    The state of Washington ranks second in the nation in National Board Certified teachers a report for 2012 stated last week. Washington remains a national leader in both the number of new National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) and the total number teaching in the state’s schools. The Grand Coulee Dam School District currently has four NBCTs, two in Center Elementary and two in Lake Roosevelt High School.     The Grand Coulee Dam Middle School held its 2013 National Geographic Society Bee Jan. 10. Linda Morgan moderated the bee. Participants Kevin Brown, Reese Caddy, Malcolm Carson, Casey Cleveland, Aidan Derr, Alan Nordine, and Bradley Wilder went through many preliminary rounds to determine who would make it to the final rounds.     Reviewing data sets for December 2011 and 2012 shows we were a bit warmer and wetter. Our low for December 2012 was 21.9°F compared to 2011, which was 16.4°F. That’s a 5.5 degree difference. The all-time low temperature for December was a minus 16°F in 1968, while the mean low is 29.6°F. Precipitation shows a difference of 1.63 inches. We measured 2.12 inches for 2012, while in 2011 we received only 0.49 inches. Snow accumulation for December 2012 was 6.4 inches and in 2011 just 1.3 inches. For...

    Grand Coulee Police 1/8 - Police confronted a driver whose car was stuck in a snow berm on Martin Road and learned that her license had been suspended. She had been trying to drive to Spokane to pay her fines so she could get her license back, she said.     The Colville Tribal Court of Appeals will hear arguments at Gonzaga University School of Law’s Barbieri Courtroom, at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 25. The hearing, which is open to the public, is part of Gonzaga Law School’s centennial celebration.
