  • Students mostly prevail on dress code issue

    Scott Hunter|Aug 30, 2023

Students racked up a policy victory at Lake Roosevelt Jr/Sr High School Monday when the school district board of directors voted to implement most of their recommended changes to the dress code, one evening before school began. A group of Associated Student Body officers and representatives had presented their ideas to the board Aug. 14 using a sneaky tactic: they looked and acted exactly like typical high school students, then admitted that only one of the eight of them was meeting the current...

  • City to pay contractor to run sewer plant

    Scott Hunter|Aug 30, 2023

Grand Coulee’s city council voted just days before they had no operator to sign a one-year contract for operation of its sewer plant via an independent contractor, on an emergency basis. At the time on Aug. 23, the current employee had given notice earlier this month to retire on Aug. 25 after months of being the lone operator. The contractor, SJ Environmental, had already been in talks with both Grand Coulee and Electric City about running the plant and doing other related work. The plant processes 184,000 gallons of waste a day in the s...

  • Naval Academy alums rides across US for Veterans' causes

    Scott Hunter|Aug 30, 2023

The plan is to make it across the country in 44 stops, while along the way garnering even more pledges of support for veterans' causes, and, around here, dodging wildfires. A group of bicyclists stayed overnight in Coulee Dam and Grand Coulee Saturday, leaving early Sunday morning on day five of their trek that started at the naval airbase on Whidbey Island. Their "Navy '83 Ride Across America" will get them to their Naval Academy class of 1983 reunion in Annapolis, Maryland in October. Allan...

  • A time for city councils to act

    Connie Williamson|Aug 30, 2023

Our community has a problem that only determined residents can solve at this time. Let me paint you a picture: You own property within the city limits...sidewalks, street parking etc. You wake one day to find an obviously disabled, senior man in a wheelchair, sitting outside your window on the sidewalk. Being a compassionate person, you go out to offer him assistance; he asks for food and a beverage or maybe money, but declines all else. You oblige. This becomes his ritual. But now he is panhandling, harassing passersby, drinking, defecating...

  • The harness maker

    Jack Stevenson|Aug 30, 2023

Observers sense American discontent with a rapidly changing world. A recently cited indicator is a suddenly popular song called “Rich Men North of Richmond.” Citizens seeking public office need to be wealthy or sell their allegiance to wealthy benefactors. Government has become confusing, with our national government and our state governments making an array of conflicting laws and an endless stream of court decisions and reversals that deliver uncertainty. Opinion polls indicate substantial pessimism regarding our rancid political env...

  • Stages of an extended family

    Roger Lucas|Aug 30, 2023

For a lot of years, I have enjoyed how my family has grown. It started and flourished for a time with my four kids, two boys and two girls. It is always true that as parents we have notions on what our kids might become. Toss that idea; kids are going to make their own choices, and sometimes stumble along the way. If you are honest and clear your mind, you likely will remember a few times you stubbed your toes along the way. As parents, we have the unique ability to make adjustments and start over again. Sometimes it takes a lot of adjusting....

  • What to like about the GOP's primary debate

    Michael Reagan|Aug 30, 2023

As usual, there was too much cross-talk and chaos on stage. And there was way too much partisan cheering and hooting by the audience. But the first Republican presidential primary debate on Fox News was an entertaining spectacle. Instead of watching Tucker Carlson interview Donald Trump on Twitter/X, it was a good way to check out the personalities and political positions of the GOP’s lineup of second and third stringers who have the impossible dream of beating out Trump for the party’s 2024 nomination. No one jumped off the screen and loo...

  • Coulee Cops

    Aug 30, 2023

Grand Coulee Police 8/20 - A woman told police that while driving toward the Four Corners intersection, her ex-boyfriend was driving in front of her. She realized her brakes didn’t work and was unable to stop at the stop sign. She said that her ex swerved in an attempt to cause a collision. Police spoke to the boyfriend who explained he had swerved to avoid a collision, and that he had been aware there was an issue with the brakes on the woman’s car. Police determined that there was insufficient evidence a crime had occurred. The woman was tol...

  • North Cascades, Wheatland banks to merge in new division

    Aug 30, 2023

You can probably look for a new bank sign near the Four Corners in the next few months. After the deal closes, North Cascades Bank will merge into Wheatland Bank to form Glacier Bancorp's new Wheatland Bank division, Glacier said earlier this month. That depends on the agreement of the shareholders of their respective holding companies and banking regulators. Community Financial Group, Inc., the Spokane-based holding company of Wheatland Bank, has entered into an agreement to join the Glacier...
