  • Oppose Dollar General

    Wiyaka Steinke|Nov 23, 2022

I agree with Janis Heuvel’s letter to the editor from Nov.16th concerning Dollar General. I feel it would be detrimental to our community and especially our local businesses to allow a Dollar General to come to our area. It would essentially put the Coulee Wall Variety Store and the local residents who own and operate it out of business. There would also be a negative impact to our grocery stores, Coulee Hardware, and even take business away from our gas stations for convenience items. If anyone local cares to shop at one, they are now as c...

  • The Star needs to rethink

    Kurt Steinke|Sep 21, 2022

A well-deserved thank you to Carl Russell’s article last week. I am so glad someone finally stepped up and made the paper realize how bias it is with their week after weekstupid jabs at Trump and the Republicans. I thought that we as Americans have theright to vote and follow any party we want. Being a Democrat or Republican is one thing, but still attacking Trump is another. Get over it! This newspaper should remain neutral and give insight to what is happening with all parties, and as Carl Russellmentioned, it is not like that, and the S...

  • Re: "Popular beach at Steamboat Rock closing permanently" (Star Jan. 27, 2021)

    Kurt Steinke|Feb 17, 2021

In response to the shocking news about the sandy beach area at Steamboat Rock State Park being permanently closed due to a government mystery: oh Ya and EROSION, I’m thinking why stop there? Shut the entire Banks Lake and Lake Roosevelt down. Certainly, the rise and fall of water levels and tourist enjoyment has and will cause more erosion. If that’s the case, then I also feel I’m in danger while driving through the Coulee Walls and beside any natural hillside or formation caused by erosion. I hate to be the bearer of bad news people, but t...

  • Re: "Colville Business Council approves controversial horse removal contract" 1-30-19

    Wiyaka Steinke|Feb 6, 2019

Thank you for the update on the Colville Business Council’s Jan. 24th decision to send over a thousand majestic wild horses to slaughter in direct violation of their own Tribal Code Chapter 4.14. It appears to me to have been a rushed decision without allowing enough input from the tribal membership and experts’ views. It sickens my heart to think of the helicopters breaking up the highly structured social and emotional groups among the wild horses, not to mention threatening the genetic viability of the herds. The fact that they will ine...

  • Speed limit change should be temporary

    Wiyaka Steinke|Mar 15, 2017

I had to chuckle at Scott’s editorial about the speed limit change above the dam, as I too had done the mental calculations! After driving 40 mph through that stretch for 16 years, it’s apparently made its way into my DNA as I catch myself on a daily basis still driving 40 and having to slow myself down. I understand changing the limit during construction of the new fire station, but after completion, my personal feelings are that the limit should be raised again, as I know most law-abiding Americans already know to slow down and pull over whe... Full story

  • And we'll miss her, too

    Steinke|Oct 21, 2015

The closing of the Fusion Café comes as an unfortunate loss to the community and to myself as well. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the customers I have had the privilege and honor of serving in my job as waitress these past seven years. Thank you for your kindness and generosity. I appreciate all of you for being part my life and would like you to know you will be missed. Thank you for touching my life. With heartfelt thanks, Wiyaka Steinke... Full story

  • Citizens of Electric City should make their voices heard

    Wiyaka Steinke|Dec 31, 2014

If you are considering putting up a fence, accessory structure, shop or garage (in Electric City), now is your chance to be heard. The ordinances are changing! There will be a public meeting at 3 p.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at the Electric City Hall. Please come to this important meeting (even though its time is totally inconvenient for most of us who work) and let your voices be heard. Wiyaka Steinke... Full story
