David James Bastian, 74, resided for the past 19 years in Electric City, Washington. David passed away peacefully at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Washington, due to causes incident to cancer on Saturday, July 8, 2017. David was born on September 10, 1942, in Spokane, Wash., to Weldon Wilford Bastian and Melba Ardyce Parker. Reading the recent piece about the circus visit, I found a statement to be two-thirds correct. “Jungle cats” is a misleading title for the three big cats that are part of the circus. Lions, specifically African lions, are not jungle dwellers, unlike the tigers. Now, there is an exception. The Asiatic lion, a sub-species of lion, is found primarily in India. Brooklyn Rose Reichlin of Electric City is the 2017 recipient of a $1,000 scholarship awarded by the Grand Coulee Dam Lions Club. The circus is coming to town, and no, not your in-laws. An actual circus! The Culpepper & Merriweather Circus, to be exact. The Lake Roosevelt Lady Raiders girls' softball team defeated the Waterville Lady Shockers last week to finish their regular season, then lost to the Liberty Bell Lady Mountain Lions 13-2 on May 9 in the first round of districts. The Lady Raiders overwhelmed the Waterville Shockers last week to finish their season at 15-2 in the league, 15-4 overall. This past week the Lake Roosevelt Raider tennis team lost at home against the Liberty Bell Mountain Lions, then travelled to Okanogan where they lost to the Bulldogs. Against Liberty Bell, the boys lost 4-1, as did the girls. Terry Yazzie and Bradley Wilder had the win for the day competing in boys' doubles, winning the first match 7-5, losing the second 1-6, then winning the tiebreaker 14-12. Two community Easter egg hunts are planned for the area this year. The Lions Club will hold its 80th community Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 15, at the former middle school field in Grand Coulee. It is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and is for kids up to 10 years of age. And the town of Elmer City will hold its Easter egg hunt at the park near Town Hall on Sunday, April 16. Monday was a busy day at the Grand Coulee Dam Senior Center. That was the day that Easter baskets went on sale. The place was filled with 371 Easter baskets, and accordingly, people. Workers started putting the baskets together last Friday, and finally finished Sunday afternoon. The baskets are colorful, wrapped in various colors of see-through material, with soft animals, candy, coloring books and a wide variety of items that capture the attention of children. The Lake Roosevelt Raiders baseball team defeated the Oroville Hornets in both games of a doubleheader March 28, 20-0 and 20-2. The Lake Roosevelt Raiders baseball team had to forfeit their doubleheader against Bridgeport on Saturday due to only having eight players. “We had a family issue and weren’t able to field a full team,” said Levi Seekins, athletic director for LR. The Liberty Bell Mountain Lions held an impromptu slumber party in the Lake Roosevelt gym last Tuesday after their basketball game with the Raiders, due to the ice storm that night. The junior varsity games had been canceled so that the varsity games could be held earlier and Liberty Bell could get back home before the weather became too frightful. Elten Henry Klein passed away peacefully December 8, 2016, at the Columbia Basin Skilled Nursing Unit in Ephrata, Washington. He was born in Spokane, Washington, October 8, 1924, to Anne Thomas Klein and Henry Klein of Almira, Washington, and lived his entire life in Almira until 2011 after breaking his hip, and requiring assistance with daily living.
