    Roger S Lucas|May 7, 2014

About 45 people gathered last Tuesday at Electric City’s fire hall to tell how they needed larger accessory buildings to house their “toys” and to criticize government for being too obtrusive. It was the city’s planning commission workshop, held to discuss the pros and cons of the size of accessory buildings as outlined in the comprehensive plan. Most who spoke were in favor of larger buildings; currently, accessory buildings are limited to 850 square feet. They suggested that the size be raised to 1,600 square feet, and then 2,000 square... Full story

  • Cities, loosen that grip

    Scott Hunter|May 7, 2014

As you enjoy Colorama this week, be thankful for the place where much of it comes together — North Dam Park and Event Center — and think about the sand dunes that would replace it if ceases to exist, which it could. This community asset is just one of the potential casualties of irrational stinginess on the part of some city council members who think the only funds they currently spend on the park just shouldn’t be spent that way. A very large cache of those funds, from hotel/motel taxes that are supposed to support tourism, sit doing nothi... Full story

  • My mom gets the credit and the blame

    Scott Hunter|May 7, 2014

One of several traits that I owe overwhelmingly to my mother is a little understood love of argument. In that way, my mother touches you today. Mom was a very intelligent woman, who instilled in me the unshakeable feeling that every side of a discussion must be heard and argued. I also married a woman with whom I share an understanding that debate and argument is sport. So you may understand when I publish an editorial in the coming issue of The Star that most of you will dislike and some will... Full story

There will be bucking bulls, and more bucking bulls, and a wild horse race! A wild horse race? That's right, an added feature to the third annual Cleatis Lacy Memorial Bull Riding event this year, May 24, is a wild horse race. Jesse Utz|May 7, 2014

This last weekend we took a last-second trip to Liberty, Wash. Never heard of it? Well, if you google it you will have a hard time, too. But now you will only find the remnants of a cool little town that the current residents are very proud of. The miners still have their claims and the remaining buildings are part of the Historical Society. Liberty is a... Full story

  • Challenge to Hillary Is Democratic win-win

    Rich Lowry|May 7, 2014

Hillary Clinton is in a formidable position to win the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, should she decide to run. But someone else also is in an enviable position: Whoever challenges her. The dynamics of the Democratic 2016 race so far feel more like an incumbent president clearing the primary field of any potential spoilers prior to a re-election bid rather than a wide-open nomination contest. At this early juncture, the question is not so much who will be her opponent(s), but whether she will have any, or even one. She certainly... Full story
