A house fire Sunday at 228 B Continental Heights that did major damage to the interior is still under investigation, according to Grand Coulee Volunteer Fire Chief Richard Paris. The alarm sounded at 9:12 p.m. and fire units from Electric City, Grand Coulee, Coulee Dam and the Bureau of Reclamation responded. The house is owned by J & G NW Enterprises of Stanwood, Washington. Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Bruce Albert Brandstrom passed away Friday, September 25, 2015, at the age of 82 after a brief illness. Bruce was born June 2, 1933, in Mt. Vernon, Washington, to Helen Mae (Clair) Brandstrom and Bror Albert Brandstrom. He graduated from Mt. Vernon High School and served honorably in the Air Force during the Korean War. A town council meeting at Coulee Dam that was designed to discuss consolidation of services such as police, ambulance and fire departments with other cities and towns was essentially postponed until Oct. 7, because only three of five council members were present last Wednesday. The Bureau of Reclamation will install wooden log booms across Moonbeam Bay and the bay at Redford Canyon beginning in late October, the agency announced Tuesday. During construction, and upon completion of the project, motorized watercraft will be prohibited in each of these areas. Coulee Dam police Chief Pat Collins has retired. “I would like to thank you all for the many years I have been with Coulee Dam,” Collins stated in a brief letter of resignation. “It is now time for me to move on. I have been offered another position and, after careful consideration, I have decided to accept the new position.” Collins stated that his final day would be Sept. 25. Their actions had been picked up on the USBR Plant Protection security camera. - Police checked on a 911 hang-up call from the Variety Store. One local mayor has urged the Bureau of Reclamation to consider building something beyond just a new fire station, even a building for joint use with other fire departments in the area. The Bureau of Reclamation is seeking public input on a draft environmental assessment for its proposed plan to build a new fire station. The Bureau has identified two sites to build a 21,500-square-foot fire station. The preferred site, identified as Alternative A, is on land already managed by the Grand Coulee Power Office outside the west administration/industrial area gate, near the intersection with Highway 155 and B Street. Ten Years Ago Dave Marrs resiend his position as marshal of Elmer City on Monday. Marrs has had an on-again off-again relationship at Elmer City. After his hours were cut from 120 a month to 80 under this year's budget, there has been a lot of turmoil with the marshal positions. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has delegated authority to enforce federal laws on its lands within the exterior boundary of the Colville Reservation to certified Colville Tribal Police officers, the USBR announced last Wednesday. A fire on USBR land near the Delano Transfer Station just after 4 p.m. Thursday was brought quickly under control by Bureau of Reclamation and local firefighters. North Dam Park takes some $30,000 a year to maintain, and the community rallied to save it after the city of Grand Coulee decided it could no longer support it alone. A fast-moving fire Friday burned about an acre of brush and grass across the highway from North Dam, but quick action by local firefighters prevented flames from reaching nearby houses. Maybe it’s just because we so often have a front-row view of tragedy, but two items in this week’s brought home the extreme importance of highly- trained emergency responders and some relief that that training is happening. Serving as a volunteer firefighter or emergency medical technician is far from easy, and considerable training is needed to be kept up even before the actual job of responding to emergencies is tackled.
