Lake Roosevelt opened with a tough doubleheader loss to the Okanogan Bulldogs last Saturday in Okanogan. An inability to close out innings hurt the Raiders. “In game one, we gave up five runs (3,2) after committing an error that would have closed out the innings,” Coach Ted Piccolo noted. The Lady Raiders travelled to Cashmere last Saturday for a season opening doubleheader against the Bulldogs. LR travelled without one of their key players who could not make the trip. Because of this, the coaches had to shuffle people around to fill the hole which meant some girls had to play in positions they had never played before. In his freshman year, Chance Garvin carried a big load for the Raider basketball team last season, playing guard, rotating underneath as a post, and playing stout zone defense all as a brand-new player on varsity basketball. All this was made even more amazing as Garvin came into the season with a knee injury that had ended his football season and threatened to take away his basketball season as well. The Lady Raiders ended their season last Friday at Mt. Spokane High School, losing to the Northwest Christian Crusaders in a WIAA Regional game 64-29. The Raider wrestlers took home their highest placing trophy ever Saturday, placing second in the state in the B classification. Liberty Bell took home the championship, scoring 112 team points to the Raiders’ 79. LR edged out Pomeroy for second by 13 points, 79-66. The Lady Raiders came away with third place at last week’s District 5-6 basketball tournament at Wenatchee High School. Lake Roosevelt will move on to the regional tournament this Friday at Mt. Raider wrestling finished second in the Region 2 Wrestling Tournament last Friday and Saturday at Reardan High School. Lake Roosevelt scored 158 points to finish 10 points behind champion Liberty Bell. Of the 12 wrestlers present, the Raiders will send seven to compete at next weekend’s state tournament in Tacoma, with two more qualifying as alternates. The Raiders ended with a win last Thursday at Bridgeport to finish the 2012-13 season with a 7-13 record. The Raiders had been eliminated from postseason play Tuesday with a loss to Oroville. This was the first losing season since 2005-06 and the first time a Raider team failed to make it to districts since the 1998-99 season. In the last week of the regular season, the Lady Raiders sealed up the number one spot into district competition from the north half of the league. Their must-win victory over the Bridgeport Fillies last Thursday came after a loss to the number-two Oroville Hornets on Feb. 5. The Raider wrestlers came home with a championship trophy from the Eastern Washington North B Sub-Regional last Saturday. Lake Roosevelt scored 173 points, edging out second-place Kittitas by only one point. The placing was so close that the difference between number-one LR and number-five Mary Walker was only seven points. This is the first District/Sub-Regional championship for LR wrestling since 2002. The Lady Raiders won two of three games last week, extending their win streak to eight games. They took on the 12-4 Tigers at Entiat Jan. 29, whom the Lady Raiders had beaten by only two points in the previous meeting in December. This time LR built an 18-point lead going into halftime. The Raiders losing streak extends to four games as last week they lost on the road to Liberty Bell on the 31st and at home last Saturday to the South - leading Riverside Christian Crusaders. These losses hurt LR’s chance of a berth to Districts as now they find themselves in 4th place in the North behind Bridgeport who has the head to head win advantage over LR. The Raiders four-game win streak was snapped by a fourth-quarter comeback by Bridgeport on the Jan. 22. Then the Raiders dropped to second-place Manson last Friday, allowing the Trojans to tie with them atop of the Central Washington North standings. Raider Wrestlers finished the regular season last Saturday at Pateros where they wrestled in a preview of this week’s sub-regional meet in Republic. At the league mixer in Pateros, the Raiders wrestled 27 matches against all-league competition. With a victory over Oroville last Friday, the Lady Raiders moved into first place for the Central Washington North. The victory also extended their win streak to four games. The Raiders’ win streak moved to four with a victory at Oroville last Friday. The four-game win streak has also placed the Raiders atop of the Central Washington 2B North. Raider wrestling traveled to East Valley last Saturday to take part in the Dream Dual Wrestling Tournament which featured most of the top teams in Eastern Washington. At the 2B ranks, Liberty-Spangle and Selkirk did not team up to fill out their rosters, instead competing as separate teams to give the field four 2B squads. Raider wrestling had a busy Christmas Break wrestling at the Othello girls and JV tourney Dec. 22, Selkirk on Dec. 29, and last Saturday at Warden. The Othello Tourney was a late add and the Raiders who went impressed Head Coach Steve Hood. “Guys really stepped up and wrestled well at Othello,” he said. It was close all the way, with the 0-8 Cougars leading by only four points most of the time on their home court. After cutting their opponents’ lead in half in the third quarter, the Lady Raiders still accepted a 68-39 defeat in White Swan Friday. Lake Roosevelt was down by 24 at the half, but came back hard in the third quarter to cut the Cougar lead to 12. The Lady Raiders went three for four over the Christmas break, recording wins over Waterville, Omak, and Liberty Bell. In the Waterville game at home Dec. 21 the Lady Raiders had to contend with a determined Lady Shocker team who kept it close as the first half score showed LR up by only five points.
