Police are looking for information about a local woman who hasn’t been seen nor heard from since Jan. 8. Jamie Marie Breckenridge, 42, of Grand Coulee, was last seen at Tim’s 4 Corner Union 76, her family says. They pasted posters around town on Thursday, hoping to elicit clues. Her mother, Carol Ann Estrada, of Elmer City, said Tuesday that she hasn’t heard from anyone with specific information. Police officers contacted Breckenridge on a domestic violence complaint the day before she went...
About a dozen people who showed up for an informational meeting about a wastewater treatment plant project got assurances from two Gray & Osborne engineers that the extent of change was necessary to meet agency requirements. Jeff Stevens and Dave Van Cleve of G&O stated that the different elements of the project were as low as possible in cost and would allow considerable growth. The remodeling of the existing 40-year-old plant will likely begin in 2013 and take from 12 to 18 months to complete,...
A fund that has boosted Grant County’s development by hundreds of millions of dollars over the last decade is on hold, possibly permanently. The county’s “Strategic Infrastructure Program” has made it possible for large and small projects around the county to attract other grant and loan funding, resulting in economic gains from Grand Coulee to Royal City. The program added $250,000 of leverage to the funding package that built Coulee Medical Center. It helped pay for improvements that attracted Microsoft and Yahoo! to Quincy, and it was ins...
The new Keller ferry will likely be assembled near the Crescent Bay boat ramp before its launch in May, 2013, the Regional Board of Mayors learned recently. Two officials, Mark Houghton and Warren Snider, of the Foss Maritime Company, the successful bidders on the project, briefed the mayors on the schedule and procedure they plan to follow in delivering the new 116-foot ferry to the Keller Ferry site. Foss submitted the winning bid of $9.6 million, some $250,000 below the Department of Transportation estimate of the cost of the ferry that will...
Electric City’s council elected Lonna Bussert to fill Willie Bott’s vacated council seat last Tuesday night. Two residents, Bussert and Bradley Parrish, had written letters of interest and appeared at the council meeting. Council members went into closed session to discuss qualifications of the two candidates and returned to make their choice. That’s when things started to go askew. Members wanted to select their new member by secret ballot. “We live in a small community where everyone knows e...
There’s a new twist to the Ridge Riders this year. The hallmark event put on by the local horse riding club, the Colorama Rodeo, will be held as usual on Mother’s Day weekend in May. But that’s where the similarity ends and some new beginnings begin. First new thing out of the chutes this year will be a riding clinic, staged over four days, March 31 - April 3. The event is for riders of all skills, even beginners. People can sign up for one of the days or all four days, getting a break if they p...
A group of people from the Senior Center appeared at the Electric City Council meeting last week to support Councilmember Birdie Hensley’s appointment as the city’s representative to the Grant County’s public transportation system, Grant Transit Authority. GTA operates a dozen bus routes from George to Coulee Dam. As it turned out, Councilmember Bob Rupe was also in the running for the appointment, having served on the advisory board for several years earlier. Seniors, who work with Hensley at the Senior Center, in turn spoke on her behal...
Democracy is not easy for couch potatoes or cowards. To work, it demands much of us, including our attention, our willingness to be publicly right or wrong, and a recognition by the general public that at some point we’re each likely to end up on either side of an argument that makes us uncomfortable. Two instances in the last week reminded me just how much we hate such discomfort. First, Electric City Council members were thinking they should vote on a public matter (electing a new member) with a secret ballot. That’s against the law for the...
From over 40 years of experience working with city and tribal councils, county commissioners, and board members, I’ve come to expect a certain level of interest from them – about their community and the things that affect it … the things that matter. I’ve grown to respect them for the attention and courtesy they show for their “constituency.” And then in a flash, in one moment of “Coulee Dam reality,” that respect was tarnished. The town is facing one of its largest expenditures ever, a $6.2 million ill-conceived and unnecessary pro...
“On my Honor I will do my best to: Do my duty to God and my country To obey the Scout laws To help other people at all times To keep myself physically strong Mentally awake and morally straight.” Since its founding in 1910, over 100 million youths have joined the ranks of “The Boy Scouts of America” and memorized these 39 words. Words which speak of one making a voluntary pledge based solely on their “Personal Honor.” A pledge in which one promises to fulfill their personal spiritual and civic duties, to constantly seek ways to serve their...
On Monday, at noon at Omak City Park, Jan. 23 there will be a March for Life in Omak so that we will not forget that it is legal to kill an innocent, helpless baby in a mother’s womb through abortion. Everyone is welcome to join us. January 22 commemorates the sad, infamous day that the U.S. Supreme Court passed the Roe vs. Wade decision legalizing abortion on demand in the United States of America in 1973. Common sense tells us that this is wrong. It seems that not much attention is directed at the killing of these babies any longer, it s...
Ten Years Ago Representative from a nationwide company last week pitched the idea of turning the local landfill into a transfer station, but the four regional mayors who control it may not be interested. Final results of an Electric City pump test have shown that, from a supply viewpoint, Electric City residents wouldn’t come up short if they sold groundwater to Grand Coulee. With the pump test’s conclusion and collection of data, the process of decision making regarding a sharing of the aqu...
Deputy clerk Debbie Pifer puts another dog ornament on her tree at Electric City’s city hall. Each time a resident comes in to purchase a dog license, Pifer makes out an ornament relative to the type of dog it is, and puts it on the tree. Residents have until Jan. 31, to get their pet licenses....

The Raiders took both the Trojans and Hornets for a ride as LR cruised to two easy wins last week. “I thought we showed good pride in our defensive effort and execution,” Raider Head Coach Brad Wilson said. In Tuesday’s game against Manson, the Raiders emptied the bench as they rolled the Trojans for a 90-40 victory. Manson fell behind early and could not overcome their own mistakes to get back into the game. Ty Egbert had complete control of the paint and racked up 24 points, including an al...
After a blowout victory Tuesday against Manson, the Lady Raiders faced a challenge in the Oroville Hornets Friday at home in front of a large crowd. Lake Roosevelt had to respond to the Hornets’ tenacity and overcome their comeback attempts. Neither team gained the upper hand in the first quarter until the end when the momentum swung to the Lady Raiders who held onto it through the second quarter for a 35-22 cushion going into halftime. The Hornets adjusted after the half and roared back in t...
