Church to hold first service and open house The rock church in Coulee Dam will host its first service and open house this Sunday, October 9, after the Almira Community Church took ownership. Okanogan County Board of Commissioners candidates will address the public in an open forum Thursday, October 13, in Coulee Dam at Lake Roosevelt Schools. The Grand Coulee Dam School District board approved construction of a heavy-gauge chain link fence at the district's bus complex to protect its fleet from fuel thieves. At a meeting Thursday, board members received a rundown on incidents when thieves have emptied fuel tanks, stolen tires and batteries, and even taken extension cords. Just recently, bus personnel have had to contend with thieves cutting fuel hoses on three Head Start buses. The cost of replacing hoses on those buses runs about $1... Full story
Steamboat Rock State Park is on the grow. Already one of the largest and most popular state parks, a project is underway to add 30 more campsites. When it's finished, 193 of the park's camp sites will be in the main camping area; another 12 are boat sites, only reachable by water. The project, bid at $2.5 million, had to be re-bid since the original low bid of over $3.1 million was above the state park budget. Two Ice Age floods hikes and lectures are scheduled for the Grand Coulee area within the coming week. The hikes and lectures are part of several Cheney-Spokane Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institutes efforts to give interested parties a hands-on experience to learn about the floods that scoured the area about 15,000 years ago. Here's an opportunity to run, or walk, for fun and a good cause. It's Saturday's "Color Me Pink and Purple Fun Run," a breast cancer awareness run and walk. Relating to Coulee Dam police chiefs and officers, prior to the current administration, the “process” was relaxed and lacking under the civil service procedures. And, yes, it might be more expedient. However, Washington state law (RCW chapters 35 and 41) and case-determinations govern and/or limit certain authority under the Civil Service processes … and for good reason! Times change, and they always will. I can remember when county commissioners only met on Mondays to take care of all the business that had to be done. Now, because of so many laws and regulations, a county commissioner has a full-time job. A lot of decisions have to be made, and the public isn’t always aware of all the reasons. Regardless of political leanings, people want their taxes to be spent wisely and efficiently. Having observed our current Board of County Commissioners during their regularly scheduled meetings, I am convinced that efficient use of our tax dollars is not a top priority. Here is an example: on March 21st, a county Public Works employee brought the commissioners a report comparing the costs of outsourcing vs. in-house equipment repairs. Deborah (Debbi) Ann Achord passed away Sunday, October 2, 2016, after a 13-year battle with cancer. Debbi was born April 24, 1960, in Spokane, Washington. She was raised in the coulee area and graduated from Lake Roosevelt High School. She had a love for her horses that was beyond the average horse lover. Florence Desautel passed away on Wednesday, September 21, 2016, in Brewster, Washington. She was born in Colville, Washington, on May 30, 1926, to Barney Rickard and Louise Stone. The Lake Roosevelt Raiders pulled off a dramatic comeback Friday while on the road, coming from behind in the fourth quarter to defeat the Oroville Hornets 34-28 in overtime to go 5-0 for the season. Down by 20 at one point in the game, LR managed to keep Oroville scoreless in the second half. The Lake Roosevelt Cross Country runners participated in the Tonasket Invitational last Wednesday. "Tonasket is one of the last of the old, very hilly courses developed back when district and state courses were very hilly," explained Head Coach Gary Darnold.
