Get ready for the community’s first Harvest Festival, Sept. 14, 15. It will be a family affair with games for both the kids and adults. A similar, but less ambitious, event happened last October. Ten Years Ago A fire once again hit the Colville Indian Reservation last week as flames charred more than 2,000 acres and threatened several homes. One of the unique attributes of the Coulee is that when you return to this area after a long departure, it appears that nothing has changed. It is the same as when you left. I have heard this hundreds of times from people who have left this area after high school and returned as adults. I think that is kind of a cool way too look at our area. Ten Years Ago Sleeping in the Grand Coulee Dam Visitor Arrival Center parking lot paid off for an Oregon couple last Friday when they were reunited with their pet beagle. Tammy Coyne of Canby, Ore., said her and her husband, Phil’s eight-month-old beagle Daisy escaped from their recreational vehicle during the show. She said Daisy was scared by the fireworks and ran from the RV when their 8-year-old granddaughter Sybrina Coyne opened the door at about 10:35 p.m. to watch the fireworks on a blanket. Ten Years Ago Armed with only garden hoses, several Coulee Dam residents helped prevent a fire from destroying two Coulee Dam homes last Friday. Coulee Dam Mayor Quincy Snow said strong winds knocked a poplar tree over on Yucca Street. A chamber of commerce-sponsored meeting of community leaders Monday selected a committee whose goal is to approach the three municipalities that collect hotel/motel tax money about the possible formation of a tourism advisory board to oversee spending it.
