The Raiders played two doubleheaders last week, winning three of the four games. In a doubleheader at home against the Oroville Hornets April 21, the Raiders won both games by large margins. Raider baseball started last week with a 13-3 win over the Manson Trojans in Coulee Dam. It wasn't a forgone conclusion. Manson held the Raiders scoreless for two innings from their 4-1 deficit in the third inning, whittling the Lake Roosevelt lead to 4-3 by the fifth. The Lady Raider softball team defeated Manson last week by 10 runs, then suffered that fate twice against Okanogan on Saturday. At Grand Coulee, Lake Roosevelt defeated the Manson Trojans by 33-23 in a long game Thursday. Sean Garvin pitched one inning when she threw 72 pitches for three strikeouts and nine walks. Kourtney Harrington took the mound for two innings and threw 85 pitches for six strikeouts and four walks. Cassi Palmer also pitched, hurling 83 pitches for five strikeouts and eight walks. 1 Years ago Total Health Events, LLC, of Blaine, Wash, the same company that put on last fall’s triathlon, is hosting the “Over The Dam Run” 5K/10K and a half marathon on Sunday, May 8 on Colorama weekend. The original race began in 1977, organized annually by an avid group of runners from the Coulee, Spokane and eastern Washington, but numbers of participants in recent years has dwindled. Race Director Jonathon Hoskins says a major attraction for many runners will be the chance to run on the top of Grand Coulee Dam, which had been closed off... Full story

Beer tent OK’d for July 4 The Coulee Dam Town Council gave the chamber of commerce permission to erect a “beer tent” on its maintenance complex parking lot for the July 4 Festival of America. Chamber manager Peggy Nevsimal provided the council with information about the beer tent hours and how it would be managed. Raider Tennis competed in three matches last week with a great deal of success. “They are all very competitive and regularly push each other at practices to improve,” Head Coach Steve Archer said. “I am hopeful that each week we will continue to see their improvement.” In their matches last week, the Raider boys defeated Wilbur-Creston on March 23 by 4-1, then beat Davenport 4-1 on Friday. The members of the Grand Coulee Dam Senior Center honored their "Volunteer of the Year" Tuesday night. Felix Marcolin, 78, was described as a "person who makes himself available 24/7'" to help other people. Seniors President Birdie Hensley stated that Marcolin does everything at the senior center, and more, and he was an easy selection. Anyone who knows anything at all about our history in the Coulee area knows that volunteerism is what made the heart start beating and thriving in this area. Sure, the great Grand Coulee Dam brought thousands into the area but if not for the local volunteer the towns would never have grown. Lady Raider Basketball is at a crossroads after losing two of the last three games. Against Okanogan Jan. 13 at Okanogan, the Lady Raiders struggled against a sluggish Bulldog team. Okanogan jumped out to a big 22-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second the Bulldogs scored only 10 points, but LR failed to score a basket during the quarter. Raider Wrestling hosted the annual Powerhouse Tourney Dec. 30, then headed south to Warden Jan. 3 for the Jeremiah Schmunk Invitational. At their Powerhouse Tournament, held in the old middle school in Grand Coulee, LR placed 10th out of 11 teams with 41.5 team points. Sixty years ago, the holiday season in the community stretching from Electric City to Nespelem featured all kinds of parties, programs and events.
