Rotarians have connected with the Safe Kids program at both Crescent Bay and Spring Canyon boat launches in an effort to save lives in area waters. The program is sponsored by Grant County Health District, the Grand Coulee Dam Rotary Club and the National Park Service. The program provides life jackets at the two boat launches for people who plan water activity but don't have enough life jackets. EPHRATA — A country band with a sound as big as Little Texas will headline the 11th annual Basin Summer Sounds music festival. This year’s event is Friday and Saturday, July 18-19. The flags are going up Saturday, Veterans, their families, and the general public looks forward each year to the "Isle of Flags" at Spring Canyon Cemetery. This year there will be over 500 flags flying for veterans from the local areas. They go up in a gigantic volunteer work effort beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday. You can go and help. Biographies of five local women will be featured along with a "Rosie the Riveter" quilt at the Visitor Center soon. The five are: Ida Bartels, Toby Ann Levy, Lynda G. Nutt, Barbara Ann Meyer and Roberta "Birdie" Hensley. The five have all made a number of contributions to community life here. Ida married Sid Bartels in 1940, and the two purchased the Deppman Mill at Belvedere just a few days later, only to see it go up in smoke from a fire that someone had set. Repair bill guess: $61 million Grant County Public Utility District announced Tuesday that the estimate to repair Wanapum Dam is about $61 million, but commissioners hope to avoid raising rates any more than already scheduled. The dam was discovered in February to have a crack in its spillway some 65 feet long and 2 inches wide. The crack closed up when the utility lowered the reservoir behind the dam to take the pressure off. The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission announced Tuesday the upcoming dedication of a new ADA-accessible fishing pier at Steamboat Rock State Park. In America we have several national holidays or occasions which we recognize annually. Of these, only a relative few are always identified with the same calendar date each year, such as: New Year’s Day – January 1st, Independence Day – July 4th, Veteran’s Day – November 11th, and of course Christmas – December 25th. Grand Coulee is gaining a reputation among University of Washington students interested in rural medicine. Coulee Medical Center is among the smallest of a handful of facilities used by the university in its five-state area for a set of programs designed to introduce medical students to rural medicine. The chamber of commerce named two of its own to awards last Thursday night as the "Achiever of the Year," and "Business of the Year." The awards are made by the vote of members of the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce. The Candy Point Trail is in trouble, and Carol Netzel has asked the Coulee Dam Town Council for help. Access to the Candy Point Trail is through Netzel’s front yard and when you arrive at the top you are afforded a bird’s eye view of Grand Coulee Dam and the town of Coulee Dam. In a letter to the council last Wednesday, Netzel appealed to town officials to come up with a plan to fix the deteriorating trail. “Although this is not on city land, it has always been considered one of our local attractions,” Netzel wrote to the council. Those are the dates for the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce’s community yard sale at North Dam Park. It’s part of the chamber’s fall Harvest Festival, with activities planned for the entire family, and even your pets. Hundreds of athletes from throughout the United States and Canada are putting their finishing touches on training for the 10th annual Grand Columbian Super Tri triathlon scheduled here Saturday, Sept. 21. The chamber of commerce has added one new twist and dropped one idea for its Sept.14, Harvest Festival at North Dam Park. The added twist is the Rotary Club will have a public BBQ for the celebration, featuring burgers and hotdogs. Dropped was a plan to have a nationally certified BBQ cook off. Ten Years Ago A fire once again hit the Colville Indian Reservation last week as flames charred more than 2,000 acres and threatened several homes. Ten Years Ago A master plan is now in the works for Coulee Dam’s Mason City Park and all of the town’s residents can help decide what the plan will contain. A proposed master plan with a rough outline of future changes to the east Coulee Dam park was approved by the town council last Wednesday.
