Grand Coulee Police 9/7 - Officers checked on a report from Tribal Police that a stolen vehicle was at a location on Sunny Drive in Electric City. The man who had the vehicle was arrested on a Department of Corrections detainer. He told police that he had made a down payment on the vehicle and still owed $2,800. The woman who owned the car stated that the man didn’t have permission to take the vehicle. The man was taken to Grant County Jail on the DOC detainer. The Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $7 million contract Aug. 29 to Voith Hydro, Inc. in York, Pennsylvania, to perform turbine repair for Grand Coulee and Hungry Horse dams. The turbine runners to be serviced have been in operation since the early 1950s. The work requires specialized welding and grinding, and will be completed over the next five years. “These repairs at Grand Coulee and Hungry Horse dams are essential to maintaining the turbines at these hydropower facilities,” said Regional Director Lorri Lee in a press release. “This work... The Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $1.85 million contract Sept. 2 to ABB, Inc. in Cary, North Carolina, to replace transformer oil coolers at Grand Coulee Dam. Over the past several years the existing transformer oil coolers have shown the need for replacement, the bureau said in a press release. The contract will require furnishing and installing new transformer oil coolers, as well as disposal of the existing ones. Grand Coulee police Chief Mel Hunt and Sgt. John Tufts have about 70 years of combined service to the area. That's about to change, with Hunt ending 39 years of service to the Grand Coulee area beginning in 1975 as a reserve office and ending Oct. 1, 2014, as police chief for the past 35 years. Sgt. A Maryland man was fatally injured in a motorcycle accident Sunday three miles west of Grand Coulee on SR-174. Newton C. Pereira, 57, of Brookeville, Md., was dead at the scene, after striking a 2003 Chevrolet Venture van. Three of the occupants of the van had unknown injuries and were taken to Coulee Medical Center for observation and treatment. A civic minded man made a big contribution of labor Saturday, helping to clean up the top of North Dam after Fourth of July fireworks the night before. But no one knows who he is. The young man, say Bureau of Reclamation officials, was walking by the mess left by private individuals lighting off fireworks from the top of the earthen dam that holds back Banks Lake when he decided that just wasn't right. With Lake Roosevelt about 4 feet from being full, the Bureau of Reclamation expects the lake to rise starting July 3 by up to a half foot each day through the weekend. Filling the lake lifts accumulated debris off the shores and into the water where it can be dangerous to boaters. The Bureau of Reclamation is advising people camping along the Lake Roosevelt shoreline over the July 4 weekend to be aware of potential dangers that could exist due to rapidly rising lake levels. Electric City is considering creating its own police force and possibly a tax to fund it. Mayor Jerry Sands said Tuesday that it will be on the agenda when his council meets July 8. He stated that the city will consider a property tax levy issue, asking residents of Electric City to vote 35 cents per thousand dollars of assessed valuation to fund the department. Grand Coulee and Electric City officials will meet at 2 p.m. Monday, June 16, to discuss ways they can work together on a walking path that could extend across the causeway south of Electric City and through their two respective cities. The town council at Coulee Dam approved a budget amendment ordinance last Wednesday night that will provide the chamber of commerce $6,000 for a media campaign to promote the new Laser Light Show on Grand Coulee Dam. The chamber had asked for the added funds from the town’s hotel/motel tax monies at the town’s last meeting and it was tabled to be brought up again Wednesday. The operator of Grand Coulee’s Wastewater Treatment Plant addressed the city council last Tuesday night, seeking $400,000 to make needed repairs. Gary Abbott explained to the council the results of a report from the city’s engineering firm, Gray & Osborne, showing the need for major electrical repairs at the plant. The plant is owned by both Grand Coulee (51 percent) and Electric City (49 percent). An art volunteer at Center Elementary and the Grand Coulee Dam Middle School is teaching students art history and how to paint in the style of famous painters. The new laser light show came off with a 45-minute glitch Saturday night. A mechanical problem kept lookers aghast at the celebrated debut of the show. After the initial show Saturday night, the laser debut got an ovation, according to Bureau of Reclamation Public Affairs Officer Lynne Brougher. The show came off Sunday and Monday nights without any trouble. “I’ve received mixed reviews,” Brougher said. The Bureau of Reclamation will begin showing the new laser light show on the face of Grand Coulee Dam, “One River, Many Voices,” this Saturday beginning at 10 p.m. The new show incorporates the story of the area, beginning with how the land was formed, the original inhabitants of the area, why Grand Coulee Dam was developed and the numerous effects and benefits the dam has had on local communities and the nation. The Bureau is seeking public comment to identify issues to be addressed in an environmental assessment, due out this fall. Coulee Dam’s town council was slow to convince last week that the town should reach down in its hotel/motel money reserves and provide the chamber of commerce and the Coulee Area Park and Recreation District with more funds.
