  • Raider tennis shuffles dates

    John R McNeil II|Apr 20, 2016

Tonasket defeated both the Raider boys’ and girls’ tennis squads Thursday, after shuffling schedules to accomodate the weather. A White Swan match that had been scheduled for April 15 has been moved to the 29th, so that LR could travel instead to Tonasket to the makeup match last week. At Tonasket, Lake Roosevelt did win a boys’ doubles match in which John Drapela and Jordan Charles “played very well and dominated their second set for the win,” according to Head Coach Steve Archer. He also praised the girls’ doubles team of Savannah Ho...

He replaces Paul Turner who will become superintendent of the Grand Coulee Dam School District July 1. Herndon has been in his present position for three years. Before that he was assistant principal at Neah Bay, where he also taught shop and scie...

  • Spaghetti feed this Saturday helps kids come together

    Scott Hunter|Apr 13, 2016

A spaghetti dinner set for Saturday will help fund a project that brings together sixth graders from Coulee Dam and Nespelem schools to pave their way as eventual classmates in high school. The Grand Coulee Dam Rotary Club chose to work with the sixth graders for the annual fund raiser, possibly instilling an early lesson in community service. The sixth-graders help by serving at the dinner, giving them experience in working in volunteer community service and working with the public. And the...

  • Gary Payton basketball workshop aims to inspire

    Jacob Wagner|Apr 13, 2016

NBA hall-of-famer Gary Payton came to the area Thursday to host a basketball workshop entitled "Rise Above." About 200 boys and girls of all ages had a blast performing basketball drills, playing games, and listening to Payton speak. Payton's message was simple and strong: "Be a pro at being you. ... You have to have a goal in life. ... You can do whatever you want with your life. ... Grow up to be that person that you know you can be," Payton said to a gym full of kids, all wearing "Rise...

  • Long named center's "volunteer of the year"

    Scott Hunter|Apr 13, 2016

Charlie Long was honored as the Grand Coulee Dam Senior Center's volunteer of the year at a dinner there Saturday. "If anyone deserves recognition, it is Charlie," Way and Means Committee Chairman Maggie Stewart said, reading a nomination letter. "So much of what he does is behind the scenes, helping Darla (Orr) and others without anyone even knowing he makes himself available for so many things." Long said the award took him by surprise, saying that all the real work is done by others. But the...

  • Proctor school bringing up bull riders

    Roger S Lucas|Apr 13, 2016

Shane Proctor remembers his roots. He returned to the Grand Coulee area last week to put on his seventh annual bull riding clinic at the Nespelem rodeo grounds. He brought along two of his sidekicks from the professional bull riding circuit, one of them a graduate of his Nespelem clinic. Putting on the clinic along with Proctor were Gustin Patton from Australia and Derek Kulbaba from Walla Walla. Kulbaba is a graduate of Proctor's "school of hard knocks," having attended four years at the...

    Roger S Lucas|Apr 13, 2016

National Park Service officials reported to police that someone had prowled a vehicle and took a purse with two credit cards inside, which they later tried to use at the Safeway store in Grand Coulee. The vehicle prowl occurred within the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area. When a woman, who was wearing a green camouflaged jacket and a pink Seahawks cap, tried to use one of the cards, the transaction was rejected. However, when she used the second card, the transaction went through, and was caught on camera. In that transaction, the woman...

  • Puzzling: Okanogan County considering outsourcing juvenile detention

    Scott Hunter|Apr 13, 2016

Citizens would do well to continue their skepticism regarding a curious study underway by Okanogan County commissioners on whether to ship out to other locations juvenile offenders in its justice system, rather than house them in county. The advantages of doing so are anything but clear, at least based on documents The Star requested that outline a cost study already completed. If shipped to Martin Hall, a privately run facility in Medical Lake under consideration, the annual extra cost would easily clear a quarter of a million dollars, not...

  • Re: "Raising funds for a solid memory" 3-30-16 Star

    Connie Babler|Apr 13, 2016

I would like to respond to the Grand Coulee alumni group fund raising article that appeared in The Star newspaper March 30, 2016, and thank them for getting this fund raising started. I want to correct the information of only three high schools being involved; there were actually four high schools. When the Grand Coulee Dam was started in 1932-33, there were four main towns in the area, including the city of Grand Coulee, with the Grand Coulee High School Tigers, and the town of Coulee Dam, which was originally only on the west side of the...

  • Gumshoe reporter meets favorite athlete

    Jacob Wagner|Apr 13, 2016

Growing up in the 1990s, I loved the Seattle Sonics and used to shoot hoops at home in the woods, on a dirt road near a hill. Sometimes I’d miss my shot and the ball would go rolling far down the hill and I’d chase after it. I’d pretend I was making game-winning, buzzer-beating, 3-point shots for the Sonics to win the NBA Championship. My favorite player was Gary Payton. When I got the assignment to cover the recent Gary Payton event, my eyes lit up. I was very nervous, but once I got there I felt fine. So I stood on the sidelines of the gym,...

  • Local enforcement for local lands

    Dan Newhouse Congressman|Apr 13, 2016

It may be news to many Americans, but as individual land owners, ranchers, and farmers in Washington already know, the federal government is one of the largest property managers in the nation, and especially in the West. According to a 2014 government survey, federal agencies manage 640 million acres of land, or one million square miles nationwide. That number accounts for 28 percent of land in the country. To put that enormous number in further perspective, it is just a bit smaller than the size of the land area of the three largest states,...

  • Clinic draws participants from across state

    Scott Hunter|Apr 13, 2016

From far and near, 23 young riders attended The Ridge Riders Saddle Club's barrel racing clinic last week. Taught by Jackie Jackson-Gudmundson, the clinic brought students from as far away as Snohomish, Washington, who wanted to learn from a champion in the popular rodeo event. Handing out certificates and prizes, and commenting on each student's attributes at the close of the clinic April 5, Jackson-Gudmundson, now of Monroe, had each participant sign a promise as to how they will conduct...

  • Raider baseball splits double-header with Brewster Bears

    John R McNeil II|Apr 13, 2016

The Raiders split a doubleheader against the number-one team in the Central Washington 2B North April 5. With their first win over the Brewster Bears in several years, The Raiders now sport a 7-1 overall win-loss record, 3-1 in CWL North play. Lake Roosevelt held the Bears, in Brewster, to just one run in the first game while the Raider offense scored five, with three Raider runs coming in the first inning. "Tyrell Kiser pitched well," noted Coach Billy Nicholson, who also praised Kiser's play...

  • His time in the barrel is not easy

    Roger S Lucas|Apr 13, 2016

There will be a new clown in town for Colorama. You'll see him get rolled and tossed by bulls weighing up to a ton at the Ridge Riders Colorama Rodeo. Scott Wagner, who has his own way of getting thrills, will be out in the arena taking the heat off the bull riders May 6 – 7. Ridge Riders President George Kohout said last week that Wagner joins a host of rodeo specialists this year, the 60th year of the rodeo event. Wagner has 15 rodeo events scheduled this year and said last week that he is e...

  • City to ask citizens about parks and trails

    Roger S Lucas|Apr 6, 2016

Residents of Electric City could receive a Parks and Trails Survey as early as this week. The survey asks more than 20 questions about how residents view their city and what their needs are for the future. The survey came out of a community meeting held Jan. 20, at Coulee Medical Center, and is tied to Electric City’s plan to put in a pathway and trail system using tourism-dedicated lodging tax funds to do so. The survey was developed by Grant County Health District and was provided to Electric City’s Parks and Pathway Advisory Committee for...

  • Police arrest suspect after chase

    Roger S Lucas|Apr 6, 2016

A Lake Stevens man led Grand Coulee police officers on a chase and withstood getting hit with tasers at least four times Monday morning before finally being subdued. Arrested and taken to Grant County jail Monday was Kyle A. Simpson, 26, who had allegedly taken a number of clothing items from the Variety Store without paying for them. Police were called and found Simpson near the trailhead at SR-155 and Federal Avenue. Police Chief John Tufts instructed Simpson to stop, but he wouldn't. When...

    Roger S Lucas|Apr 6, 2016

A local man wanted in the burglary of his grandparent’s house was found in a house on Burdin Boulevard and arrested, police reported. Michael S. Snyder II, 26, was taken to Grant County Jail on April 1. In addition to the burglary charge, Snyder faces the additional charges of trying to escape and resisting arrest. Police said they’d been looking for Snyder after identifying him as the person who broke into the home of Milton Snyder, his grandfather, on Miller Avenue in Electric City, March 7, and on another occasion the same month. Police had...

  • Coulee Dam surveying people on its parks

    Roger S Lucas|Apr 6, 2016

You still have a couple of days before your Coulee Dam park survey is due. The town of Coulee Dam is taking a comprehensive park survey to determine the use of its parks and how and where the community would like to see improvements. The survey is due at town hall on April 8, and if you don’t have a copy of the survey, there’s still time to get one and participate in it. Copies are available at town hall. The survey is primarily for local residents, but outsiders are encouraged to fill out the survey, too. Town Councilmember Gayle Swagerty, alo...

  • New volunteer to head up fish pen project

    Roger S Lucas|Apr 6, 2016

POWER has a new fish pens manager in Electric City. Bill Hancock, who lives near the fish pens, volunteered to handle those duties at the annual meeting of the group March 24 at the Grand Coulee Dam Senior Center. The future of the fish pens was in doubt going into the meeting, with POWER President Carl Russell indicating that he planned to step down after 25 years. As it turned out, Russell agreed to continue as president if someone else managed the fish pen operation. That’s when Hancock stepped forward. In the election that followed, t...

  • Security cameras installed at golf course

    Roger S Lucas|Apr 6, 2016

Thieves should think twice about breaking into the Banks Lake Golf Course office. Grant County Port District 7, which manages the course, has installed 10 security cameras. Commissioner Jerry Sands, who installed the security cameras, said that there are five outside and five inside. "We don't want any more damage or loss at the office," he stated as Grant County port district commissioners met last Thursday. The golf course had two burglaries back in 2013. The first happened in January, when...

The grand prize for this year’s chamber of commerce fourth annual Triple Fish Challenge, fittingly, is something that will make fishing easier for the winner. The Triple Fish Challenge is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, April 23 and 24, at Coulee Playland Resort on Banks Lake, in Electric City. The grand prize is an Achilles four-person inflatable boat and Yamaha outboard motor. • We should be thinking about root causes

    Scott Hunter|Apr 6, 2016

While law abiding citizens often find it frustrating to learn that those accused of crimes against them are arrested but very soon released, that doesn’t mean the system doesn’t work. Sometimes it just means it’s slower than we might like, certainly. But in America, the scales of justice are not fixed for a certain outcome. The police often have an uphill battle to gather the burden of proof of wrongdoing. And if you know that’s the guy who stole from you, watching him walk can be infuriating. But neither individuals nor the justice system...

  • Reader thankful for those who step up

    Vicki Ratcliff|Apr 6, 2016

I would like to say thank you to officer John Tufts, the Grand Coulee EMTs and the staff at Coulee Medical Center for their outstanding care for my mom, Bobbi, during her distress. I am so thankful to live in an area where people really step up and show their true care. We need to remember to thank them for their service to our community. So to you I say, thank you and God Bless you for your service! Your friend, Vicki Ratcliff...

  • Cost of Boeing airplanes at heart of job cuts

    Don Brunell|Apr 6, 2016

Boeing’s new cost-reduction plan has deep ramifications for Washington because the bulk of the 4,500 job cuts are likely to land here. CEO Dennis Muilenburg asked investors to view the savings initiative as “playing offense in a competitive marketplace” even though Boeing has a $431 billion backlog of 5,800 aircraft orders. Translated, Muilenburg means the aerospace giant needs to find ways to lower the price tag of its airplanes. Boeing leaders worry because Airbus’ A320 scooped up 63% of the...
