  • Readers split on idea of four-day school week

    Jacob Wagner|Oct 30, 2019

Readers responding to an online poll are split on the idea of changing to a four-day week at Lake Roosevelt Schools, with most being against it. An article in last week’s Star described a nuanced discussion that took place among Grand Coulee Dam School District board members and the superintendent on the topic of going to a four-day school week. The discussion touched on some of the ramifications of making such a change, including how it would affect childcare and how long it would extend the school day. Although clear answers on these q...

  • Recycling arguments on recycling

    Jacob Wagner|Oct 30, 2019

Recycling isn't as easy as it sounds, and there are a lot of different views on how efficient it is. With the Coulee set to get a recycling container at the Delano Regional Transfer station, education on recycling is being emphasized. The topic was discussed at the Oct. 14 Regional Board of Mayors meeting of three mayors, a city administrator, a concerned citizen, the transfer station operator, and a Sunrise Disposal owner who was on the phone. Kim Christensen of Grand Coulee raised the topic,...

  • Work done on Northrup Canyon's "old wagon road"

    Jacob Wagner|Oct 30, 2019

Work was done recently on the “old wagon road” trail at Northrup Canyon, including using a “trackhoe” as well as laying down gravel in areas. The Washington State Park Service approved the work which was done by the Crab Creek Riders, a chapter of the Back Country Horsemen of America. The work was done to “improve the conditions of the trail for safer public access,” explained Jared Liening, a park ranger at Steamboat Rock State Park. “It’s smoothing it out and applying gravel in areas that needed it due to washout and erosion slipping off of...

  • Two kids and a lady

    Jesse Utz|Oct 30, 2019

Sometimes things are very fun around this place. Since Karrie has a new job title of Grandma, the fun level has picked up dramatically. There are tears sometimes, but so it goes with a 9-month-old and a 1-plus-year-old toddler. There are fun times and stressful times but all valuable times. Have you ever watched a baby fall asleep in her highchair? It is hilarious for all except the babe in question. Opening her eyes when you try and give her a bite, very slowly and looking at you annoyed...

  • Elementary gym floor to be replaced

    Jacob Wagner|Oct 30, 2019

The gym floor at Lake Roosevelt Elementary needs replacing only five years after the gym, and the school, were built. The Grand Coulee Dam School District board approved the payment of $15,000 toward the replacement floor, the rest of the cost being covered by Northern Hardwood, the company that had installed the original floor, who verbally agreed to cover the rest of the roughly $30,000 total cost of replacing the floor, even though it is no longer under warranty. "The membrane has shifted and is coming loose," Superintendent Paul Turner...

    Jacob Wagner|Oct 30, 2019

A Raider had the best time in the state for 1.5-mile races, the ninth best in the nation. Lake Roosevelt's eighth-grade cross country runner, the aptly named Chase Marchand, had an impressive year, putting up the best finish time in the state for 1.5-mile races, the ninth best in the United States, when he ran in Omak Oct. 9, finishing in 7 minutes, 55.3 seconds. Marchand had six first-place finishes throughout the season, one second place, and two thirds. Some of his other first places include...

    Jacob Wagner|Oct 30, 2019

The Lake Roosevelt Raiders defeated a worthy competitor from the Central Washington 2B league Friday, solidifying the Raiders' status as league champs. Even if the Raiders were to lose to Brewster on Friday, resulting in a three-way tie between LR, Brewster, and Tonasket, the Raiders hold the tie-breaker, Head Coach Tim Rasmussen said. The Raiders executed a solid win against the Tonasket Tigers Oct. 25, defeating them 37-6. Both teams had a win-loss record of 2-0 in the league, 5-1 overall...

The Lady Raiders defeated the Lady Hornets 7-0 in Oroville on Oct. 22, where Sadi Trotter, Madisyn Toulou, and Bryn Chaffee each scored two goals, and Jasilynn Schilling scored another. "Oroville was a good learning experience for some of the forwards," Head Coach Micah Esmond said. "We had 14 shots at goal from Jasilynn and Sadi...

  • Local district may consider four-day week for area schools

    Jacob Wagner|Oct 23, 2019

What if every weekend were a three-day weekend for students and staff at Lake Roosevelt Schools? If a four-day week were implemented, how would that affect childcare? How would that affect school days? The topic was discussed at the Oct. 15 Grand Coulee Dam School District board meeting. Numerous ramifications were discussed, but the consensus was to take the pulse of those who would be affected. Superintendent Paul Turner noted that the Bureau of Reclamation has already been on a four-day work week, and that the Colville Tribes have recently...

  • School board to face difficult decisions on what to cut

    Jacob Wagner|Oct 23, 2019

Some unpopular decisions may have to be made within the Grand Coulee Dam School District to balance the budget. Superintendent Paul Turner brought the topic up at the district's Oct. 15 board meeting, urging the board to bring up areas of the budget that they think may need to be scrutinized. "How do we cut $400,000?" Turner asked. "I've been thinking through it pretty strongly." Turner said he's been coming up with a list of items to potentially be cut, and he wants the board to let him know wh...

  • Mayors approve raise in dumping rates

    Jacob Wagner|Oct 23, 2019

People may note a bit more of pinch when they haul that Saturday load to the dump, beginning next summer when prices go up slightly. The Regional Board of Mayors last week approved a raise in transfer station dumping rates from 6.2 cents a pound to 6.7 cents. City Administrator of Electric City, Russ Powers, who prepared a proposed budget for the RBOM, said the income of the transfer station simply isn’t matching up with the expenditures. “It’s just the cost of things,” Powers said. “Insurance, fuel, goods. More and more people are maybe drivin...

  • Senior Profile: Jonathan Cante

    Jess Utz|Oct 23, 2019

Here is my second profile of a senior at Lake Roosevelt High School this year. If I was to look at this year’s seniors and pick one that has grown up the most over the years I have known him, I would pick today’s subject. Jonathan Cante is one of those kids that is just plain likable on all levels. So here’s Jonny… We sat in my office at Lake Roosevelt, and it was a quick conversation that was packed full of focus and confidence. I started by asking about the senior year and the answer came qu...

  • The old wagon trail in Northrup Canyon

    J. Kemble, Them Dam Writers online|Oct 23, 2019

George and Caty Northrup weren't the only family in the canyon at the turn of the 20th century. Scheibner brothers Charles and Fred had moved into the canyon a couple years earlier and were already known for their produce, in particular, luscious strawberries. In 1901, with the backing of the farming community around Steamboat Rock, the brothers petitioned the county for a bond to create a road up the south talus slope wall. The main purpose for the new road was to move fresh produce up to the...

  • Raiders blow out NW Christian Crusaders

    Jacob Wagner|Oct 23, 2019

The Raiders shut out Northwest Christian in Coulee Dam under the Friday night lights where a light rain likely didn't help the Crusaders' mood in their 43-0 defeat. The Raiders got on the board first on a fourth-down play with eight yards to go, when quarterback Hunter Whitelaw connected with Malachi Rasmussen on a touchdown pass, followed by a two-point conversion run by Cameron St. Pierre that put the Raiders up 8-0. The Raider defense held the Crusaders back, forcing them to punt back to LR....

  • Deputy: Prop 1 could change criminal dynamic in county

    Jacob Wagner|Oct 16, 2019

A proposition on the November ballot could bring millions of dollars into Grant County coffers to fund a new jail and add to local police budgets, and two officers explained the measure at a luncheon last week. Chief Deputies Dustin Canfield and Darrik Gregg from the Grant County Sheriff's Office spoke about Proposition 1 at the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon Oct. 10. They encouraged those present to vote yes to increase sales tax in Grant County by 0.3%. The estimated $5.5...

  • Birdie Hensley is running for council position 2 in Electric City

    Jacob Wagner|Oct 16, 2019

"I'm always interested in the places I live and what's going on and I'd like to be a part of it," Birdie Hensley said about running for reelection on the city council. "If you're not on the council you don't know what the heck's going on." Hensley has served six non-consecutive years on the council, and is currently finishing a four-year term. Hensley spoke to some of the limits and frustrations of being on the council. "What the people don't understand is there's a lot of things we'd like to do...

  • Rupe running for council pos. #2 in Electric City

    Jacob Wagner|Oct 16, 2019

Bob Rupe is running again for Electric City council. Rupe previously served on the council for 12 years, the last time being about eight years ago, he said. Rupe said he'd like to work on the city's infrastructure "to make sure our water, sewer lines are in good repair, along with the roads." One issue, Rupe said, has been the order in which those things are repaired. "Pearl, here, was the most beautiful street in the whole town," he said. "Then the sewer or water system went out, and they had...

  • The credibility of the trusted

    Jesse Utz|Oct 16, 2019

As I was growing up in the 1980s and 90s, if you read a newspaper you could take it as fact. The same could be said about the local and national news on television. No matter what paper you read or what channel you preferred your news, it was literally the same news, just different reporters reporting it. Fast forward to today’s sources. It is different on every channel and in every paper. Everyone has a different view of what happened, or it does not appear at all. What happened? We used to s...
