A workshop series on learning how to grow your own groceries will be held Thursday, May 3 and Tuesday, May 8. The Thursday workshop will be held at the CFS conference room, 37 Lakes St. (agency campus) in Nespelem and the Tuesday workshop will be held at the Okanogan Armory, 71 Rodeo Trail Rd., Okanogan. Grant County residents may dispose of household hazardous waste for free on Friday, May 11, from 12 pm to 4 pm at the Delano Regional Transfer Station. Only hazardous waste generated by households will be accepted. Hazardous products have labels with words such as warning, danger, caustic, flammable, and poison. Jennika Hill has turned a page in her book and is anxious to get on to the next. Hill placed fourth in Women’s Physique bodybuilding competition last Saturday at the Northern Quest theater in Airway Heights. “Boy was I nervous,” Hill stated Tuesday. Electric City had its second annual Earth Day last Saturday. Popular among the activities was the Brashears Belgian Horse cart rides that traveled up and down Sunny Drive for about three hours. Electric City’s Volunteer Fire Department took kids on rides and provided them with bags of goodies. Grant County Health District gave 25 free bike helmets to kids during a bike safety program. The school board, Monday night, finally agreed to next year’s calendar after nearly an hour-long discussion that ended only when Superintendent Dennis Carlson recommended one of two options before the board. The agreed-to option was the closest calendar to one adopted a couple of months ago by Nespelem School and was in concert with the district’s effort to build a calendar that was as close as possible to the one from Nespelem. Lake Roosevelt High School announced its 10th Gates Millennium Scholar this week. Winning a free ride to a university of choice was Matt Timentwa, a Nespelem resident, who has attended school here since kindergarten. Timentwa’s specialty is math and science. Raider baseball rebounded from a disappointing doubleheader in Liberty Bell to sweep Waterville in a convincing fashion last week. Led by the pitching of Justus DeWinkler, who gave up only one hit while striking out eight batters, the Raiders won April 24 at Greene Field 11-0. DeWinkler received offensive support from Lee Williams, Tyler Garvin and with his own bat. Williams went 2 for 3 with a double and three runs batted in. Garvin also hit a double along with a RBI. The Raider girls’ squad won their first meet of the season last Tuesday at Mansfield, outscoring Entiat by 16 points the final team score of 144. The Raider boys finished fifth with 35 points. Leading the girls’ squad was Kim Barry with three first-place finishes. Two came in her long-distance races: the 800-meter run (2:47.7) and the 3200 (12:50.5). The Lady Raiders came off a week where they were outscored by the Pateros Nannies 83-4 in three games. The bats were more active last week but the Liberty Bell Mountain Lions still racked up 67 runs to the ladies’ 13. In the first game on Tuesday, the Lady Raiders were plagued with errors that lead to several easy runs for the Mountain Lions. The final score was LB 28, LR 6. Raider tennis lost to Entiat last Friday at Entiat by just one match on the boys’ side. Nick Rice continues to beat Juan Vasquez 8-3. Rice was joined by Daniel Campobasso in the victor's circle after he defeated Colter Peterson 6-1. The Raider boys dropped both of their doubles matches played by the same team of Phoenix Shephard and Hayden Rodriques, which means that the Raiders would have to forfeit one match anyway. Grand Coulee 4/24 - Two residents living on Kelso in Electric City asked police to ban two brothers from crossing their properties. One woman told police that her children had found several drug needles in and around the property and then gave the items to the police.
