    Area seniors are trying to get their "manor" back. A local apartment complex once reserved for senior citizens no longer is, and some people don't appreciate the change in the neighborhood.     Look for a “pig out” for the park this Saturday. The event will raise money for Electric City’s new park behind the fire station. But the community barbecue will happen behind city hall so those preparing the food will have access to power and other needs.   • Guild's shoe collection still going

    Collecting shoes for developing countries will continue through the end of this month, Coulee Medical Center Guild president Clea Pryor said this week. The Guild has been collecting donated shoes since early July, with a goal of getting 100 bags of shoes. They had about 82 bags of shoes as of Tuesday, stored in a room in the basement of Coulee Medical Center's professional building.   • Donors arrange for pizza for firefighters

    A number of local donors, both individuals and businesses, purchased over 100 large pizzas and delivered them to firefighters on the Colville Indian Reservation Friday and Monday. Tim Whittaker, who took charge of the deliveries, loaded 51 pizzas in his vehicle Friday and delivered them to the agency grounds and then made a repeat trip on Monday with a like number.   • Two districts delay school for a week

    Grand Coulee Dam School District Superintendent Dennis Carlson announced Wednesday that both he and Nespelem School District Superintendent Rich Stewart agreed to delay the opening of their respective schools until Sept. 8. Both schools had been scheduled to begin Sept. 1, but with the problem of wildfires and smoke, they decided on the delay. In Nespelem, Sept. 8 will actually be a training day for teachers, not a school day for students.   • District to seek lower county appraisal of school

    The Grand Coulee Dam School District is going to try to make it easier for parties to take another look at purchasing Center School and its adjacent property. The district had advertised for bids earlier this summer for the vacated elementary school sitting on about 8.3 acres of property. No one submitted a bid.   • City considers vacating tiny land strips

    The city of Grand Coulee will hold a public hearing to receive any comments from citizens on declaring surplus small strips of land on both the east and west sides of Main Street between Spokane Way and Midway Avenue at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15. City Clerk Carol Boyce stated the problem occurred “ages ago” and the strips of land are so small that they are unusable by the city.   • District contracts for nursing at school

    The Grand Coulee Dam School District is contracting with Coulee Medical Center to provide supervisory nursing services for the new school complex in Coulee Dam. The school board approved a measure that will provide two days of on-site registered nurse care at the schools, and also provide consultation when needed. The school also has two practical nurses who provide care, one at each school, five days a week.   • Raider sculpture dedication set

    The new Raider sculpture at the new educational complex in Coulee Dam will be officially dedicated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, the opening day of school. The 7-foot-tall metal sculpture has been at the front of the Lake Roosevelt Schools complex for a couple of months, as if to welcome all those who enter the grounds.     Grand Coulee’s city council last week approved a $375,000 settlement with long-time police officer Sean Cook, who filed suit last fall, claiming the city had not provided public records he had requested, violating the state’s Public Records Act.     Grand Coulee police are investigating a Monday-night burglary at Sunbanks Lake Resort. A clerk, Debbie Rimel, noticed the burglary early Tuesday morning when she arrived at work and started to make coffee. She told police that she noticed a container holding golf balls was ajar, and that the wrong key was in the cash register. When she got into the register, she noticed that two cash bags had been cleaned out. Each had held $200.   • Bowlers can retrieve items from closed alley

    The town of Coulee Dam has scheduled three nights this week when bowlers can go to Riverview Lanes and retrieve articles left there. Town Clerk Stefani Bowman said the bowling alley, which has been closed, will be open from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights, Aug. 26-28. “People can come in and sign for their articles during those dates,” Bowman stated. The new "Discover Your Northwest" bookstore is located just within the lobby of the Visitor Center and is there under special arrangements with the National Park Service and the Bureau of Reclamation.   • School buildings being readied for fire uses

    Grand Coulee Dam school personnel have offered their buildings for use by firefighters and other fire needs. Superintendent Dennis Carlson said Tuesday that there is an 80 percent chance that the opening of school will be delayed until Sept. 8, due to the fires. He said a final decision will be made Thursday. Both the Grand Coulee Dam and Nespelem school districts postponed their board meetings Monday night for a week.     The National Park Service here has landed a traveling quilt show for July 1-4, 2016, as part of a celebration of its 100th anniversary. Administrative Officer Janet Valen at the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area said the traveling exhibit has 177 quilts depicting the flora, fauna and landscape of the country’s 59 major national parks. Quilts depict subject matter from Arcadia to the U.S. Virgin Islands, from Gates of the Arctic to American Samoa and others in between.   • Delano fire started intentionally

    Investigators have talked with "people of interest" in regard to two fires set by humans Thursday on Alcan Road between the Delano Transfer Station and SR-155. Grand Coulee, Electric City, and USBR firefighters, along with Grand Coulee police, responded. The fires, burning only about one-tenth of an acre, were quickly extinguished.     Fireworks for next year’s Festival of America have already been assured, Coulee Dam’s town council learned last Wednesday night. Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Peggy Nevsimal told council members that a corporate sponsor has already pledged $10,000 toward the 2016 show. Nevsimal appeared before the council for a debriefing of this year’s festival to see what might be done to make it even more successful.     The town of Coulee Dam is going to hire a code enforcer. The council gave its approval last Tuesday night, at least to try out the idea for the rest of this calendar year. The council approved a plan by the mayor to hire a code enforcer for 25 hours a month at $22 an hour, but stopped short of making it a permanent position. The town council took up the enforcement issue just prior to voting down a chicken ordinance that would have allowed residents to keep up to four hens.     Electric City will hold a “Pig for the Park” barbecue on Sept. 12. The barbecue will get Electric City residents familiar with the city’s new neighborhood park on land purchased from the Banks Lake Bible Church.   • Man jailed on charge of false 911 calls

    A veteran living in a Housing Authority of Grant County apartment in Continental Heights was arrested last Tuesday and taken to county jail for abusing the 911 line. Tommy Hawkins had dialed 911, a police report states, to complain that he had to get to the hospital, but he was stuck by the dumpster that was in the way of his wheelchair ramp. When police called back, Hawkins told the officer, “I’m halfway in my door, stop calling me.” Police told him at the time, about 11:27 a.m., that they would see that the dumpster was moved.   • Report: big marijuana grow busted near Keller

    A combination of law enforcement agencies reportedly seized a marijuana grow near Keller with an $8.5 million street value August 12. A story in the Tribal Tribune stated that tribal police, the Northwest Drug Task Force, U.S. Border Patrol, Tribal Natural Resources Enforcement and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, all participated in the raid.     The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has delegated authority to enforce federal laws on its lands within the exterior boundary of the Colville Reservation to certified Colville Tribal Police officers, the USBR announced last Wednesday.
