Boaters on Lake Roosevelt should be cautious because of debris from failed log booms upstream, the Bureau of Reclamation warned Tuesday. High river velocities and low reservoir levels at Lake Roosevelt have resulted in a failed log boom at the mouth of Kettle River, approximately 105 miles upstream of Grand Coulee Dam. The pressure of the water flow and accumulated debris pushing against the log booms caused a break in two places. Reclamation is advising people boating on Kettle River and Lake Roosevelt to exercise caution because of debris flo...

Workers in protective gear on top of Grand Coulee Dam get inundated with dust as they sandblast a lowered drum gate Friday. The gates hold back Lake Roosevelt when it's close to full, and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation takes advantage of lower lake levels to get some maintenance done. The lake was at about 1,249 feet above sea level at this point, following a curve similar to last year but a little lower, earlier, and about at the average low point in early May. "Full pool" is 1,290 when these...
Anglers on the ice just off North Dam on Banks Lake try their luck through holes in what one said was about 4-inch-thick ice Tuesday, just back from open water. As his companions were carefully making their way out on the ice, testing it with a hatchet, he said he thought it might be their last day ice fishing for the season. The Grant County Sheriff's Office on Monday posted a warning on Facebook to stay off Banks Lake, where ice fishers have persisted daily for weeks. "Warning: the U.S....

An address found on a pool floatie gave police someone to talk to on Bowen Avenue. There, police spoke to a woman who said that her husband and she hadn’t donated items, but were in the process of cleaning out their home. Police observed items pac...

A house in Belvedere burned down Saturday in a relatively short time. "It went up quick," said Morgan Tillman, a volunteer firefighter with Okanogan County Fire District 2 at Elmer City. Tilman, who said she arrived on "the late crew" that stayed until it was over but was not there at the beginning, said she understood a person inside the house had been taken out, but she had no details. District 2 Chief Dave Finch said he couldn't even be sure of that, and the cause of the fire is still under...
The ice on Banks Lake could "could rapidly change without warning" as the Bureau of Reclamation began pumping water into the lake on Friday, Feb. 17. A similar warning applies for those fishing at Potholes Reservoir. The most popular spot for ice fishing in the local area may well be the area near North Dam where the feeder canal brings in water from deep in Lake Roosevelt. "Recreationalists on Banks Lake and Potholes Reservoir should be aware that operational activities can lead to a rapid chan...
We take a lot of risks in our everyday lives. Some are more worthy than others. From assuming we know how to navigate that ice during a thaw to getting behind the steering wheel, life is full of them, some warranted, some not. Last week, two such risks stood out. On Friday, the Bureau of Reclamation started pumping water from Lake Roosevelt up to Banks Lake, an annual beginning that primes the Columbia Basin Project’s food-raising abilities. It also warms Banks Lake’s water slightly when winter has been cold enough to freeze it. The risky busin...

To whom it may concern: It has come to our attention that the Bureau of Reclamation is currently constructing a new fire department facility at the Grand Coulee Power Office in Grand Coulee, Washington. Along with this, we are excited to make you aware of an opportunity the Bureau has to recognize and pay tribute to Toni Jean Godsil, the first Bureau-hired female firefighter, hired as part of a controversial 1989 pilot program, who tragically lost her life in the line of duty. Before she did, though, she proved that men and women can...
The Bureau of Reclamation said Monday that parts of its fire station construction project should be complete by the end of February, but the entire project will take over another year to complete. "Progress on previous structural, electrical, and mechanical installations at the Grand Coulee Dam Fire Station are ongoing and slated for completion by the end of February 2023," a bureau press release stated. "The next phase of construction involves initiating unfinished construction activities in th...
Workers for Wenatchee firm KRCI LLC work on logs in the parking lot near the boat launch at Steamboat Rock State Park Jan. 19, eventually to form a new log boom in a now restricted area just to the northeast. The log boom work is estimated to be completed, if materials arrive in time, in April, said Washington State Coulee Corridor Area Manager Denis Felton, who oversees Steamboat, Dry Falls and Potholes state parks. The whole project, which includes new fencing erected last year and bank...

Electric City will set aside some of the money collected from tourists to make improvements to Coulee Playland, which sits on city-managed land. The city learned last month that it would need to invest in the campground to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act with an estimated $1 million in upgrades over coming years. City Clerk/Treasurer Peggy Nevsimal told the city council at their Nov. 22 meeting that the city usually budgets to spend money, itself, from its hotel/motel tax fund, but rarely if ever actually uses that budget line...
Electric City will change from hiring Grand Coulee’s police department to enforce law in its city to contracting with a city slightly further away — Coulee Dam — after reviewing proposals from both departments for future police services. Details are still being smoothed out following a Monday city council meeting in Coulee Dam in which council members asked for clarifications, but their consensus was to accept the agreement in principle after clarifications were made. The deal will require Coulee Dam’s two-man department to double personn...

Nothing is easy, not even at a place called Playland. An estimated million dollars of upgrades are needed at Coulee Playland to bring it up to Americans with Disabilities Act standards, the Electric City Council learned last week. The popular campground that includes a tackle and camping gear shop, boat launch, and more has been in the process of being sold to new owners this year. That process has been slowed as the Bureau of Reclamation reviews the new agreement between the city and the potential new owners to make sure it doesn’t contradict...
