lack of resolution of the issues embroiling Coulee Medical Center. While we feel obliged to report on the controversy, it’s not as easy, and much more technical, to report on the hospital’s progress. Although tensions are high and morale may be low at that crucial community institution, everything has not really gone kaput, as one person recently said, despite appearances. After all, CMC reported a slight gain for 2013 of $71,000, and that’s a big improvement from the hole it was in earlier in the yea... Full story

Lake Roosevelt is in second place in the north half of the league, with a two-game lead over the Bridgeport Fillies. The Lady Raiders started the Jan. 28 game at Bridgeport slow. • Sheriffs busy busting bad guys

    Scott Hunter|Jan 29, 2014

  • Doctors and staff matter the most

    Jennifer Schwartz|Jan 29, 2014

I would like to express my concern over the recent matters which have come up concerning the CMC Hospital and the alleged breach of patient privacy between a physician and his wife. First of all, I have to say that my family; my great-grandparents, grandparents, several uncles, aunts and cousins, my children, my spouse and I, have all been very happy with the care we have received from the staff at Coulee Medical Center (CMC); mainly, from Drs. Andrew Castrodale, Jacob Chaffee and Wendy Hughes. Dr. Castrodale delivered both of my beautiful,... Full story
