  • Consolidation discussion coming Thursday

    Jacob Wagner|Sep 26, 2018

The topic of local area towns consolidating into one will be discussed at the Wine Bar on Main Street in Grand Coulee on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 5:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend the informal meeting, described as a social event. The open discussion will be attended by representatives from SCJ Alliance, a company that was involved in the consolidation of Joint Base Lewis-McChord, a combination of Army and Air Force bases south of Tacoma, and who will be able to answer questions concerning the logistics of such an ambitious idea. A survey on...

  • Fire burns in Elmer City in high winds

    Scott Hunter|Sep 26, 2018

If you're thinking of driving to Elmer City to take a look at the fire, don't. The road is blocked. High winds threw the fire across the highway 155 tonight after a fire started in the trailer court below the highway. Details are sketchy now, but one person with a radio said at least three mobile homes had burned, and from a vantage point a couple miles away the fire apparently had burned up a ravine that skirts the town to its south, threatening houses on the hillside. A fire truck drove up to... Full story

  • B Street closure to continue

    Jacob Wagner|Sep 26, 2018

The Grand Coulee city council voted to extend the closure of B Street through October 2019 while the United States Bureau of Reclamation continues to build their fire station off of Highway 155. "We would like to think that they're going to bring the road to a better condition than it was," said Mayor Paul Townsend. Construction on the building began in April 2017, and the council laughed about the length of time construction seems to be taking. The bureau awarded the $13.6 million construction...

  • PUD leader reports to chamber

    Scott Hunter|Sep 26, 2018

A literal power struggle is going on in Grant County, and an electric utility commissioner explained Grant PUD's policies to chamber of commerce members last week. Commissioner Terry Brewer said the county's irrigators don't like the path the PUD commissioners set when they decided that the utility's core customers, including irrigators, would always get cheaper power made at the PUD's Priest Rapids Dam. That policy also puts the utility on a course to lessen the subsidy that keeps rates for...

  • Scott Abrahamson: a scholar and a daredevil

    Jacob Wagner|Sep 26, 2018

When his head isn't buried in an engineering textbook, Scott Abrahamson spends his time jumping from one bareback horse to another in races. The 2016 Lake Roosevelt salutatorian, Abrahamson continues to excel at academics, pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering at Eastern Washington University, where he recently pulled a 3.8 grade-point average. "All through school, he was pulling 4.0s," his mother, Gina Palmer said. "He's always been super smart. He was in the advanced classes."...

  • Dam fined by EPA for hazardous waste violations

    Sep 26, 2018

The Bureau of Reclamation was fined $115,500 by the Environmental Protection Agency for hazardous waste handling violations at the Grand Coulee Dam. The EPA said in a press release Tuesday that the action was taken at the request of the state of Washington’s Department of Ecology. “We conducted this inspection at the Dam at the Department of Ecology’s request and found some areas of non-compliance,” said Chris Hladick, EPA Regional Administrator in Seattle. “Proper handling and management of hazardous waste is a serious responsibility that prot...

  • Councilmember: New law could enlist landlord help on drug houses

    Jacob Wagner|Sep 26, 2018

Grand Coulee is still considering an ordinance addressing the problem of drug houses. Councilmember Tom Poplawski updated the council on the endeavor the city started looking at earlier this year. A nuisance or drug house, with a history of crimes occuring there, or of people being charged with crimes while staying there, could be boarded up for a year. In such an instance, the city would report the house, and a Grant County Superior Court judge would look at the case to approve or deny the seizure of the property. Poplawski said he has...

  • Driver airlifted to hospital after chase ends in crash

    Jacob Wagner|Sep 26, 2018

A Nespelem man was airlifted to Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane Friday night after a police chase ended in a wreck in a ravine. At 9:53 p.m. Sept. 21, Jeremiah Wippel, 41, was allegedly attempting to elude Coulee Dam police officer Michael Sullivan when high speeds led Wippel to strike a guardrail on a turn near milepost 31, north of Elmer City. The car Wippel was driving came to a rest on its top in a ravine near the rock cut. Officer Sullivan had attempted to pull Wippel over after seeing Wippel speeding 39 miles per hour in a 20 mph zone...

  • Maxed out water group meets with City of Grand Coulee

    Jacob Wagner|Sep 26, 2018

A private water association that provides water services to residents in the Delano area is maxed out in its ability to provide water to people and expressed interest in Grand Coulee taking it over. The New Columbia Water Association buys water from Grand Coulee, then provides it to their clients. Wayne Fowler, who has developed property within the association’s boundary lines, has requested water service, which the association approved. But their equipment — pipes, pumps, and meters — are is essentially at their limits as far as provi...

  • Your denials could save the U.S. money

    Roger Lucas|Sep 26, 2018

I would like to make it clear: I didn’t do it! It wasn’t me who wrote that op-ed piece in the New York Times telling of the disarray at the White House. This is for the record. I do not know anyone that works for the Times, I have never been in their building, and I have not met with anyone from the Times at an alternate location. Now, I must admit that I do receive the Times’ Sunday edition, courtesy of my daughter, Kathy Beck. I receive it on Monday, but I do not have contact with a member of their staff. It comes in the mail. For insta...

  • Christine Brown for Congress

    Jan Nilsson|Sep 26, 2018

Recent large funerals for icons of music and democracy were cause to reflect on what it means to be American. We weighed heavy words: honor, respect, teamwork, service, greatness; this reminds us that our country is based on liberty and equality for all with a free press. Let these words not only be whispers, but a roar! Our country needs “lions” in Congress, those strong enough to reach across the aisle for the good of the people. In November, I will be voting for Christine Brown, a candidate with the strength to cross the aisle. Go to Chr...

  • Please re-elect Cindy Carter for Grant County Commissioner

    Holly Wellsandt|Sep 26, 2018

My occupation as a tree fruit consultant for the past 23 years has afforded me the opportunity to work with Cindy Carter, not only as a consultant, but as a concerned citizen. Grant County currently possesses roughly 55,000 acres of tree fruit. The present acreage in the county boasts almost 40 million trees, making Grant County the highest apple-producing county in Washington as well as the U.S. Apples generate $4.7 billion (yes with a B) and potatoes create $686 million in annual sales to the state every year. Grant County captures the...

  • P.U.D. residential rates subsidized, yeah right

    Ryan Van Dyke|Sep 26, 2018

Terry Brewer and Patti Paris think residential and irrigators’ power rates are subsidized. By whom … the data centers? The residents and farmers of this county built Wanapum and Priest Rapids dams 60 years ago at the cost of $100 million each and put in all the infrastructure to run power to everybody in the county. Who is subsidizing whom? The data centers came in and gobbled up a lot of our cheap power. They have only been here maybe 10 years and they think they’re subsidizing us ... come on. The data centers have negotiated with the current...

  • Like a roaring lion

    Jesse Utz|Sep 26, 2018

Sometimes a subject, a number or an object comes up over and over again in a person’s life. This object or phrase seems to keep showing itself in conversation, dreams, stories or testimonies, and it makes one think to themselves, “God, what are you trying to tell me?” I have a good friend who is always seeing the numbers 18 or 19. On the clock, in scripture or in normal conversation, when she hears or sees these numbers, she takes notice because God seems to be telling her something and she h...

  • Policies on subs, transgender students under review

    Jacob Wagner|Sep 26, 2018

The Grand Coulee Dam School District is considering policies related to transgender students, as well as substitute teacher qualifications. School board members were presented with the proposed policies at the Sept. 24 board meeting. The transgender policy addresses concerns such as communicating with a student on what their gender identification is and how they wish to be addressed, and addresses related consideration regarding the dress code, preventing bullying or discrimination of students, and not forcing students to use a restroom that...
