  • Council's strategic inaction stymies business plan Mechanic shop owner may file suit

    Scott Hunter|Oct 1, 2014

Doing nothing can change everything if you couch the resulting message just right. Official city inaction Monday night dashed Mike Horne’s hopes of moving his auto repair business down the street and had him threatening a lawsuit. The city council declined to appeal a building permit issued Aug. 18 to Horne by city staff, who were under the assumption the permit was for his current business address — 123 Midway Ave., next door to Pepper Jack’s Bar and Grille. But the address Horne gave the clerk to put on the permit is for 19 Midway, a curre...

  • Chamber of commerce committees pushing economic development

    Scott Hunter|Oct 1, 2014

by Scott Hunter It's not as evident as the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce's annual Colorama parade through the main business district, but chamber committees have been working behind the scenes on both problems and opportunities, identified with a goal of boosting economic development leading to growth and jobs. And one big lead just opened up. The now vacant Center School in Grand Coulee, along with more than eight acres of land in the middle of the city, could become available to...

  • New programs raise sticky questions for schools

    Scott Hunter|Oct 1, 2014

Advances in a program designed to help high school students get a leg up on college are raising questions for the local school district. Some juniors and seniors at Lake Roosevelt High School are enrolled in Wenatchee Valley College’s new online version of Running Start, which lets students earn college credit before graduating from high school, for free. Previously, students had to travel to Omak to attend WVC to take advantage of the program, but this year the college is offering it online. Three LR students participated last year. That numbe...

  • Golf course heading toward black

    Roger S Lucas|Oct 1, 2014

The port district is inching its way into the black at Banks Lake Golf Course. Grant County Port District 7 is about to end its third year as caretaker of the 18-hole golf course. In its first management year, the district invested about $100,000 to keep the course open after making a pledge at a community meeting that the district would not allow the course to close. At a report last Thursday, port commissioners talked about the successes of maintaining the course this past season with volunteer help, increasing membership at the course and...

  • False economy?

    Carol Netzel|Oct 1, 2014

In discussing the possibility of attaching water meters to the irrigation system of West Coulee Dam, one fact has not been brought to the attention of the townspeople. It is a factor that should be considered very carefully before we arrive at a decision. The sewer, potable water and irrigation water lines were installed in 1935-36. This makes them almost 70 years old. The type of piping used in the irrigation system is susceptible to rust and corrosion and becomes more brittle as it ages. Sections of the irrigation line have begun to leak or,...

  • Better for having known Donna

    Stephanie Graves|Oct 1, 2014

When we moved here from Georgia 15 years ago, the Hamiltons were among the first to welcome us to the area. She put the pin in our home town of St. Mary’s, GA . The Hamiltons were there when we took our 7-month-old granddaughter to the pumpkin patch. And every year and grandchild . I, for one, will miss her smiling face when I go to the patch this year. She always asked how you were doing, and I loved to hear her stories. I am better for knowing her. My family is better for having known her. Stephanie Graves...

Cathy McMorris Rodgers voted against a bill to help both College students and active service members. • Respects Dano's drive

    Rocky Wallace|Oct 1, 2014

I’ve known Garth Dano and competed against him since high school. In those 42 years I’ve come to respect Garth’s spirited nature and his drive to succeed. From a law enforcement stand point, I know Garth to carry the same spirited nature and competitive drive in a court of law. Garth is fair, just, and has a strong belief in and respect for our system of justice. Knowing Garth Dano helped to make me better police officer. I have a combined 15-year law enforcement career with Sunnyside WA, Moses Lake WA, (Moses Lake’s first DARE Officer...

  • Experienced leadership needed in prosecutor

    William Riley|Oct 1, 2014

I yearn for the days when Grant County had a mature, experienced and non-controversial prosecutor like John Knodell. The current prosecutor is lacking in all areas, and is costing taxpayers dearly. Experience is gained by decades of interacting with other attorneys, plaintiffs, defendants and judges. Garth Dano is a candidate for Grant County Prosecutor that can bring maturity, experience and guidance to young lawyers in that office. As a taxpayer I can no longer afford paying for the mistakes of inexperience. William Riley Soap...

Yep, tis the season. Hunting season that is. Sorry ladies, (unless you are one of those ladies who don the camouflage and belly crawl in the dirt just like, or better than, the fellas do). So if you are a wife or girlfriend left at home waiting for the smell of fresh blood and bad body odor to return home sometime after dark, then for you I am sorry, but to everyone else - Yippee, it’s hunting season. Of course, most of us hunters have been preparing for months. Whether it was some scouting t...

The Raider Cross Country team was beaten Saturday by their own bus. Enroute to an invitational meet at Connell, the team bus broke down near Coulee City. By the time the replacement bus arrived it was too late to continue to Connell. 20 Years Ago...
