Sensing a sticky wicket, Electric City Mayor Jerry Sands took the issue of joining the chamber of commerce off the city council’s agenda last Tuesday night and it will appear on the agenda again,March 12. The $100 joining fee got an immediate response from Councilmember Bob Rupe, who stated that the city had given the chamber a lot of money and they could take the membership fee out of that. Ten Years Ago The roar of boat motors will fill the air of Banks Lake this summer as competitive boat racing returns to the Gand Coulee Dam area. The Northwest Water Competition is organizing the second annual “Racer Reunion Regatta” on June 14 and 15 at Sunbanks Resort said member Roy Mackey. Ten Years Ago The bald eagle became the focus of hundreds of tourists last weekend as they flocked to the Grand Coulee Dam area to look at the national bird during the “Balde” Eagle Festival. “We doubled what we had last year,” said Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce Pres. Tim Alling. The festival was “very much a success in that manner.” Several indicators of tourism show that people returned to the area last year after a very bad 2001 tourism season, but they are spending less than in 2000. The local housing market is surviving a bumpy ride and is showing signs of improvement, real estate broker Merle Kennedy told chamber of commerce members at a Thursday luncheon last week. Kennedy said that the housing market last year looked bleak but with a number of sales late in the year, 2012 nearly matched the value of homes sold the year before. Membership up Chamber of commerce Manager Peggy Nevsimal reported at the group’s weekly luncheon meeting last Thursday that 11 new members had joined the chamber so far this year. Electric City shot the rest of its hotel/motel budget for 2013, at its meeting last Tuesday night. The city council Dec. 11, held to its policy of budgeting just half of what it took in during 2012, and putting the other half into its hotel/motel reserve fund.
