Liberty Bell came in first with 71 team points. Tonasket finished second with 92 team points. LR edged out Manson by just one point for the last team spot to state, 102-103. John McNeil II|Nov 5, 2014

Lady Raider Volleyball missed out on going to the district tournament after losing to Liberty Bell in a tiebreaker match Thursday, three games to one. “This was a particularly hard loss as it was the last game of the season and our goal was to make it to the postseason,” Head Coach Nate Piturachsatit said. “Our girls have tons of potential if they are willing to put in the gym time.” After losing to Okanogan Oct. 28, the Lady Raiders needed to pick up their spirits and play their hearts out aga...

Raider football ended the 2014 season with a loss to Soap Lake on Senior Night at Lake Roosevelt, 37-7. LR finished 1-7 overall and 0-5 in Central Washington 2B South League play. "Not the result we wanted on Senior Night," Head Coach Steve Files said. "Our two seniors, Trey Nicholson and Curtis Nault, were invaluable to us this season." • Raiders lose fourth in a row

    John McNeil II|Oct 29, 2014

On a wet night in Kittitas, the Raiders lost their fourth game in a row to the Coyotes by the score of 72-6. “Disappointing performance by the Raiders,” Raider Head Coach Steve Files commented. “We were not competitive against Kittitas.” LR tried early to fake a punt deep in their own territory. Kittitas stopped the Raiders for a loss and quickly scored. Momentum was on the Coyotes side as LR fumbled on the next offensive snap and the Coyotes picked it up for another touchdown. LR’s only score came on a Nathaniel Hall 72-yard kickoff return fo...

  • Lady Raiders split week, need help to make district

    John McNeil II|Oct 22, 2014

The Lady Raiders lost at home to the Bridgeport Fillies Oct. 14 in a four-game match that featured many close scores. LR and Bridgeport both made mistakes that allowed the other team to stay in or win games. In the first game of the match, the Fillies struck hard and fast and cruised to an easy win. LR came back in the second game, playing with greater effort. The Fillies did come back into it but the Ladies held them off for a win. In the third game, Lake Roosevelt built on the momentum from the second game and built an early lead. The Fillies...

  • Ladies snap losing streak

    John McNeil II|Oct 15, 2014

Lady Raider Volleyball split its matches last week. At home Oct. 7, Lake Roosevelt faced a Liberty Bell team they had defeated back in September, but the rematch turned into a Mt. Lion victory 3 games to 1. “It was disappointing to lose to LB in three games,” Head Coach Nate Piturachsatit said. “We beat them in four our prior match, and then to lose so convincingly is difficult to take.” Kammi Rosenbaum served up six aces against the Mt. Lions. Sean Garvin served two aces of her own and served with 79 percent success. Jocelyn Moore chipped...

    John McNeil II|Oct 15, 2014

Raider boys' cross country had a successful day at Omak Oct. 7, taking second out of seven teams. "This was a total team effort as each runner on the team makes an equal contribution to our team's success." Cascade, a 1A Leavenworth high school, finished first with five runners finishing in the top 10. Coach Darnold explains the scoring system: "Cross Country is a sport wh...

  • Vikings spoil Raider homecoming

    John McNeil II|Oct 15, 2014

In the first meeting between the Raiders and the Mabton Vikings, the Vikings came out the victors. Mabton defeated LR 32-0. “Mabton was clearly the more physical team tonight,” Head Coach Steve Files said. “We are capable of playing better, and we’ll have to if we want to be competitive in our division.” In the first quarter both teams’ defenses held, firm with Jacob Palmer recording two sacks for the Raiders. The Mabton defensive line was able to disrupt the Raider offense with their penetration of the Raider offensive line. The score was tied...

Lady Raider Volleyball lost both matches last week to Central Washington 2B North leaders Brewster and Okanogan. Lake Roosevelt now owns a 2-5 win-loss record in league play and 3-5 overall. Looking ahead to the last half of the season, Head Coach Nate Piturachsatit wants the team to keep building on the positives. "The goal now is to keep some good momentum and continue to work on areas that we are struggling in," he said. In the match against Brewster, LR jumped ahead of the Bears early in...

  • Raiders defeated by Cougars

The Cougars, said Raider Head Coach Steve Files, are “ a good ball club and made very few mistakes and capitalized on most of ours.” LR’s only touchdown came on the first drive of the game from an Austin Rosenbaum to Jacob Palmer connection for 35 yards. Octavio Alejandre’s extra point was good. Files praised the LR defense. “Our defense played well for...

    John McNeil II|Oct 1, 2014

In front of a sparse home crowd on Sept. 26, the Raiders won their first game of the season, holding off the Bridgeport Mustangs, 21-20. “Great team win for the Raiders,” Raider Head Coach Steve Files said. “We were tough, resilient, and opportunistic out there.” The Raiders saw a great improvement in the play up front with the return of senior Octavio Alejandre to the offensive line. The improved line play helped Jesse Louie and Oscar Pakootas to solid runs on the first offensive drive that was capped with a Josiah Desautel 17-yard touchdo...

  • Ladies hit three-match losing streak

    John McNeil II|Oct 1, 2014

The Lady Raiders lost both their volleyball matches last week to Manson and Tonasket. Both losses were in four games, 3-1. The loss to Bridgeport Sept. 18 put the Lady Raiders on a three-match losing streak. “It’s time for us to regroup and evaluate what is working and what isn’t and make some changes,” Head Coach Nate Piturachsatit said, still confident the team can pull out of the slump. “I’m excited to see how the girls overcome our current situation and move ahead to the level of volleyba...

  • Cross country opens with two-race week

    John McNeil II|Sep 24, 2014

Raider Cross Country had a delayed start to the 2014 season as Moses Lake cancelled their Sept. 12 invitational. Instead, the Raider cross country team started at Bridgeport Sept. 16 with a 2.2-mile race. The Bridgeport Invite featured all Central Washington B schools, and was a good early season gauge of how the Raiders stack up to league competition. "This was our first two races of the season, and for this being early in the season all performed well, giving their team their best efforts,"...

  • Lady Raiders split matches

    John McNeil II|Sep 24, 2014

Lady Raider Volleyball picked up its third win a row Sept. 16 at home against Oroville. “It was our first home game, the girls were pretty excited and a little nervous playing at home,” Head Coach Nate Piturachsatit said. “Once the nerves settled in, they took control. It was a fun game.” The Lady Raiders won the match in four games, 25-23, 25-10, 22-25, 25-21. Oroville is sitting at the bottom of the Central Washington 2B North with an 0-3 win-loss record in league. Piturachsatit was pleased with the performance of the Lady Raiders against...

  • Raider football lose non-league game to Soap Lake

    John McNeil II|Sep 24, 2014

The Raiders faced, but fell to, the Eagles in Soap Lake last Friday in a non-league football game. LR was unsuccessful in bringing home the first win of 2014 as Soap Lake defeated the Raiders, 26-12. “We had our moments, but for the most part didn’t play as well as we are capable,” Raider Head Coach Steve Files commented. LR had some good moments in the game. Josiah Desautel scored a touchdown on a 45-yard run. And Nathaniel Hall, back from an injury sustained last week against the Tigers, scored the other Raider touchdown on a 71-yard rush....

  • Lady Raiders win two matches

    John McNeil II|Sep 17, 2014

Lady Raider Volleyball had a successful travel week, beating both Liberty Bell and Soap Lake. “We have been working hard on the mental game of volleyball, playing through adversity, and they have done exactly that,” Head Coach Nate Piturachsatit said on how the Lady Raiders found ways to win their matches. In the Central Washington 2B North League opener Sept. 11 at Liberty Bell, the Lady Raiders on more than one occasion found themselves behind the Mt. Lions but dug deep and came back to win. In a see-saw, non-league match Sept. 13 at Soap Lak...

LR Football opened their 2014 season Friday night at home against the 0-1 Tonasket Tigers, as some Raiders had to step up to fill starting roles because of ineligibility or injuries. "I thought we were fearless and competed extremely hard out there," Head Coach Steve Files said. "Great effort by our players." In the first quarter, the Tigers opened with a nine-minute drive that was capped with a 30-yard field goal for the only score of the first quarter. The Raiders looked to be turning the...

  • Lady Raiders struggle in opening tourney

    John McNeil II|Sep 10, 2014

Lady Raider Volleyball travelled to Davenport Sept. 6, for the season opening tourney. Only 13 Lady Raiders (seven varsity, six JV) were practice eligible to partake in the tournament. The small numbers hurt the Lady Raiders in matches where the opponents were able to sub out players but LR was not. LR lost to Omak, Almira/Coulee-Hartline, and Davenport in two-game sets. The Ladies also lost to Bridgeport in a three-game set to round out the day. “This is always a challenging tournament as we face teams who had very successful volleyball p...

  • Moving rural America forward

    John Crabtree|Aug 20, 2014

In January, President Obama declared that despite Congressional logjams, “America does not stand still — and neither will I. So wherever and whenever I can take steps without legislation to expand opportunity for American families, that’s what I’m going to do.” The Center for Rural Affairs has stood firmly in favor of the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed Clean Power Plan as a vital first step in reducing carbon emissions from existing coal-fired power plants, addressing climate change, and creating opportunities for renewable e...

  • Free market gas case study coming

    John Overby|Jul 9, 2014

I seem to recall the Star's editorial support of the "status quo" of gasoline prices here in the Coulee a few weeks ago. It was implied that detractors just didn't “know Jack" and that the higher prices were due to the free market system which locals are willing to pay for. It appears we will now get to see a case study in free market economics now that a new source is offering gas at 25 cents a gallon less. I just wonder if the Bureau's motor pool or the cities’ motor pools will likewise look out for the taxpayers whom they work for and sta...
