A dozen barbecue teams will compete in the Harvest Festival this weekend at North Dam Park. It is estimated that the two-member teams will spend about $500 to compete in an effort to walk away with the grand prize of $1,000. Only two teams are local; the rest come from all over the Pacific Northwest. The event with multiple areas of interest begins this Friday and concludes on Sunday. In August of this year my wife and I had the pleasure of spending three nights and four days in your fantastic locality, Grand Coulee. After doing all the touristy things (dam) we mingled with the local population. I can honestly state that we found your city and the inhabitants to be some of the most welcoming and friendly people ever. 1 Years Ago Over 1900 acres outside of Elmer City has burned and hundreds of firefighters from the area and surrounding communities have combined in the effort to stop it. Many citizens had to be evacuated but no homes were lost. The official cause of the fire is “human caused.” Coulee Dam officials opened up the town’s new filtration plant to a tour, after a brief ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday morning. 1 Years Ago The tenure of the Grand Coulee Dam School District's Superintendent, Dennis Chambers, came to an abrupt end Wednesday when he received notice to clear out his office. With two years remaining on his contract the $82,500 a year left on his contract was bought out. Grand Coulee Dam Area firefighters have been busy this last week with more than 5,000 acres burned within a thirty mile radius. Grand Coulee Police 6/30 - While cleaning out a vehicle at Jack’s Four Corners, a worker found what he thought was a controlled substance and called the police. Since the vehicle had been involved in a weapons offense, the material was held for a Grant County Sheriff officer. - A man and a woman were arrested after an incident on Kelso Avenue in Electric City. In the rocky hills above Lake Roosevelt last Thursday, some 25 chamber of commerce members got to experience the dream farm of members Merv and Mary Jo Monteith. At their Spring Canyon Alpacas and D&M Gardens, they were introduced to the couple's Alpaca herd, about 30 in number, and got a special introduction to a 3-week-old newcomer to the farm. The town council at Coulee Dam approved a budget amendment ordinance last Wednesday night that will provide the chamber of commerce $6,000 for a media campaign to promote the new Laser Light Show on Grand Coulee Dam. The chamber had asked for the added funds from the town’s hotel/motel tax monies at the town’s last meeting and it was tabled to be brought up again Wednesday.
