The Raiders bounced back from a loss to Pateros by defeating the Mansfield Kernels Dec. 18. LR led the whole game, outscoring the Kernels 4-1 in the second quarter to lead at halftime 31-14. The...
by John R. McNeil II The Raider wrestlers took fifth at the Cashmere tournament last Saturday in a field that featured mostly larger schools and only two 2B schools, LR and Kittitas. “We wrestled well,” Head Coach Steve Hood said. “Felt good to finish ahead of Kittitas and Omak.” The tourney winner was 1A Mount Baker from the Northwest Conference with 181 points. Teams finishing ahead of the Raiders included Caribou Trail League representatives Quincy in second and host Cashmere right on their heels at third. Medical Lake of the Northea...
The Lady Raiders lost to the 1B Pateros Nannies in a close league game Friday 53-43. When asked what needs to improve, Head Coach Wallace Pleasants said, “Everything, mostly how to play through fouls and the girls not to get us to hard physical play.” The Nannies attacked the Lady Raiders from the start with hard physical defense. But LR kept the score close as Danielle Laramie, Katelynn Schilling and Rickyna Sam led the scoring in the first half with the Lady Raiders behind by only four points, 26-22. At the beginning of the second half, the...
Chance Garvin scored all three of the Raiders’ first-quarter points at Pateros last Friday as LR went on to lose to the Billygoats in a low scoring affair, 47-38. Head Coach Jeff Brisbois said the team’s overall game effort was down. “We came out flat and never got back into the game,” Brisbois said. “It’s like we lost what spark we had from the win Monday,” referring to the LR victory over Entiat, who had beaten Pateros. The first quarter finished with the score Pateros 5, LR 3. The scoring heated up in the second quarter as the Pateros shoot...
The Raiders picked up their first win of the season Monday against the Entiat Tigers by the score of 59-56. The Entiat Tigers came in Monday on a two-game winning streak and looked to make it three at the cost of the Raiders. It was an uphill battle for the Raiders most of the game. The Tigers held the lead for most the game and had two big shooters in Jeremy Davis and Truong Tran. At the end of the half, it was Entiat 28, LR 24. After halftime, the Raiders stormed the floor, taking the lead...
The Lady Raiders shed a cloud of early-season defeats quickly by defeating the Tonasket Tigers on Dec. 4, 60-36, then besting undefeated Entiat at the last second Monday night. The Tonasket game started slow with the first points scored at 6:30 in the first quarter. Tonasket defense was strong and came up with points as the score at the end of the first quarter was LR 16, Tigers 14. The game stayed close in the second quarter as the Tigers took advantage of LR miscues for a halftime score of LR...
Raider wrestling had a busy week as they travelled to Warden for a dual meet last Thursday then trekked to Connell Saturday for the early season Connell Tourney. At Warden, the Raiders did not match up well as Warden fills out every weight with depth. LR did record four wins against the Cougars, with Sean Waters at 195 pounds taking care of business and Kodie Horn along with Orrin Gross receiving forfeits. The Warden meet was “good for exposing our weakness,” Head Coach Steve Hood said, “wh...
On Thursday night in Okanogan the Bulldogs posted a season-opening win over the Raiders 85-28 Thursday night in Okanogan. The new Raiders had trouble contending in the paint against 6-6 Trevor Hathaway and 6-4 Justin VanderWeide of Okanogan, who scored 18 points together but pulled down twice that in rebounds. The Raiders were led by the solid spirited play of Drew Saxon, who scored nine points and tried to get things moving in the second half with steals and trying to spark the offense. Austin...
Raiders’ wrestlers started the season strong Saturday with a third-place finish at the Davenport Invitational. The Raiders scored 130 points with two champions, two second-place finishers, a third-, and two fourth-place finishers. Opening the regular season in Okanogan last Thursday, the Lady Raiders were handed a hard loss by the high flying Lady Bulldogs. The final score of 76-22 is one of the bigger losses in recent memory. “We need to improve everything, offense, defense, physicality -- everything needs to improve,” said Lady Raiders Head Coach Wallace Pleasants after the game. In the first quarter, the Lady Bulldogs jumped ahead quickly. Katelynn Schilling led the Lady Raiders offensively in the first quarter sco...
Danielle Laramie and Tanecia Stanczak were both selected by the coaches to the First Team All Central Washington North Volleyball team. These two seniors played great seasons and were recognized by the coaches for their efforts. Laramie became the leader for the Lady Raiders during the mid-season swing, which saw Lake Roosevelt climb up to challenge Liberty Bell and Bridgeport for playoff spots. Laramie’s serving and all-around abilities on the court lifted teammates and invigorated the team to new heights of success. Next season, Head Coach N...
Five Raider football players have been recognized this week by league coaches, and two were chosen for both offense and defense. The coaches of the Central Washington 2B League got together last week to name the outstanding players of the season who deserve to be recognized with “all league” honors. The coaches selected seniors Sean Waters and Justus DeWinkler for both the all-league second-team offense and defense. Waters overcame an injury and a position change on offense to earn the honor on offense; and played hard on defense, pro...
by John R. McNeil II The Raider girls’ cross country team competed at the state tournament last Saturday in Pasco for the first time since 2005. All five girls ran hard and finished with good times for each individual. When the judges at the WIAA Dairy Farmers Of Washington Les Schwab Tires 2012 Cross Country State Championships tallied up the points, the Raider girls had achieved something every high school athlete desires: placing at the state competition. With the score of 195 points, the R...
A nervous Lady Raider squad faced the top team in the league last week, then ended their second chance at a state berth to close their season with a seven-win, nine-loss record. The Lady Raiders played their last two matches of the 2012 season on the road at Bridgeport and Kittitas. At Bridgeport Tuesday, the Lady Raiders started the match playing timid and inconsistent. “They were nervous and honestly scared to be playing the number-one team in our league,” Coach Nate Piturachsatit said. “We talked at the beginning of the game how there is no...
After more than 60 years of Raider/Beaver/Tiger dominance over Bridgeport in football, the Mustangs are now getting even. Last Friday they notched their second win in a row over the Raiders. With the 34-12 loss, the Raiders dropped to 1-9 overall, and finish sixth in Central Washington 2B play. When asked what the attitude was after the game, “We were disappointed with the outcome for sure,” Head Coach Steve Files said. “Not the way we wanted to finish our season.” The game started well for the Raiders as Trey Nicolson picked up a fumble on the...
Senior Night was spoiled for the Raiders as the White Swan Cougars scored often and cut short many Raider drives for a 54-20 victory on LR’s home field Friday night. The score at halftime stood at 21-7 Cougars, and it looked like the Raiders would have a chance. Then in the second half, the Cougars ratcheted up their performance level and left the Raiders in the dust. “I thought we competed hard throughout the game,” Head Raider Coach Steve Files said. “They are a quality team with good speed....
The Raider Cross Country girls took the championship at the District 5-6 B Tournament in Ellensburg and will compete as a team at the state race this Saturday in Pasco for the first time since 2005. All the Raider girls ran for personal records, which made it possible for the Raiders to sneak past Oroville by one point for the championship. Head Coach Gary Darnold was ecstatic at the win. “To see the looks on their faces when they found out they were champs was what makes coaching so w...
The Mountain Lions came prepared and swept the Lady Raiders 3-0 to move into a league tie with Lake Roosevelt. Last night’s volleyball matches are the determining factor as to who will be second and third from the North Central league moving into tomorrow’s and Saturday’s district matchups. With the loss to Liberty Bell, the Lady Raiders now own a four-win, three-loss league record, with their overall record at 7-7. With all the positive momentum the Lady Raiders had gained in the last two weeks, the hope was LR would win and seal up secon...
Raider cross country came home from the Central Washington B League race at Liberty Bell with a second-place finish for the girls’ squad and a third-place for the boys. The Raiders’ times were not as good as they were two weeks ago, but, Head Coach Gary Darnold said, “It was a pretty demanding course and all worked their hardest on it.” “With a fairly tough week of training, I expected them not to necessarily have their best races as we prepare for district and regionals,” the coach noted. He p...
With the victory over the Manson Trojans last Tuesday, LR moved into second place for the North Central B League. The Lady Raiders now have a four-win, two-loss record in league play and are 7-6 overall. The momentum from the night before carried over for the Lady Raiders, who defeated Manson in straight sets to the joy of Head Coach Nate Piturachsatit. “The girls are on a roll, playing very confident” he said, “and they are definitely working as a team.” In the previous meeting between the Trojans and the Lady Raiders, Manson came out on top...
The Raiders lost to Liberty Bell 12-6 last Friday at Liberty Bell. The Mt. Lions’ homecoming victory keeps them in the hunt for a playoff spot, making their game against White Swan the decider for who takes the numbers two and three spots for playoffs. At the same time, the loss at Liberty Bell crushed any chance of the Raiders going to state playoffs. “Our defense played their best game of the year, by far,” Raider Head Coach Steve Files said. “We competed hard and made Liberty Bell work for every yard.” The Raider defense, according...
Last week was the busiest for the Lady Raiders this season. They played five matches, including victories at Oroville and Entiat and a home win against Oroville. LR played one at home against Bridgeport last Thursday, Monday with Oroville to finish the season series, and again at home last night against Manson. The Lady Raiders came away with three wins over the course of the week. At Oroville Oct. 9, Taima Carden delivered an impressive serving streak of nine points, giving LR the offensive spark it needed to beat the Hornets. Oroville...
The Raiders were outplayed Friday by the Oroville Hornets in Oroville, losing 45-19. The loss dropped Lake Roosevelt to one win, two losses in league play and 1-6 overall. This was the fifth loss in which the Raiders were outscored by more than 25 points. The Raiders started slow and did not get into gear until the second quarter, but by that time Oroville had amassed a good lead and the Raiders could not get back into the game. The Raider defense was attacked in a different way than the...
The Raiders sent only eight runners to Oroville, Saturday, where five Lake Roosevelt boys and three girls held their own as they view the post season in the near future. That number of boys put the team at the minimum to run as a varsity squad, while the girls all ran as individuals. This did not hamper the runners as all present continued to hold their own, either improving on or maintaining their times from last week. This is where the Raiders want to be as the postseason looms on the horizon. Lukas Hermetz continues to lead the Raider boys,...
The Raiders recorded their first victory of the 2012 season in Friday night’s homecoming win over the Manson Trojans, 45-27. With the win, the Raiders are tied with White Swan for fourth in the Central Washington 2B League with a one-win, one-loss league record. Manson did not roll over for the Raiders. They returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and gained the lead three times in the first half. Led by a speedy running back and a solid quarterback, the Trojans stayed with the Raiders a...
