    Jacob Wagner|Jan 2, 2019

Be careful driving out there on those snowy days. In Eastern Washington, on the snowy day after Christmas, state troopers responded to 40 crashes in District 4 and to 43 in District 6. Those included two crashes just northwest of Grand Coulee, where local police had to scramble to get out of the way of an oncoming skidding vehicle. The Washington State Patrol's District 4 includes Adams, Ferry, Lincoln, Pend Oreille, Spokane, Stevens and Whitman counties. District 6 includes Douglas, Grant,...

The athletic director for the Grand Coulee Dam School District got a $4,000 annual boost in pay, and a 6-percent raise for non-union classified staffers is also coming following a vote by the school board Dec. 20. But not without questions and discussion that shed light on hard decision that may be coming. Superintendent Paul Turner told the board that Athletic Director Tim Rasmussen is "really doing a bang-up job," and Turner wants him to do more. Rasmussen teaches four classes of physical...

  • Ensuring a much cozier near future

    Jan 2, 2019

Nine people rush past icy puddles down the beach at Spring Canyon 12 hours into 2019 to take a “Coulee Polar Plunge” into Lake Roosevelt. The air temperature was about 33° F. The water temperature measured 42° with a thermometer brought by one of the plungers, but it definitely did not feel warmer. Five sane people, plus two photographers, and a Portuguese water dog also witnessed the “second annual” event, which nearly doubled in size this year. The dog remained dry. From the left, plungers...

  • Valid points overshadowed by unnecessary rhetoric

    Jan 2, 2019

After reading the letter written by former Coulee Dam Mayor Wilder, I felt compelled to address what appears to be nothing more than a self-congratulatory essay and an attempt to criticize those who didn’t vote the same way he did. First, I want to make it very clear that I am in no way defending Larry Price. The accusations against him should be taken very seriously and subsequently investigated and dealt with by the proper authorities. I also want to make it clear that I am not criticizing Gayle Swagerty as a mayoral candidate or anything t...

  • Ways to drain the swamp

    Jan 2, 2019

Many pundits predict American political warfare will worsen in 2019 and grow more ruthless in 2020 our next presidential election year. The swamp that candidate Donald Trump promised to drain is expanding. James Astill, Washington bureau chief for The Economist, wrote: As America approached the mid-point of President Donald Trumps first term, sober commentators suggested it had not been so divided since the 1850s. Political disagreement is the heart of Americas way of governing. Diversity of opinion makes our country strong as long as those...

  • Welcome 2019 in with prayer

    Jesse Utz|Jan 2, 2019

It seems hard to believe that the actual year is 2019. Just under a year and we will be looking at 2020. When I was a kid I thought for sure we would have floating cars by now and kitchens that made us whatever we could think up, but we still need to cook for ourselves and we still need to dodge potholes as we drive to work. But this year as we move ahead and look to the new year, I am looking forward to the blessings that will be bestowed upon the entire area. I am praying for healing for you....

    Dan Newhouse|Jan 2, 2019

As 2018 comes to a close, so does the 115th Congress. It is an honor to represent the diverse interests of the Fourth Congressional District, and I am especially proud of the accomplishments we achieved that will improve the quality of life in Central Washington. One year after Congress passed historic tax relief for American taxpayers, we are seeing results in the form of higher paychecks, improved employee benefits, and growing small businesses.
