  • Senior and music trips OK'd

    A trip by the senior class at Lake Roosevelt High School to San Francisco was approved the the school board May 23. The trip had been outlined to the board earlier, but approval was held up pending completion of paperwork. The board learned that 25 seniors have signed up for the trip and will take off for California on Sunday, May 29, along with five adults who will be accompanying this year’s senior class. The seniors and adult chaperones will leave by school bus at 3:30 a.m., Sunday to go to Seattle, where they will catch a flight to San Jose... Full story

  • Discus thrower moves on

    Nathan Morrell has qualified to compete in the 2016 State Track & Field Championships at Eastern Washington University this Saturday. The Lake Roosevelt discus thrower was the only Raider who qualified out of the five that had an opportunity to move on at the district competition in Ephrata Saturday. Morrell placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 103 feet, 6 inches.   • Tennis ends season at district

    The Raider tennis doubles team of Jordan Charles and John Drapela traveled to Omak last weekend to try to make it to the state tournament, falling short of that goal by one match. In the first match of the day, Charles and Drapela faced the district tournament’s top seed from Chelan. They tried hard but fell short by the match scores of 6-3, 6-3. In their first consolation match, the team faced Flodin and Brulotte from Cascade. After losing the first set, Charles and Drapela forged ahead to take the victory 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.   • Golfers' season ends at district

    Raider golfers ended their season at the district tournament last week at the Alta Lake Golf Course outside of Pateros. “I was very pleased with how our young team handled themselves at this year’s district tournament,” Head Coach Steve Files said. “This was the first go-round for all but one of our players. … This tournament is always a step up in pressure and competition, and Alta Lake is a dangerous course.” Raider Golf had also traveled to Alta Lake on May 13 against Okanogan.   • City contract with chamber signed and working

    The chamber of commerce has signed a contract with Electric City for use of the city’s hotel/motel tax dollars for 2016. The contract is for nearly $27,000, to cover qualified promotional expenses for the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce to advertise various festivals in the area. The contract had been issued early in the year and returned in April, but with its language altered in a bid to loosen up restrictions on the use of the money.     The chamber of commerce’s 2016 contract with Electric City, good for nearly $27,000 for advertising use, was voided last Tuesday night by city council members because the wording of the contract returned to the city in April had been altered. The city is sending out the original contract again this week. If it isn’t signed and returned, the hotel/motel funds will continue to remain with the city.     About 40 people showed up Saturday at the Vet's Center to hear and take part in discussions about the revitalization of Electric City. The meeting, the first of two scheduled, was to get input on what residents would like to see in the future for the city.   • Free fresh food coming Tuesday

    The Mobile Food Bank of 2nd Harvest will distribute free produce, nutritious perishable products and other groceries for families in need at Zion Lutheran Church, Tuesday, May 24 from 10 a.m. to noon. Last year’s 2nd Harvest visit distributed 7,230 pounds of vegetables and perishable foods, and officials here said that about 10,000 pounds of free food should be available this year.     All of the incumbents who filed for re-election in the Colville Tribal Business Council primary election last week made it into the general election, scheduled for June 17. Only one councilmember up for election, Nancy Johnson, for the Nespelem District Position 2 seat, did not file.   • A theme cropped up in hearing on change in juvenile facilities

    On May 10, a public meeting was held in Okanogan involving a possible change on where our troubled juveniles would be housed over a period of time. The three Okanogan County commissioners were there, also three commissioners from other counties who gave a presentation on their experiences with Martin Hall, a private, not-for-profit group who handles juvenile offenders from nine counties.     Lake Roosevelt’s baseball and softball teams had several members named to the Central Washington 2B North All League squads last week. Khani Priest was named to the First Team softball squad. Priest was a big part of the Lady Raiders’ turnaround season. Sean Garvin was named to the second team. Garvin will be a big part of the Lady Raiders’ future as the team looks to build on the success from this season.   • Bulldogs end Raiders' postseason

    Raider baseball’s season came to an end Saturday at Moses Lake as the Okanogan Bulldogs defeated the Raiders 6-0. LR had to win to stay alive in the postseason. It was the furthest the Raiders have gone in the postseason since the 2011 state tournament appearance. The 2016 season was Lake Roosevelt’s the seventh straight winning season.     Raider Tennis took part in the Central Washington B League Tennis Tournament in Omak at the North Cascades Athletic Club last Friday and Saturday. The results from the matches determined both who would advance to the district tournament against the Caribou Trail League schools and for whom the season would be over. Lake Roosevelt’s doubles team of Jordan Charles and John Drapela will advance to districts as a number-four seed.     Five members of the Raider boys’ track team qualified from the sub-district competition May 11 to this Saturday’s district meet in Ephrata. At the sub-district level last week at Oroville, the Okanogan Bulldogs won both the boys’ and girls’ titles. For the Raiders, Nathaniel Hall advanced in the 100-meter dash, finishing fourth with a personal-record time of 11.71 seconds.     A sale of used items on the sidewalk outside of Harvest Foods and Variety in Coulee Dam today (Saturday) has drawn huge support from contributors. The sale is to give support to the family of Justin Arnold in their efforts to bring him closer to home from a New York care facility. Arnold suffered a critical brain injury when he was struck by a car in New York, where he was pursuing his education as a chef. Transporting him across the country will require a special flight.   • Promoters say new hydropower project could employ thousands

    The Regional Board of Mayors learned Monday of a proposed Banks Lake Pumped Storage Project that could employ 2,500 people during construction and end up providing permanent employment for 150-200 workers. Columbia Basin Hydropower managers told the mayors that the project could run as high as $1 billion and take several years to complete. The target date for completion would be 2025, representatives stated.     A man involved in many local causes who helped with the sound system heard at Saturday’s parade died driving his Harley later that night just east of Grand Coulee. Walter H. Nuehring, known locally as Steve Nuehring, was riding his white 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle toward Wilbur on highway 174 at milepost 23 when he left the road to the right, then tried to correct it and rolled the bike, the Washington State Patrol reported.   • Young driver dies in accident

    A young driver died as a result of a single-car accident 10 miles north of Nespelem Sunday afternoon. The Washington State Patrol said the car, driven by Thomas C. Jacobs, 17, Tonasket, was going too fast for road conditions in the area. The driver was taken to Coulee Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The WSP said the 1996 Honda Civic was southbound about 3:17 p.m. on highway 155 near milepost 55, when the driver failed to negotiate a curve, lost control and struck a tree.... Full story

    The Colorama Pro-West Rodeo was a great success, according to Ridge Riders President George Kohout. "I think it was one of the best rodeos we have had here for a long time," Kohout said early this week.   • Report: 701 tons of garbage produced

    Grand Coulee won hands down the blue ribbon for producing the highest tonnage of garbage for 2015, a Sunrise Disposal report to the Regional Board of Mayors indicated. The disposal company reported that it picked up 700.77 tons of garbage in Grand Coulee last year. Coulee Dam was a close second, with Electric City third and Elmer City fourth. The four municipalities together operate the Delano Transfer station through the RBOM. Sunrise presented their report at Monday’s meeting of the mayors.
