For several weeks we’ve read comments by John Adkins, who serves as Superintendent of Wellpinit schools, although he focuses at the local school scene. We know that students at Wellpinit are accomplishing noteworthy studies, and we’d like to know what Adkins thinks about the Spokane Tribal Community. A longtime Elder from the Reservation was recognized for her Life’s work. A new school in Spokane was named Pauline Pascal Flett School for Pauline’s initiation of means to retain the Spokane Salish Language. All levels of Wellpinit student...
A week ago, I was recovering from knee replacement at Lincoln County Transitional Care Center in Davenport. The procedure had been done at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane. I experienced a reaction with unexpected outcomes that delayed my return home, so it was great to finally leave Davenport for my home of 30 years in Coulee Dam. I was only home a short while as I traveled regularly to Spokane to consult with my orthopaedist. I had no idea what was about to happen last week. Much of my time since coming home has been spent either resting or d... Full story
Houseboats at Keller Ferry and abandoned mills near Omak serve as grim reminders of Colville tribal council’s record of inept spending and intuitive planning. I am not optimistic that council’s approach will maximize use of settlement monies, not during my lifetime, despite observations and opinions of Yvette Joseph et. al. Tribal supported programs have served to justify use of contracted and tribal funds but lasting outcomes are questionable. In fact, a lot of intuitive planning eliminates outcome focus and stresses process. Program sta... Full story
Now that Colville tribal members have received a total of 50 percent of settlement monie$ I am stoked. I prefer to have this money in my account than in the tribal council’s pork barrel. I believe that many other senior tribal members feel as I do since the miss-spending and bad intuitive investments have been going on for so many years. I prefer to manage funds which I am entitled to and I do not need tribal council oversight. It looks like a great day. R.C. Covington... Full story
Last Friday morning I had an appointment at the new clinic to have my hip replacement dressing (and sutures) removed. This simple procedure should have taken no longer than 15 minutes, but it actually involved over an hour in the waiting room alone. There were few patients when I checked in, and I advised the support staff that I couldn't sit or stand too long. Things then went awry as my wait extended to over 50 minutes. Other patients came in and were called ahead of me. My pain meds were wearing off, and I was very uncomfortable. My wife... Full story
I would like to see pride signs at arterials entering the Coulee Community which honor recently crowned PRCA World Champion Bullrider Shane Proctor. Such a sign could include Shane astride a known high-point bull he has ridden successfully. The sign might simply read “Home of 2012 PRCA World Champion Bull Rider Shane Proctor.” A similar sign was recently placed in Oklahoma for the “Cherokee Kid,” Ryan Dirteater, whose career just resumed following injury. Let’s do it, bullriding fans. I’m ready to donate money to such a timely project tha... Full story
I’m a resident of Coulee Dam, and I’m all for justification of any project which is initiated on my behalf and which will inflate my monthly utility (sewage) bill. Without a super influx of new residents, a super sewage plant doesn’t seem practical. I fully support Gregory Wilder’s pursuit of justification for actions which seem to invalidate the residents of Coulee Dam. Ricky Gabriel's comment regarding this seemingly frivolous sewage project are incongruent with constituent interests, in my opinion. He doesn't base what appears to be advocacy... Full story
