    Roger S Lucas|Mar 2, 2016

Glo Carroll has been selected as The Star newspaper's "Volunteer of the Year." She topped the voting total of 171 people who took the time to vote for Carroll and for Archie Dennis, who came in second in the balloting. Glo is the kind of person you can't say no to. She rose to prominence locally during the huge North Star wildfire last summer as she recruited the help of local people and of residents throughout the state to help the brave firefighters who were being stretched thin across fire...

  • Hospital to build a daycare

    Scott Hunter|Mar 2, 2016

It’s hard to go to work if you’ve got no one to watch the kids. That’s a problem Coulee Medical Center will tackle, at least for its own employees, following a decision by hospital commissioners Monday night. They voted to spend up to $15,000 to fund a refurbishment of the basement of the old clinic building to house a daycare program for hospital employees. A relative lack of daycare facilities was identified as a problem for economic development locally as far back as 2009 by the Horizons study funded by a grant through Washington State...

    Roger S Lucas|Mar 2, 2016

Officers from Grant County’s Interagency Narcotics Enforcement Team and the Secret Service Thursday initiated their second Grand Coulee raid within the past three weeks, this time on a house at 409 A Street. Officers recovered several items that had earlier been taken in a burglary on Wetzel Street in Grand Coulee. Officers served a search warrant after investigators developed information that Melvin Toulou, 43, had been storing stolen property at the house. Toulou had been arrested Feb. 12, when his home was raided and officers found e...

  • Colvilles to gain millions in settlement

    Mar 2, 2016

The Colville Tribes will gain millions from an agreement approved last week that settles the claims of nearly 700 tribes nationwide against the federal government. The nearly $1 billion settlement with the Obama administration has been reached over claims the government shorted tribes for decades on contract costs to manage education, law enforcement and other federal services. Tribes and tribal agencies are expected to submit claims for compensation ranging from $8,000 for some Alaska Native villages to $58 million for the Navajo Nation. The C...

  • Local bull rider named "Iron Cowboy" in Texas

    Roger S Lucas|Mar 2, 2016

Shane Proctor, a 2003 graduate of Lake Roosevelt High School and longtime resident of Grand Coulee, showed his toughness, again, last Saturday, by winning the “Iron Cowboy” award at Arlington, Texas. It was another feather in Proctor’s cowboy hat, and a little jingle to boot, as the win gave him prize money of $115,625, and vaulted him from eighth to first in the Professional Bull Riding world standings. Now it’s on to the next PBR major, the third of four, this time in Las Vegas, Nevada. He won it all Saturday before some 35,000 fans cheerin...

  • Regarding Coulee Dam's natural resources, parks, trees, etc.

    Carol Netzel|Mar 2, 2016

I wish to commend Mayor Wilder, the Coulee Dam Town Council, and the Natural Resources and Parks Board for the time and effort they have spent on bringing our Comprehensive Plan for the town up to date. In researching the history involved, I discovered that the first ordinance was passed in 1959. It is very short, establishing a Parks Board. Since then, the town has gone through many changes and revisions. Changes took place in 1990, 2006 and 2008. Now we are faced with possibly more changes. In 1998 a very comprehensive plan was completed...

  • Take medical coverage beyond the gap

    Johnathan Hladik|Mar 2, 2016

The Affordable Care Act was signed into law six years ago this month. The uninsured rate is now 11.9 percent, the lowest ever recorded. Approximately 17 million more Americans have health insurance today than before the law was passed. Hospitals across the nation have saved tens of billions of dollars on uncompensated care. Despite this progress, over five million Americans remain unable to access health insurance because they fall into the “coverage gap.” These individuals make too much income to qualify for Medicaid, but too little to be eli...

  • Put down the controller and walk away, spring is here

    Jesse Utz|Mar 2, 2016

The gray days filled with gloom and chill are disappearing fast. The robins are moving in and the buttercups are blooming. Sneezing is more prevalent, and that means spring is here. Yes, you may open the curtains now and even open up the door. Don’t worry, that bright light in the sky is the sun. You may not recognize it, but it is. Feel the warmth, the glow, meaning soon we will be complaining about the heat — but not just yet. Kids, if you noticed your dad and mom pulling these long things out of the garage with finger-like things on the end...

  • "Messiah in the Passover" dinner this Saturday at Banks Lake Bible Church

    Mar 2, 2016

Throughout the Bible, God has established certain days and events to remind His people of His faithfulness. For Christians today, those include communion and water baptism. Now we know that these observances do not save us, but they remind us of God’s grace and also in some way provide an illustration of the salvation that God offers through His Son, our Savior, Jesus. To the believers of the Old Testament there was no more significant observation than the Passover; and though we are not specifically instructed to observe the Passover in this a...

Despite playing against fifth graders and starting a second grader, they won nine games and only lost once in league play. They faced their challenges with determination, practiced...

    John R McNeil II|Mar 2, 2016

The Raider boys’ basketball season came to a close Saturday with a big loss in the regional round against Morton-White Pass in Chehalis. This is the third straight year that the Raiders have made it to the regional round on the way to the state tournament and lost. Morton-White Pass is the number-two team in the 2B classification in the state, behind Brewster. The Raiders were in the game at the end of the first quarter. In the second, though, the Timberwolves pulled ahead to a 20-point lead going into halftime. In the third quarter, Morton-Whi...

  • New league should mean less travel

    Roger S Lucas|Mar 2, 2016

Lake Roosevelt High School is in a new Central Washington 2B league. The new league, made up of many of LR’s competitors, will operate under WIAA sanctions for the next four years, and begin this fall. Athletic Director Richard Black told the school board Monday night that the new league met the district’s goals of less travel and more reasonable competition. The schools in the new league will play home and away games against each other and, in most cases, still have games with teams outside their league. In the new league, in addition to Lak...
