Apparently, the mayor of Grand Coulee does not want his police department serving Electric City. That seems the most reasonable way to interpret his proposed tripling of the cost Grand Coulee charges Electric City for answering calls to Electric City. Why this might be is a matter for speculation. On a more hopeful note, the same two cities will explore the possibility of effectively completing a nearly community-wide walking trail. Crossing the causeway and joining Electric City and Grand Coulee with a pedestrian pathway would enhance local li... Full story

In response to three letters published last week so fervently against the “Wild horse race” coming up this weekend, there needs to be some things cleared up. The term “Wild horse race” has misled the three concerned ladies that voiced their strong objection and outrage against this “most inhumane thing.” First of all, these are not “wild horses” as you would see on some National Geographic documentary. Usually these are horses that have demonstrated that they don’t have the temperament to be saddle horses. Most horses that have shown this t... Full story
After a win over Bridgeport last week, the Lady Raiders came up one game short of making it into district play, ending their season. The Lake Roosevelt team played their last softball game of the 2014 season against Liberty Bell May 17. "We just needed to win two of three this week to make it into districts as the third seed, but LR came up short and we didn't get job done to make districts," Head Coach Jamie Lezard said. The Lady Raiders finished the season with a win-loss record of 5-15... Full story
Biographies of five local women will be featured along with a "Rosie the Riveter" quilt at the Visitor Center soon. The five are: Ida Bartels, Toby Ann Levy, Lynda G. Nutt, Barbara Ann Meyer and Roberta "Birdie" Hensley. The five have all made a number of contributions to community life here. Ida married Sid Bartels in 1940, and the two purchased the Deppman Mill at Belvedere just a few days later, only to see it go up in smoke from a fire that someone had set. She served many years on the Grand... Full story
This is about the wild horse race. People may think this is fun and exciting, but it's at the expense of the state of fear and stress on an animal that has not been around humans. It is cruel. Those of us who know horses, do our best to take the fear out of horses, and this has to be traumatic on them. They probably feel like the Christians that were turned into the arena with the lions. Patricia Hayes This is a terrible idea! To terrorize wild horses like this for entertainment is nothing short of cruelty and inhumane. Rodeos will be rodeos... Full story
Lake Roosevelt’s baseball team finished the 2014 season Monday at Wenatchee Valley Juinor College in a loser-out game against White Swan. The Raiders kept it close but could not beat the Cougars in the end. The Cougars ended the Raiders season in 2013 in the same early morning loser out game. Earlier in the week, the Raiders lost to the league’s number-one Liberty Bell Mt. Lions in a slugfest. The Raiders could not stop the Mt. Lion offense that scored 17 runs. The loss placed LR in the second-place spot from the Central Washignton 2B Nor... Full story
Lady Raider softball dropped all three of their games last week. At Oroville May 6, the Lady Raiders lost to the Hornets by a close score. On the mound, Tristen Adolph continued her streak of solid performances, striking out eight batters and giving up only four walks. Some 68 percent of Adolph’s 124 pitches were strikes. Adolph along with Savannah Marin had a good day at the plate, going three for four. But Lake Roosevelt left six runners stranded on the base paths and made too many errors that allowed the Hornets to score. In a May 9 d... Full story
LR’s tennis team rebounded from a total loss early last week with a sweep and a half at the start of May. At Okanogan April 29, the Raiders were swept, both boys and girls, by the Bulldogs. Holly Jo Carriere came back in the second set of her match against Luisa Cardenas to make it close, 6-0, 7-5. Brandin Smith’s loss to Blake Chesledon 6-2, 6-4, was as close to a win as the boys came. But the Raiders rebounded with a sweep of Wilson Creek Devils May 1 in Coulee Dam. All matches contested were Raider victories. Head Coach Steve Archer was loo... Full story
The Raiders extended their win streak to five games last week with wins at home and away. Lake Roosevelt took on the Hornets at Greene Field April 29, but Oroville did not roll over easily. LR travelled to Bridgeport May 3 for a doubleheader against the Mustangs, who were on a three-game win streak and looking to upset the Raiders’ winning ways. But LR did not allow the Mustangs to make it a game. The R... Full story

Lady Raider softball went one of three in last week's games, falling to the league-leading Liberty Bell, but prevailing in one of two games in Saturday's doubleheader against Oroville. At Liberty Bell April 22, Lake Roosevelt left six runners stranded and made too many mental errors on defense, allowing the Mt. Lions to score. The Lady Raiders hosted the Oroville Hornets in a doubleheader Saturday at Grand Coulee, where a better focused LR team defeated the Hornets in the first game. As a team,... Full story
Three home tennis matches against White Swan came down to tiebreaks, with LR winning all three April 22. The weather became a factor as the matches, played on both the high school courts and the Coulee Dam Community Courts in Cole Park, had to be delayed for two hours due to rain. The delay meant that the final match was not completed until 8 p.m. Daniel Campobasso’s singles match against Tre Deleon finished with a 10-8 tiebreak. Tyler Agosto and Edmond Fenton won their doubles match in a 1... Full story
The league-leading Mountain Lions held the Raiders to one run April 22 at Liberty Bell, defeating Lake Roosevelt 6-1, but LR did not stay down, as the Billygoats were to discover. The Pateros Billygoats travelled to Greene Field Saturday for a doubleheader that was pushed ahead from 11 a.m. to 9:30 for the first game. The earlier start did not faze the new Raider defense, as both pitching and fielding shut out the Billygoats in the first game, which LR needed just two runs to win. In the second... Full story

One of my most trusted readers and a small friend of mine, (even though she tells me to Shut Up every time she sees me) wanted me to do my column about the Easter Bunny. So since I don’t want to make one of my most valued readers angry, I will write a column about the furry little guy that hopefully delivered you a basket full of goodies last Sunday. If you got a look at the middle school field last week, you might have got a peek at the thousands of eggs the Easter Bunny and the Lions Club s... Full story

The 11 a.m. event, which the Lions have been putting on since 1936, was preceded a half hour... Full story
Raider baseball rebounded from their loss to Liberty Bell by winning all three games last week. At home against Bridgeport April 15, the Raiders blanked the Mustangs en route to a big league win. Lions, the only league team... Full story
Lady Raider softball picked up their first two wins of the 2014 season at Manson on Saturday. Lady Raider pitching showed positive improvement. In the first game of the doubleheader, Savannah Marin struck out 10 batters, allowing only seven walks. In the second game, Kourtney Harrington stuck out three Trojans and walked only four. In fact, the second game was called after the third inning because the Lady Raiders mercy ruled the Trojans. The improved pitching received backup at the plate led by the Lady Raiders’ Tristen Adolph, who batted 1... Full story

Areielle White had to step up to the number-one girls' singles spot as Holly... Full story
