  • Winds (and fires) of change have blown

    Scott Hunter|Oct 10, 2012

In the wake of our recent wildfires, the community likely needs to think about details the now-gone hillside vegetation used to take care of for us. We take for granted the roles played by the everyday, the mundane. A couple of examples may serve to pique our senses into anticipation: • My cat has been getting fat. That’s because (and I admit this is an assumption) because the fire over Coulee Dam devastated the habitat of perhaps thousands of mice, who now show up nightly in our backyard like souls to the pearly gates. Multiple rodent car...

  • Very windy weather expected

    Scott Hunter|Oct 10, 2012

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for Tuesday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. for the local area, expecting sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph. That’s the kind of event that can make driving difficult, especially if you’re in a camper, big truck or other “high profile” vehicle. It can also knock down tree limbs, take out power and blow big objects off your back porch. Batten down the hatches. Here’s the whole wind warning: “Wind Advisory URGENT - WEATHER MESSAGE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SPOKANE WA 219 AM PDT...

  • Coulee Fall Festival offers something new Saturday

    Roger Lucas|Oct 10, 2012

A variety of activities this Saturday will make up the “Coulee Fall Festival,” including hay rides, kids’ karaoke, a community-wide yard sale and a pet show, all just for fun. The Coulee Fall Festival replaces the former Moonlite Madness celebration held later in October. Get decked out, and dress up your pet, for a pet show at the skateboard park. The event begins at 10 a.m. and should be fun for both you and your pet. Remember to bring your leash. There are no restrictions on what kind of pet you bring. Bob Valen, who has been working on th...

  • Fire destroys home

    Roger Lucas|Oct 10, 2012

Fire destroyed a home in Delano Sunday afternoon. Fire officials said the home at 57789 Cardinal Place NE was a total loss. One fire official, Carl Sheehy, a captain of the Electric City Fire Department, said it appeared that the fire started in the crawl space under the house and was probably electrical in nature. The house, owned by Linda Ayotte, of Spokane, was in the process of being sold. Sheehy said the only thing salvaged by firefighters was the carport and a pickup that was there. By...

  • Newsbriefs

    Oct 10, 2012

It’s Fire Prevention Week Mayor Chris Christopherson has proclaimed this week “Fire Prevention Week.” The Grand Coulee Volunteer Fire Department is encouraging residents to have “two ways out” of their residence and practice the routes so all members of the family are familiar with them. The emphasis during the week is to plan escape routes and practice using them in case of fire. In 2011, Fire Chief Rick Paris stated, there were some 369,500 home structure fires in the United States with 13,350 injuries and 2,640 deaths, causing $6.9 bill...

  • Post’s honor guard one of few in state

    Roger Lucas|Oct 10, 2012

American Legion Post 157 honor guard showed Friday night why it has received national certification and is one of only five posts in the state to receive the award. Members of the honor guard presented the colors at Friday night’s homecoming football game between Lake Roosevelt and Manson, and regularly presents colors at other types of local events. The honor guard, made up of members of the various service branches, has helped bring the post back from near extinction. A few years ago the post was almost abandoned for lack of participation. Th...

  • Park idea raises concerns, gets nixed

    Roger Lucas|Oct 10, 2012

Word that Electric City was going to develop a park along the waterfront of Banks Lake brought a number of opposing letters to the city’s planning commission meeting last Friday. Commission members were as surprised as city officials and acted quickly to put the idea to rest. The planning commission instructed City Clerk Jackie Perman to correspond with the letter writing residents and reassure them that there was no plan to put a park in the area. City officials were quick to sign on to the letter. “We are having a hard time financing the upk...

  • Toppled trees becoming big art

    Roger Lucas|Oct 10, 2012

A giant Chinook salmon was forming from a tall blue spruce in Mason City Park over the weekend. It was being carved by Jacob Lucas, who carved the animal, bird and fish figures through the town of Bridgeport. “I could see the salmon in the stump because it had a knot that stuck out, ideal for a fin,” Lucas said. The project was the idea of Coulee Dam Mayor Quincy Snow, who saw an opportunity after a big windstorm in July damaged two big trees in the park, one falling on the other. Lucas sta...

  • Pet parade turns into a show

    Roger Lucas|Oct 10, 2012

A planned pet parade has turned into a “pet show” at Skateboard Park, following a city council meeting at which permission for the parade was declined. Police Chief Mel Hunt and Grand Coulee City Council members were hesitant Oct. 2 to approve the plan to parade pets from Pepper Jack’s parking lot to the NCNB parking lot along Midway Avenue during this Saturday’s Coulee Fall Festival. The chief said the parade would require the involvement of six officers, which had not been budgeted. And he said that number of officers were not readily availab...

  • Investing in progress

    Josh Knauer|Oct 10, 2012

As a software entrepreneur, I find it ironic to see people going online to rail against taxes and government spending. The Internet grew from government research financed by earlier generations of taxpayers. So did computers, GPS technology and many other technologies we take for granted today. The Global Positioning System (GPS) we access from our phones, computers and cars was developed and is still operated by the Department of Defense, which does not charge user fees. We know the companies making the latest commercial products, but not the...

  • Medicare rule could be painful for patients

    Janice Izlar|Oct 10, 2012

Federal officials at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services are currently considering whether to maintain patient access to crucial pain-relief treatments provided by Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) -- or to eliminate these services and risk leaving millions of Americans with chronic pain conditions to suffer on their own. They’ll make their final decision later this fall. For well over a decade, CRNAs have administered routine, chronic pain-management services such as opiate and steroid injections, ultrasound medical i...

  • Coulee Recollections

    Oct 10, 2012

Ten Years Ago Coulee Community Hospital has some changes in progress designed to make a trip to the hospital drier and a parking spot easier to find. Parking lot expansion and replacing the tiles and insulation on the hospital clinic’s roof began Sept. 30. Both projects should finish this week. Ocras Island handed the Lake Roosevelt football team their second loss of the season with a 34-15 Viking victory. Twenty Years Ago Gary and Tammy Norris are the new owners of H&H Grocery in Electric City. The new owners took over the store last month. T...

  • Wild horse populations gaining on reservation

    Michelle Campobasso|Oct 10, 2012

There are an estimated 1,000 wild horses roaming free on the Colville Indian Reservation that have caused significant damage to certain areas they occupy, the tribal Fish and Wildlife Dept. says. The areas that have become overgrazed contribute to the spread of invasive species, compaction, and erosion. The horses also compete with big game animals for forage, the department stated in a press release. “The forage resource is being harmed because the horse is re-grazing the new growth as soon as...

  • About our splendid fall weather

    Bob Valen|Oct 10, 2012

The start of October has been really pleasant fall weather. It really is a nice treat. Our first recorded low back in the 30°F range occurred on Oct. 4. The last 30°F range low was way back on May 12. We are still dry -- way too dry, frankly -- and we are all reminded of that fact with the recent wildfires that have occurred around our region. Excluding the 0.01 inch of rain on Sept. 8 here at the home weather station, we haven’t seen any rain since July 20 -- that’s 80 days as of this writi...

    John McNeil II|Oct 10, 2012

The Raiders recorded their first victory of the 2012 season in Friday night’s homecoming win over the Manson Trojans, 45-27. With the win, the Raiders are tied with White Swan for fourth in the Central Washington 2B League with a one-win, one-loss league record. Manson did not roll over for the Raiders. They returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and gained the lead three times in the first half. Led by a speedy running back and a solid quarterback, the Trojans stayed with the Raiders a...

But the Eagles came back and won the match 3 games to 2. Lady Raiders Head Coach Nate Piturachsatit said he was impressed with the way the girls stayed with the game and did not give up.
