    Lake Roosevelt High School’s class of 2013 went through commencement exercises Saturday afternoon with speeches, songs, awards and scholarship announcements. School board director Ted Piccalo handed 36 diplomas to the smallest graduating class in the school’s history, which nevertheless contributed more than 3,200 hours of volunteer work to the community and amassed some $206,940 in scholarship offers.     Science teacher Ralph Rise was presented with a statewide award last week, an example for educators across the state. Sonia Siegel Vexler, co-director of LASER, the Pacific Science Center’s Leadership Assistance for Science Education Reform, presented Rise Wednesday with a check for $5,000 and a trophy in the form of a Galileo thermometer with a special inscription.   • Tribes plans annual Earth Day event

    The Colville Tribes will hold their fourth annual Earth Day celebration, Monday, April 22, at the powwow grounds near Nespelem. Joaquine Bustamante, of the tribal recycling program, told the local Rotary Club he’s hoping for some 1,600 participants this year. They had 1,200 last year. Activity will begin at 10 a.m. and run until 1:30 p.m., officials stated. Organizers stated that there will be over 60 informational booths, as well as drumming and dancing.     Jim Keene, retired school administrator, was named to the Grant County Port District 7 board of commissioners last Thursday. Keene replaces Jerry Birdwell who resigned last month. Keene will take over his duties when the board meets the last Thursday of April. Keene has been superintendent of schools in the Grand Coulee Dam School District, in Clarkston and in Pendleton before his retirement brought him and his wife back to Delano.     Through proceeds from the North Central Washington Sports Awards, Wenatchee North Rotary provides at least one monetary grant to a school or community youth athletic program outside of Wenatchee-East Wenatchee.     The school board gave the Rotary Club a list of possible projects that it could take on to enhance the new K-12 school. The Rotary Club advised school officials that it had $15,000 and would like to see how far it could leverage the money toward something at the new school. The Rotary Club plans to apply for a Rotary District grant to double its monies and continue leverage with other possible grants.     Rotarian and Electric City resident Rob Hughes will travel to Guatemala with a group of Rotary volunteers from across North America to bring educational opportunities to impoverished children. The Guatemala Literacy Project (GLP) group will deliver first-ever textbooks and inaugurate brand-new computer centers in rural schools. In 14 years of existence, the GLP has established 184 textbook programs, 52 computer centers, 27 primary schools with the Culture of Reading program and 578 one-year scholarships.     Edward W. Purdy Edward W. Purdy 86, passed away Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, in Spokane, Wash. He was born in Clark Fork, Idaho, February 25, 1926. He was a graduate of Harrison High School, then served in U.S. Navy during WWII. After the war he attended the University of Idaho and graduated in 1952 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He married Helen Ottosen on September 4, 1949, and they were married 63 years. He worked at Boeing for a number of years then later as an electrical engineer at Grand Coulee Dam.     The Rotary Club is seeking a project from the school district so it can go after a grant to double its fund for the new K-12 school. Rotarians Jim Keene, Roy Hamilton and Bob Valen appeared before the school board Monday night and told directors that the club had an opportunity to get a grant equaling its $15,000 school building fund but needed a project in order to do so.     With North Dam Park hosting fire crews this week, the Rotary Club has moved their Spaghetti Feed fundraiser to the Church of the Nazarene.     The Rotary Club is holding its annual spaghetti feed this Friday night at North Dam Park picnic area to raise what members hope will be enough money to complete the club’s handicapped-accessible fishing pier at Steamboat Rock State Park.     City sets criteria for cheaper rides The city of Grand Coulee, by resolution, passed an ambulance fee assistance policy at its meeting Aug. 21. If a person uses ambulance service and meets certain criteria, they can get a reduced rate, or the rate might be waived, according to the new policy. The criteria includes family income being below the poverty line, and if the hospital you are taken to is waiving its fee.     There will be a household hazardous waste collection at the Delano Regional Transfer Station from noon to 4 p.m., Friday, Sept. 7. Officials state that you can bring oil-based paints, stains, thinners, batteries, solvents, antifreeze, brake fluid, cleaning products, spot removers, insecticides, weed killers, fluorescent tubes, swimming pool and hobby chemicals.     Ten Years Ago One of the final obstacles to the construction of the town of Coulee Dam’s filtration plant has now been removed.
