  • GCHS Alumni association to hold first meeting

    Grand Coulee High School Alumni Association will hold the first of three regularly scheduled meetings for 2014 on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 1 p.m., at United Methodist Church, 405 Center Street, Grand Coulee. The purpose of the organization is to recognize outstanding graduates of Lake Roosevelt High School by the awarding of two $500 scholarships each year. Money for the scholarships is raised by annual dues of $10 from anyone who at one time attended Grand Coulee schools, as well as graduates of GCHS.   • 4-H YFP offered swim lessons

    Who goes swimming in January? Colville Reservation youth do if they participated in 4-H YFP (Youth and Families with Promise)! Every Saturday in January through Feb. 1, has been filled with bus rides to the YMCA in Spokane, so that Keller youth could participate in swimming lessons and free swim time in an indoor pool. Twenty youth and their chaperones have braved the cold, early mornings to board a bus and ride for two hours, to take swim lessons. The swim instructors are trained lifeguards... Full story

    Joining the Arbor Day Foundation is an ideal way to get in the mood for spring planting. Anyone from Washington who joins the Foundation in February 2014 will receive 10 free Colorado blue spruce trees to plant when the weather turns warm.   • High school ASB paver project

    The Lake Roosevelt High School Associated Student Body has been selling “Pavers” as a fundraiser to support extra-curricular programs. This fundraiser will run until Friday, Feb. 14. The ASB will be running a special on the Pavers for only $75 each. Pavers will be outside for everyone to see all year long when construction of the new bulding is complete.     The Lady Raiders picked up two road wins last week at Bridgeport and Manson, lifting their overall win-loss record to 7-8 and their Central Washington 2B record to 5-2. Lake Roosevelt is in second place in the north half of the league, with a two-game lead over the Bridgeport Fillies. The Lady Raiders started the Jan. 28 game at Bridgeport slow. Both sides had trouble making shots and ball handling was an issue as they traded steals.     by John R. McNeil II The Raiders extended their winning streak to three games as they defeated Bridgeport and Manson last week. At Bridgeport, the Raiders started out slow having trouble in the rebounding department and in playing consistently at both ends of the court, but established a lead at the end of the first quarter, 19-11. The second quarter set off a Raider offensive explosion. They racked up 20 points to the Mustangs’ nine. At half, the Raiders led 39-20.     Eleven Raider wrestlers will compete at the sub-regional meet on Saturday at Northwest Christian High School in Colbert. Action starts at 11 a.m. At the sub-regional, the top six wrestlers at each weight class will move on to the regional tournament at Kittitas on the Feb. 15. At Regionals there will be a 16-man bracket with the six from the north sub-regional joined by six from the south sub-regional.     Grand Coulee Police 1/27- Police went to Coulee Medical Center on a request from mental health officials who had an active pickup order on a person at the hospital. A medical doctor told police that they were not needed, so they left the facility until later when they learned that the man was wanted out of Mattawa for first-degree robbery.
