    A thank-you note from a firefighter fills a whiteboard in the foyer at Nespelem Elementary School, which offered refuge from scorching daytime heat to some 235 night-shift workers on the Devil's Elbow Complex Fire, who found it impossible to sleep in their tents. The school paid two of its employees overtime to clean up walls afterward, and an outside contractor re-cleaned every carpet for $13,000 after the firefighters left.   • Public can nominate for "highly capable" school program

    Nominations are being accepted, from Aug. 26 through Oct. 1, for current students in the Grand Coulee Dam School District’s highly capable program. Students in kindergarten through 12th grade who are identified as highly capable of high academic and intellectual ability will have an opportunity to explore concepts in greater depth and further develop their thinking and creativity.   • Colville Tribe stocks Rufus Woods with thousands of fish

    Staff from the Colville Tribes Resident Fish (CTRF) program released approximately 5,700 “triploid” rainbow trout ranging from two to three pounds each into Lake Rufus Woods July 31. The fish, which can be identified by the absence of the adipose fin, are part of a supplementation effort of the Rufus Woods Net Pen Project, which the program’s staff oversees. The CTRF program purchases these fish from a local commercial aquaculture facility. Since 2011, some 118,100 triploid rainbow trout have been released into Lake Rufus Woods. Appro... Full story

    Grand Coulee Police 8/18 - Police checked on an Almira woman after receiving a report that she might be suicidal. She assured the patrolman that she was OK and not thinking about that. The report stated that the house was orderly and everything appeared OK. - A woman on Dill Avenue reported to police that a fire safe had been taken from her home.
