    School enrollment up again Enrollment number for Grand Coulee Dam District schools continues to exceed predictions. January’s enrollment in all three schools was recorded at 667. That’s 27 over what the district budgeted for and 46 students over the same period a year ago. So far this year, enrollment is 205 students over the same period last year.   • Chamber to make annual awards next week

    The Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual awards night will be Thursday, Feb. 13, at Pepper Jack’s Bar and Grille, officials said this week. Chamber Executive Director Peggy Nevsimal said Tuesday that the “Achiever of the Year” and “Business of the Year” will be announced during the evening. The dinner event begins at 6 p.m. Last year’s “Achiever of the Year” was George Kohout, who led the Ridge Riders to one of their most successful seasons with record turnouts for their events.     Three residents of Grand Coulee responded to the city’s request to fill a vacant city council seat. The Position 2 seat became vacant after Tim Alling decided not to run again and has been vacant since the first of the year.     Ten Years Ago Riding the ski slopes and keeping good grades have been combined in a program for students from Nespelem and Grand Coulee Dam School Districts. The club of 89 kids have academic requirements intended to keep their English skills, overall grades and attendance up. In return they get a day on the Loop Loop Slopes every Saturday for five weeks. A local man wants the stray cat problem in his neighborhood solved.     Antoine Alan "Tony" Atkins 69, passed away during the morning hours of Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, surrounded by his family in Spokane's Deaconess Hospital. Tony began this life's journey on December 6, 1944, to the Seattle, Wash., home of Joseph and Lorraine (Sam) Atkins. Tony served his country with honor as a United States Marine during the Vietnam war.     John B. Klobucher was born May 24, 1920, in Spokane and passed away January 24, 2014, at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane. Other than his service in the Army during WWII, he lived his whole life in the Grand Coulee area. He was a master carpenter and had an ingenious way of building and/or fixing anything. Those skills were used working on almost every dam on the Columbia River. He retired from Grand Coulee Dam in 1985.     Grand Coulee High School Alumni Association will hold the first of three regularly scheduled meetings for 2014 on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 1 p.m., at United Methodist Church, 405 Center Street, Grand Coulee. The purpose of the organization is to recognize outstanding graduates of Lake Roosevelt High School by the awarding of two $500 scholarships each year.     The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife now has an enforcement officer living in the area and is patrolling Geezer Beach. He is politely explaining and clearing up confusion regarding licensing needs. (WA license is all that is needed!). So go fish on our beach and don't worry. I would also like to clear up some rumors.     The Bureau of Reclamation announced last week that Kerry McCalman of Denver, Colo., has been named the interim power manager at Grand Coulee Dam, starting last Wednesday. McCalman is Reclamation’s senior advisor for Hydropower and Electric Reliability compliance officer based in Denver. He replaces Mark Jenson who has been the Grand Coulee power manager since April 2011.     A worker burned in an accident at Grand Coulee Dam last November is due to be released from hospital today, the Bureau of Reclamation has informed an irrigation district. The Columbia Basin Development League reported to members in its email newsletter last week that the bureau said Dan McCulloch would be released Jan. 22.     Authorities clamped down on a local fire chief this week, who said he didn’t know burning the kinds of materials he had in his burn pile was illegal. He’s not alone in a lack of understanding of this state’s laws regarding outdoor burning.
