  • City considering allowing marijuana retailing

    Roger S Lucas|Jul 22, 2015

Electric City’s planning group is looking at its current zoning to see where a marijuana retail store might be located. The city council instructed staff and the city’s planner last week to take a look at the city’s current zoning to determine where any possible marijuana retail store might be located within the city. The city staff, along with its professional planner, has been handed the duties of the planning commission after its members resigned over the recent flap on the size of accessory buildings. City Clerk Jackie Perman said the c... Full story

  • Golf carts legal to drive in Electric City

    Roger S Lucas|Jul 22, 2015

By this time next week you can drive your golf cart down to get the mail and for other things in Electric City. The city council passed an ordinance July 22, allowing a golf cart zone in the city. All you have to do to get started is buy a golf cart, get it decked out to make it street legal, then get it registered at city hall. There’s a $30 annual fee. Oh, yes, make sure that your driver’s license is up to date and that you have liability insurance. The “zone” is any public roadway within the city of Electric City having a speed limit o... Full story

  • Two die in Banks Lake car wreck

    Scott Hunter|Jul 22, 2015

Two people died Tuesday night, July 14, in a one-car rollover accident just north of Coulee City. Antonina Kononewski, 71, of Soap Lake, was driving the white 2001 Subaru Legacy north on SR 155 at 7:05 p.m. when it left the roadway to the right, then crossed both lanes and left the roadway to the left, continued down an embankment and came to rest on its top in the water, the Washington State Patrol reports. It happened 4.8 miles north of Coulee City. Kononewski, who had worn a seatbelt, was taken to Coulee Medical Center but died later at...

  • Regional fires flare in hot season

    Roger S Lucas|Jul 22, 2015

A stubborn brush fire closed Interstate-90 near George for the second straight day, but it reopened Tuesday about 10 a.m. The fire was driven by wind gusts of 25 mph and had burned about 900 acres by Tuesday. Winds continue to be a problem, a Grant County sheriff spokesman stated, and will largely determine how the fire is fought. A firetruck from Electric City went to the George area Monday but returned later that night. The fire started Sunday afternoon and flared up Monday. Residents in some... Full story

  • Muellers lived in The Big House

    Scott Hunter|Jul 22, 2015

During construction of Grand Coulee Dam, it was a dormitory. But by construction time for the Third Powerhouse, the big house across from the Coulee Dam Town Hall was just right for one big family. Bob and Jean Mueller moved to town in 1967, when he was hired as an engineer on the project. They were one of 20 families from Page, Arizona that had moved here to work on the new powerhouse, Jean Mueller told the chamber of commerce members at a recent luncheon. But the move may have been more... Full story

  • Art show features different Native American art

    Scott Hunter|Jul 22, 2015

An outdoor native American art exhibit last weekend drew a dozen artists for a first-of-its kind show. On Midway Ave. across from Coulee Hardware in the parking lot of Body by Dam, the judged show and market featured several artists from across the northwest and a style not often seen. You may be familiar with the art of coastal tribes with stylized whale images, for example. Or you might readily recognize the art of Southwest tribes, with prominent turquoise and silver. But this show was... Full story

  • Ever wonder how a street gets its name?

    Jul 22, 2015

Electric City has spelled it all out for you and added numbering as well. The council took a poke at making it all clear during discussions at its meeting last week. This might help you out: Avenue is used for continuous north south streets. Street used for continuous east west streets. Court used for cul-de-sacs with more than 3 lots. Place used for a street parallel a number venue where numbering is out of sequence. Circle is used for streets that return to themselves. Loop is used for streets that begin and end on the same street or for... Full story

  • Water agreement extended five decades

    Roger S Lucas|Jul 22, 2015

Electric City and Grand Coulee have amended and extended their water supply agreement for 50 years. Both city councils have agreed to the extension, and the agreement has been signed by both mayors. Electric City provides Grand Coulee with potable water through a 16-inch inter-tie pipeline, using water from its three wells just south of city hall and by special arrangement, utilizing Grand Coulee’s water rights. The new agreement includes the Electric City’s arsenic treatment plant and its services, the plant not having been in service yet whe... Full story

  • Thanks for a job with variety

    Jul 22, 2015

Last weekend called for attending and photographing two events that represent opposite ends of the social variety spectrum. I couldn’t help but think that their occasions on the same day in the same community serve as an indicator of a healthy diversity in local society. It takes all kinds, as the old saying goes. And it does, at least in America. George Washington knew that as he established practices for his officers and troops to follow that sought to hinder the spread of hard feelings, or at least stifle their appearance. He knew that to w... Full story

  • Don't push Japan to re-arm

    Jul 22, 2015

U.S. Army General Douglas MacArthur’s finest hour may not have been any sort of combat-related command decision on his part, but his role in assisting in the rise of a hugely prosperous and a decidedly peace-loving Japan after World War II. Japan’s so-called “Pacifist Constitution,” which was enacted at MacArthur’s express urging and which “forever” enjoined Tokyo from returning to militarist ways, is widely credited with laying the groundwork for today’s Japan of high-tech exports and mammoth financial prowess. Now, as diligent follow... Full story

  • Supporting our small businesses by addressing burdensome regulations

    Dan Newhouse Congressman|Jul 22, 2015

I recently read a news story of an outstanding teenager in Prosser named Walker Orr. Since he was 8 years old, Walker has found innovative ways to offer a service or product in exchange for a reasonable price, from selling varieties of seeds to running a lawn mowing business. Now at the age of just 16, Walker has started a small artisan bread company, Amber Artisan Bread, selling loaves and baguettes at farmers markets in Prosser and Tri-Cities. How can we as a nation encourage budding entrepreneurs just like Walker and those who work hard... Full story

  • Wanted: The moral thread of society

    Jesse Utz|Jul 22, 2015

Have you heard this statement lately? “What is going on with our world today?” Or “That kind of stuff just did not happen when I was a kid.” Well, to be honest with past generations, “that stuff” probably did happen but it was behind closed doors and “it,” whatever it might be, was not used to get viewers to tune in to their station. It may have been less of an issue then, but it still happened. That being said, it does seem that certain issues have been amped up or played up lately as the moral compass seems to have disappeared. If... Full story

  • Coulee Recollections

    Jul 22, 2015

Ten Years go Sunbanks Lake Resort will begin construction of 11 villas in September and they will be ready for occupancy by the summer tourist season, chamber of commerce members learned Thursday. The town of Coulee Dam is going ahead with a sidewalk project along the Columbia Avenue, despite strong opposition from residents who fear the intentional cutting of roots will kill the town’s big trees. The Delano Landfill has only about a year and a half to go before it reaches its capacity. Foisy and Kennedy Inc. will move to its new location at 3... Full story
