Coulee Dam will get some major road and sidewalk work done as a result of a state grant that will pay for most of it in 2018. The state Department of Transportation announced last week it has awarded a $794,566 grant from the Transportation Improvement Board for work Mayor Greg Wilder called the "centerpiece of several significant projects" the town is planning for the future. The project includes street surface work on Civic Way, Cedar Street, Tulip Street and Crest Drive. The exact elements...
A group of some 22 Coulee Dam citizens met in Electric City Monday night, intent on allying in an effort to impress their town council to fix the sidewalks. The issue of fixing sidewalks has been gaining attention since Fred Netzel, who called the meeting, decided to walk the town and gather signatures on a letter about them. It’s an issue Mayor Greg Wilder readily acknowledges is serious. But the group meeting at the Vets Hall Monday doubts that Wilder’s approach to tackle it is the best one. They want a quicker fix for the worst pro...
Nespelem Elementary opened up a new playground on Tuesday when student Feather Fry cut the ceremonial ribbon and the children rushed to play with the colorful new equipment. The playground, which includes equipment to climb on, spin on, swing on, slide down, and more, was built using $126,000 from the Healthy Use Fitness Grant, a state grant from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction in Olympia. An additional $1,500 came out of the school's budget. The project was brought to...
Grand Coulee filled its vacant city council seat last Tuesday night. The council voted in Mike Horne, owner of MPH Repair on Midway Avenue. Both Horne and Alan Cain had submitted “letters of interest” in filling the Position 4 council seat, vacated when Erin Nielson resigned after accepting a job in Boise, Idaho. Councilman Gary Carriere nominated Horne, calling attention to the fact that Horne had run for mayor and had indicated on numerous occasions his interest in serving on the council. Both Horne and Cain were present at the council mee...
A pickup crashed through a chain-link fence and caused several thousand dollars of damage to a business and residence in Electric City in the middle of the night last Thursday. A police report on the crash stated that the vehicle, a 2009 Toyota Tacoma pickup, was found embedded in the side of the residence at 8 Coulee Boulevard, after hitting the corner of the structure, smashing a dumpster and crashing through a steel fence. The structure houses a tanning parlor and a residence. The collision...
A light for security Jerry Sands and Paulette Webley requested that a street light be placed on a pole in the alley near the Grand Coulee Veterinary Clinic. Sands’ letter noted that several of his storage units had been broken into, and Webley had the same problem with her units. Sands said, it “may help keep the thieves away.” The Grand Council City Council approved the request, and Sands will pay for the power used. Golf cart request Dale Baty, owner of Center Lodge Motel, asked Grand Coulee Council if they would look at allowing golf carts t...
Elmer City was selected to receive a “chip seal” grant from the state Department of Transportation, city officials learned Monday. The Transportation Improvement Board grant is for $82,705, and funds will be available in 2018 for a project on Elmer City Access Road. “We were happy to receive the grant news,” public works director Jimmer Tillman stated. Tillman said there are some extreme cracks on the road, and the grant will enable the town to improve the road condition. Elmer City had asked for $151,000 for the chip seal grant, but was awa...

The city of Grand Coulee has signed an impound agreement with Moses Lake Towing. Mayor Paul Townsend said Tuesday that the city now has the ability to get rid of abandoned cars on city streets. The agreement allows Moses Lake Towing to pick up reported abandoned vehicles and charge the registered owners any fees connected to the impound. The notification for impound service will come from the city’s code enforcement officer or the police department, Townsend said. Under the agreement, Moses Lake Towing will be free to pursue collection of c...
Grand Coulee Volunteer Fire Chief Richard Paris advised the council last week that ambulance calls will likely hit 400 for the year. He said that as of Nov. 15 the department had answered 347 calls, about normal. Paris also reported that during the month of October the department had 34 calls, including five in Coulee Dam and 21 in Grand Coulee. He said the ambulance had eight calls to transport patients. The department had three fire calls: a trailer fire, a fuel spill and an active-shooter drill at Coulee Medical Center. Paris said the...

Most of the Town was built over 80 years ago and we can’t expect that the infrastructure will last forever… and that includes our sidewalks. So for now, let’s skip the myriad of other issues/problems and let’s look at our sidewalks. At first, the Town just presumed that each of us “homeowner’s” would be required to individually repair the (their) sidewalks – and that was (and still is) a requirement of state statutes (laws). However, as is usually the case, assumptions and perceptions are usually interpreted as a requirement for someone els...
I made the decision in 2012 to run for county commissioner to bring effective leadership to the county. I ran for reelection to continue that leadership of balancing budgets, adopting land use plans that were kicked down the road since 1965, and updating the county facilities plan. We did all of these things while maintaining a balanced budget and putting over $2 million dollars back into county roads. I am proud of my service and the work achieved by commissioners Campbell and DeTro. Okanogan County has many great employees dedicated to their...

Aren’t we all so grateful that this fiasco of an election year is over! For those young people who were experiencing their first presidential election, please don’t be turned off by all of it. The media has stated “never in our history have we ever seen anything such as this.” Hopefully it will never happen again! The one bright spot for our family was campaigning for Nick Wallace for Grant County Superior Court Judge. Putting up signs, marching (huffing and puffing) in parades, etc. Certainly we were disappointed that the results were not wha...
Wrestling is a dedication sport. It is not always about the wins and losses and skill level. It is about the dedication you put into yourself and the time you’re willing to put in to be the best. How much are you willing to sacrifice? This time of year is the time we see grapplers headed to Mr. Hood’s mat room, running circuits and eating the bare essentials. All so they can elevate themselves to the next level. The last five years have seen state wrestling champions in the halls of LR. Octavio Alejendre, Kodie Horn, Jacob Smith and Orrin Gross...
